Ya know, this subject isn't about being shallow. It's about not wanting to be with a person who doesn't give a rats asss. A few pounds is one thing but FAT is another. However, do not despair, anyone CAN get in better shape, just love yourself enough to do it.

Some people have propensity to be obese. Many obese people regain their weight after having taken it off, and it has nothing to do with returning to self-abhorrance or self-hatred.

The Genome Project has helped isolated the genes responsible for some people having a propensity to obesity. This means that, under the same circumstances, a person with propensity to obesity will have to fight twice as hard to attain and then maintain a normal weight, as a person without the gene for obesity. This doesn't include obesity caused by physical illnesses which lead to obesity, such as diabetes, thyroid problems, and the like.

In addition to this, western lifestyle is conducive to not walking. Its towns and cities have developed randomly and there's an almost absolute reliance on automobiles. Obesity is not so much a matter of hating oneself, as it is a matter of genetics. There are people who abhor themselves but are quite slim. The outdated idea that obesity demonstrated laziness, slothness, messiness and self-abhorrance is simply that, outdated.

There is plenty of information out there on the obesity gene map:
"Welcome to the expanded electronic version of the Human Obesity Gene Map. The project to review annually all markers, genes and mutations associated or linked with obesity phenotypes... "

While it is true that people are wired differently some are skinny no matter their caloric intake while others must watch every morsel, genetics do not make one OBESE. That's why there are no obese folks in 3rd world countries...NO FOOD!

There is only ONE reason people are overweight. Regardless of "glands" or whatever

They consume more calories than they burn

Period.

^^^^^^ Voices of reason!

Funny how the 'gland problem' allows them to drop 100 plus pounds after having gastric by-pass sx that insurance pays for, in turn escalating all of our premiums.

You're correct. Anyone can be starved. However, metabolism and automatic hunger vary drastically depending upon whether a person has obese genes or not. A person who does not have obese genes not only has a higher metabolism, but is also able to do well without having to be eating. It's not because the person is more "controlled", "better", "loves himself more", or is a harder worker, but because he/she is lucky.

If everyone were outfitted with obese genes, there would be no one saying that all that obese people have to do is stop stuffing their mouth, because then everyone would be battling the same genetic tendencies, and wouldn't find this flip dismissal of "just don't eat" very amusing.

I'm a former teacher and it reminds me of when society was not aware that some children suffered from dyslexia, and that this affected their learning. Back in the day it was felt that the children were lazy, irresponsible, refused to study, and preferred immediate gratification. Nowadays we know that dyslexia is a very real condition. Now the only ones saying those things about dyslexic kids are the completely ignorant.

Yes, yes, I did date a fat guy once. We went to sit on a bench in the park
together. He leaned over to kiss me, and there.....the bench almost turned
over. Then, I suggested we could walk together instead. It had rained and
there were too many mud everywhere. He could not walk too far either, he
started to sink in! Then, I helped him and pulled him up, but, he was too
heavy and I went down with him! To make a story short, We both came back
decided to never date a fat guy again. He himself neither.

Being lean and fit has NOTHING to do with luck!! It has everything to do with spending time in the gym and not putting everything you see into your mouth! The attitude that fitness is due to luck drives me crazy!!

I can see it now,the petite figure of a 105 lbs Princess melting into the flab of an 850 lbs wonder, moving on to a bone crushing evening of sexual thunder, after witch would leave even the paramedics scratching their heads...

Think about it Chester,if your whole life has been all about obtaining your perfectly Rotund Fisique, don't you think it might be kinder to the ladies,to at least let them ride from the top side.?.

I don't think I would... Not if he's obese...

perhaps meet and train him to take it off if he's a few pounds overweight... wouldn't mind helping him out....

I just read this thread and haven't replied to it in a while that I can remember. But I saw this section and I had to respond. the response on a person gains only because they consume more calories than they burn is a crock of BS. I eat once a day and thats all. I have since cut that in half in order to lose weight. I have went down from 353 to 220 pounds as of this past friday. But my point to this is that no matter what I ate it turned to fat and if I eat more than I have set myself at in a single day it turns to fat. I have figured the calories I take in in a single day and it is 600 so I don't think that the calorie thing is valid. I walk for 10 to 15 hours a day working. that includes bending and stooping, lifting and stretching, all the things that go with exercise. I have done this for over nine years but I never lost weight until I dropped to almost nothing to eat. So to make this short I have had a stroke and I also have diabeties both of which are a factor in why I had to lose. But in doing the cutting back it also applies a danger to the heart and to the body in other ways so where is the drawback in the quest to lose weight. Do we give up one thing and have a danger of one thing or go for just eating and have a danger of dieing due to the other a no win situation the way I have seen it. Nough said on this I know that calories is not an issue to everyone period.

the euorpeans are eating JAM/jelly on bread for breakfast... try a toast of that instead of a Huge Pancake or muffin... Just a note..

"fat" is a relative term.
I'm a bigger girl, but not huge and I can honestly say I wouldn't date a fat guy.

Husky, teddy bear, bulky - sure. But pre-subway Jared fat? No.

Why? I don't want to be held back. I want to look at my partner feel a drive to better myself. I've dated bigger guys who were just lazy, and I'm not interested in that - I want to be active and do things. Not saying that all "fat" guys are lazy.

So, what it comes down to I guess is where on the "fat" scale they are. I'm sure there are lots of people that won't date me because of my weight, and honestly I don't blame them. If it's not who you want to be with, its not who you want to be with.

You know, I may sound completely cliche here, but I honestly don't look for a guy just for his looks, to me it's more important how he acts, and how he treats people. But then we can flip the coin around, would you guys ever date an overweight woman? Cause I am not a skinny little supermodel, and I find that more men would rather date the skinny blonde than me.... double standard??

Thanks, Moundpuppy. That's exactly what scientists with the Genome Project has been discovering. Everyone has a different genetic makeup. The formula for losing weight used by people with a genetically high metabolism, will not work properly, or the same way for those with a different genetic makeup with a propensity for obesity.

Sari I haven't read any of the info you speak of I only know that if I take and eat more than 600 calories a day I will gain weight. I have to watch so close that I refuse to go out to eat. I break my own rules once in a while and not care. But I have to fight extra hard to remove what i gain from doing so. Now with Diabeties eating a carb will throw a sugar attack on my system that is not advisable by my doctors. certain foods react to blood as well and some reflect on asthma just as easily. so with a lot of things working against people what is there to do when it seems that so many always know that it is just to much eating that makes a person gain weight. Funny thing is, no study was done on the diets for the consumption of fats. At least here in the US of A by the AMA. so how can someone say that less fat producing foods eaten will help in losing weight. I don't think so. I don't claim to know a lot on this but I do know my body and what makes it tick. I know what it can handle and I know what it won't allow me to do. I have faced it all my life so I don't think anyone should say that a fat person should just stop eating an over abundance of calories. If I am not mistaken it is said that 3500 calories produces a pound of fat on a person. My body throws that out the window.

That's what authorities are now saying. The old 3500 cal.= 1 lb. can now go take a hike.

Even if one's intention is to starve human beings, human beings will starve at remarkably different rates. Metabolic rates differ and genetics differ.

That's why gastric bypass is so successful, I think. People whose genes cause them to have a slow metabolism, start losing weight after gastric bypass because they're almost eating nothing. They reduce the stomach by 90%, leaving only a tiny, baby-sized pouch. With that tiny amt of food, anyone with a normal metabolic rate would probably die of starvation.
