I will specifically NOT come to tomorrow night's party because you promised to be gentle.
Just kidding. I have a friend who will be in town tomorrow who is also on POF and I am trying to talk her into it. If not this one, definately the next one. I have to keep her entertained and she's even shyer than I am!

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 4/1/2006 3:54:45 AM | I suffer from social anxiety, always have. It can manifest itself in panic attacks. It got really bad a few years ago and I found Paxil really helped me a lot. Its not for everyone though. I'm currently weaning myself off of it because it does make me feel kind of tired.
My hope is, that since I've learned to deal so well socially while being on Paxil, that I will be able to take all those lessons I've learned and function without it.

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 4/1/2006 7:20:35 AM | Yes, absolutely.
It makes first dates a special kind of hell, if you know what I mean.
I still haven't managed to get out to any of the meets.
The way I figure it, it's just another part of how I'm built. Not much I can do about it, but make myself do things despite it.
Edit... Nope, I'm not taking any meds for it, don't even have a formal diagnosis. Not exactly a difficult thing to self-diagnose though. ;-)

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 4/1/2006 8:15:22 AM | I was diagnosed 4 yrs ago. I have been trying to manage without meds...but its hard. I dont have a problem leaving the house or anything big like that.. i just feel extrememly akward in social situations. I do commend you on speaking publically about this. Its not usually taken seriously or people assume it means your shy...its not the same at all. I have to agree with MISS BRAT.. i saw a couple "get over it" comments....people dont understand at all. Even coming to the meets isn't the solution...I have been to several meets from here and other sites.. i even hosted the parties on another site but its always hard to actually attend.... i had an anxiety attack at my wedding which was small and all friends and family. So it can happen anytime. It is fairly safe to meet people online though if you are smart and do it somewhere public.
Hopefully talking about it helps for you good luck L~

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 4/1/2006 7:54:16 PM | hmmm ... my son deals with this same problem. He is 20. I think that if a few of us got together, it would be a great way for our friends/family to learn how to socialize in a comfortable environment. and ... I take this subject very serious ... so I am hoping that everyone else who posts on here is too ... there are other threads to go to if one wants to joke. I think if someone is brave enough to post ... he/she is looking for help ... this is a start!!! Proud of you! | |

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 11/13/2008 12:02:20 PM | | I also have social anxiety/phobia. And yeah, it interferes with my life. It's very hard to meet women when I feel a sharp spike of anxiety every time I'm around specific people. Most of the time the anxiety hits me when I'm around certain people, like people roughly my age, or cute girls that I have a crush on. It isn't something I can seem to control, but I still go on living everyday and trying to make the best out of it. I've taken medication for it before, but I always felt like I was changing too much; like I wasn't myself anymore so I stopped taking them. When I'm in a crowd of people, even if I know them, I tend to be reserved and be a lot more quiet then the others. In a way, I like the way I am, but in another way, it's like a burden due to not being able to meet women. As weird as this sounds, I'm a quiet guy, and I like the quiet type girls. It doesn't mix, I don't think; but it'd be cool to meet someone quiet who I can be quiet with and still feel comfortable...But then again, how do you get to know someone if you're both quiet? | |

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 11/13/2008 12:33:16 PM | | Rkoboy, I too suffer from anxiety, both generalized and social. I find my social anxiety isn't too bad when I am out in public with a good friend or family, but alone it can be bad or if I see someone I don't like or have a negative history with. My anxiety is really bad when it comes to being on buses or things like that. So, I know what you are going through. Just take things one day at a time and try to live life as normal as possible despite your ailment. Are you on any type of medication for your anxiety? | |

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 11/13/2008 12:39:26 PM | | You have no idea how much I agree with you, missbrat. I suffer from several other medical conditions besides mental illnesses and the most common things I hear are comments such as, "Just get over it" or "It is all in your head". It is so frustrating. People just don't understand and they never will until they are going through what you are going through. I suffer from something called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and often I hear that I am just lazy. People don't understand that I am truly fatigued and not lazy. It is very frustrating to be so misunderstood and judged ALL the time! | |

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 11/13/2008 3:20:18 PM | I believe that the word in medical lingo is agoraphobia and it is a very real and prevalent disorder especially in our time.I can sure understand your frustration if your friends do not accept your reasons. It is NOT all in your head.I hate shopping in crowds-hence my Christmas shopping is done.If you feel that a social outing is a chore, don't go -unless there are business reasons and you feel obligatedto attend. | |

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 11/13/2008 3:46:58 PM | Anxiety disorders are not at all uncommon, and it can be debilitating to those who suffer from it. Often times, if left untreated, anxiety can escalate and result in agoraphobia.
Avoidance becomes the sufferer's "cure", and in reality, only worsens the disorder.
I recommend (once you feel strong enough to hit it head on) to seek the help of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist. There is one in Edmonton. It is covered by most benefit packages offered by employers.
All people have anxiety ... it's those of us who's anxiety is unwarranted that it becomes a problem. Social gatherings or outings don't bother me in the least, but put me behind the steering wheel of a car and YIKES!!
Medical proffessionals often make the mistake of prescribing anti depressants, but in research, I've discovered that those kinds of prescriptions do NOT help the sufferer (especially those who are not depressed!!) Daily dosages of Ativan or Xanax is also a no, no (unless you suffer daily, and constantly)
Beware of what is being prescribed to you. Do your homework on the topic. Make some phone calls. Seek counsel, or group therapy. Take baby steps if you need to. When you do decide on what treatment suits you, do it on YOUR OWN TIME!! Do NOT let others push you into ANYTHING!!

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 11/13/2008 5:33:42 PM | pity isn't it that so many of these phobias are not defined but treated with a standard prescription....has any of you heard the news this week, where they are suggesting canadian doctors should be required to update their medical education, and recertification every 10 years?
