| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 11/13/2008 10:59:41 PM | | Most of them do it more frequently already. However there are some older docs who have been coasting for a long time without up-dating their credentials. For them. it will be tough to meet the new criteria for practice. | |

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 11/14/2008 8:14:49 AM | | No... but there are days I don't like big crowds and being around a lot of people I don't know. I work better in crowds of family and friends as opposed to strangers. I used to have panic attacks when I was younger, but as I've become more comfortable with myself, they seem to have lessen. Guess it depends on the type of event and who is there. | |

... without up-dating their credentials. ..
Personally, it is not updating that they need to do, for once you become a doctor, you are a doctor, as with the trades people, once you get your certificate for carpentry/plumbing etc., you are as indicated. The area of concern is staying abreast of the current information and philosophies that one has concentrated their practice on.
Why should a gynicologist keep up to date on dental practices and information other than to he able to recommend how to get rid of the wisdom teeth that have all of a sudden grown in the wrong spot?? All medical professionals should have a basic knowledge of body and mind ailments, but they specialize in one field, let those experts treat the ailment, referrals are not a bad thing, we just need a system where a referral does not put one's life on hold or in jeopardy!!
Research has shown that behavioral therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy can be effective for treating several of the anxiety disorders especially agoraphobia.
Behavioral therapy focuses on changing specific actions and uses several techniques to decrease or stop unwanted behavior.
For example, one technique trains patients in diaphragmatic breathing, a special breathing exercise involving slow, deep breaths to reduce anxiety. This is necessary because people who are anxious often hyperventilate, taking rapid shallow breaths that can trigger rapid heartbeat, lightheadedness, and other symptoms. Another technique—exposure therapy—gradually exposes patients to what frightens them and helps them cope with their fears.
For these specific reasons, one should learn to guage their involvement for comfort level, going out to small events (coffee, meals) are better than going to large events (dances, seasonal parties). We all have some of these phobias, but when it effects lifestyle to the point of being anti-social, we must work on it and try our best approach that gives us the healing. Doctors are way to quick to prescribe medications, if they are not needed, one should avoid them, as a growing dependancy for some is rabid!!

Posted: 11/14/2008 8:59:44 PM | | Sorry Duff not all docs are specialists and it is the ones who think they know everything, but have not read a jurnal or attended an educational session that are the scary ones. They do not refer to a specialist until it is too late.I have always been happiest with a family doctor who says "It's time to call in the high-priced help!".In other words, they recognize their scope and make a referral when it is appropriate.

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 11/15/2008 12:55:07 AM | | I have never heard of someone having an actual medical phobia of Christmas trees, but if you say you do then so be it. What exactly is it about Christmas trees that causes you to be afraid if I may ask? How do you feel about other 'normal' types of trees? | |

If so, you should be ashamed of yourself because both anxiety of phobias are real mental illnesses that should not be taken lightly or made fun of. I suffer from anxiety and do not appreciate your immaturity and lack of respect.

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 11/15/2008 8:45:15 AM | Anxiety and phobias are becoming more and more recognized in the medical world as being very serious (and even CONTAGIOUS) ... Think of those who suffer with fear, who are raising children.
Sorry Diesel, but I have to side with oceangrrl in saying that this topic is not one to be made fun of. Would you poke fun at a diabetic? At least they have SOME control over their disease ...

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 10/11/2009 10:07:00 PM | Certainly an interesting issue. Having suffered from this in spurts nearly my entire life, I'll say that I do believe that the key toward sucessful treatment of such "mental illness" issues, lies within finding the actual root source of the issue....... That said, I also believe that far too often, the little magic happy pills are pushed in misdiagnosis within our over strained health care system.... Now when I say "misdiagnosis", for clarity, I suppose what I'm really getting at here, is that far too often it's assumed that the issue is the resultant effect of a chemical imbalance. Certainly for many, this is in fact the case, and such treatment helps. However, for those who's root cause of the disorder is perhaps a traumatic life event, jacking them up on some cerebral****ail of happy may be a temporary solution, but once the side effects of a drug adding "x" doses of something actually not deficient in the system for an extended period will really only confuse the hell outta that person in the end I'm guess'n | |

| Does anyone have social anxiety/phobia? Posted: 10/12/2009 1:15:52 PM | I have social anxiety that I've been dealing with for a while now, and would pass on a couple of suggestions in the form of support groups:
Meetup.com - There is a group called "Calgary Depression Social Anxiety Support" that may be helpful. Details are on the site about where to meet and who is in the group, etc.
Freedom from Fear ( http://freedomfromfear.ca/ ) - This is another group that deals with various anxieties and trying to overcome it with CBT.
I am in both groups and think it may be worth passing along this kind of information.

agoraphobia is not the correct term. Social anxiety or generalized anxiety are the most appropriate.
Many times I cancel socials at the last minute, even appointments with my doc, hairdresser, you name it. Even with the best of friends and/or family, so it has nothing to do with the company in my case. Dating is a particular sort of hell as is forcing ones' self to be host in any capacity. Pushing yourself to mingle is a constant struggle. For the life of me I fail to understand how it comes to easily to others.
Recently, nearly maimed one generous hearted country dancer in Red Deer upon accepting a dance invitation while pushing myself to learn to two-step Although the following headline ran through my head as I accepted his dance invitation, I bit the bullet anyway ...
"Woman with Two Left Feet accidentally tramples renowned country dancer."
He only came away with bruising to both feet but managed to keep dancing the rest of the night. !
I'm relieved I'm in good company JB
