To Be honest
this whole conversation pissed me off!!! one. A fourteen year old is WAY too young to be thinking of a life long branding on her body!!!
second. THE "TRAMP STAMP" can kiss my ass. I have a lower back tat. a very tastefully done tat that means alot to me for alot of diffrent reasons. also it was done way before it started being labled so.. I am also a very respected, sucessful, mom.
ACTIONS SPEAK A WHOLE LOT LOUDER THAN A LOWER BACK TAT!!

I don't think that among *regular* grown adults there is really any symbolism with lower back tattoos. I understand why some people may think of them as purely sexual but that's silly to me, since a tattoo on the breast or pubic area would be seen as the same (and how many zillions of boob tattoos are out there?).

They were/are kind of trendy and mainstream, people from all subcultures get them. I have lower back tattoo, and it was the first one i got (still my only one, but i want more). I picked that area because I could have a larger tattoo that would only really be visible if I wanted it to be. I wish I could see it more often ;-) because it's quite pretty.

I do also think 14 is rather young for a tattoo, but that's not what this topic is about. I agree with others that anyone under 18 seeking a tattoo should watch one being done that is similar to what they want. Mine has 4 different colors and took about 2 1/2 hours to be done, with one 15 minute break. Parts of it were very painful (sides near waist) and parts I barely felt.

I think when it comes to tattoos, it's not so important what label other people place on them, but what an individual sees and likes about a design and location. A little research like you say is good though in case one doesn't want to end up sporting some symbol they really don't agree with.

I have a tat on my lower back, A dolphin jumping out of the water. I am not to sure how that is sexual. lol Anyways my tat symbolizes that i am of free spirit and mind (i am not a spirtual type person) I think that tat's are a symbol of uniqueness and individualism.
That is my thought and opinion.

Tatoos on the lower back are definetly hot... however, I have noticed that girls that show these off tend to be easy. When I go out I tend to look for a girl with a tat in that spot 'cause I know it will be an easy lay.

I have a tattoo on my lower back and have never heard "tramp stamp" and if a guy were to see it doesn't mean that they are going to get laid by me. Just because a female has a tattoo on their lower back doesn't mean they are a slut or tramp and I would guess the ones that do give it up easy would give it up even if they didn't have a tattoo there.
But 14 is way too young for a tattoo in a year or two (maybe even a week) her interest could change and she may not like it anymore and wish she had gotten something else. I would never let my daughter get a tattoo at that age. I have a 7yr old and she says she can't wait to get one and I tell her that she might as well not even think about it until she is 18 and even then I hope she waits. I don't think many shops will let a child that young get a tattoo even with a parents permission and if you did find one I would be really worried about their quality of work. Most shops here in richmond won't even let anyone in under the age of 18 even with a parent.
It's nice to hear that you are an open-minded parent but sometimes you have to draw a line because at 14 she is still just a child and at that age it could just be a fad like a pair of shoes she "must" have. She may be mad at first but at that age I'm sure she will find something else to be mad at you about in no time.

I would have to agree with most of the people and say 14 is WAY TOO YOUNG. The question would be is who is the parent here you or your 14 year old daughter? My son asked me for a tattoo at 14 also and I said NO he was mad for a day or two but he got over it. 2 years later he got his tattoo and he was happy. Being a single parent I always made the choice I might of asked for his opinion but I had the last say. Also for having tattoos I have three, a rose on my leg, tweety bird on my chest( ) and a beautiful angel that's about 10inches on my left shoulder for my mother when she passed away, which took 4 hours of pain but worth it, my wish is to get a male angel on my right shoulder for my father. I also want one on my LOWER BACK (fairy) I think if they are done tastefully that's fine but people have their own taste!

I think that 14 is too young but for different reasons. 18 is an age that has many responsibilities and that is a better time to decide that. I dont think they are tramp stamps. I have one a little higher on my back as seen on my profile and I got mine after having 2 children and going through a messy divorce. It was something that I wanted to do for myself. They are VERY painful. Eventhough the pain doesnt last forever the tattoo does. Getting one at such a young age may be a mistake because having children changes a womans body. Another reason I waited. I have never had anyone tell me mine looked trampy. I desinged and drew it myself so I took a lot of time in deciding what I wanted. There are always stereotypes with everything and anything. That is just the way our society is. Not too many people know about mine because I keep it covered. I dont wear trampy clothes to show it off either. I got it for myself and no one else. I would just tell her that when she turns 18 you will go with her to have it done if she still wants it. But, honestly it hurts like hell!!!!!

The lower back is a perfect spot for a woman. It is hidden, thats the reason I put mine there (and no I'm not a tramp). I don't like them on the shoulder blade or ankle, they don't look very nice if you're wearing an evening gown.

She just wants to do it because all her friends are doing it. She should wait until she is doing it for herself. I think 14 is too young. She should wait until shes at least 18.

She sounds a little young for a tattoo. Tell her if she wants one there when she is 21, she can have it as a birthday present. By then her tastes may have changed.

I think that if you want to support your daughter in getting a tat then i think that you both should at least agree on the pic that she is going to put on her lower back.

My personal thought is no one should get a Tat before there done growing or it will stretch and look bad in a few years. Tell her when shes done growing (which will be 18+) to consider it then, buy her a few packs of 'temp' tattoo's, and when shes done growing, well, it wont matter anywhere near as much what you think unless she wants your opinion. She'll be an adult then.

Well my suggestion for the time being, if she really wants one is to perhaps try a henna tattoo, it is not permanent. I have a normal one, however it was to cover a birthmark, and I waited til I was 30 to make sure I wanted this mark on me the rest of my life. Yes on my back, but just lower left hand corner.

it's also not traditional, it's my fav cartoon character (wildcat from tailspin), and has true meaning to me. The artist and I were talking and I was amazed that so many people get one just to get one without it having meaning.

And even those guys who don't like tattoo's think it's cute, especially after I explain the meaning of it.

I think that at 14 it's too young for permanent changes, and can mimic the words of others, but perhaps there is a halfway point between them..if she is dead set on one she needs to wait til she's 16 and it should have a meaning to her, not just because it's "cool"

But I hearld you as a father in supporting her

LMAO!! I have what some call a "tramp stamp" along with a few others....I got mine because I like how it looks peeking out of my jeans!! And not for any sexual reason! TO EACH THIER OWN! But talk about judging a book by it's cover!!!! I do think 14 may be a bit young. It is the legal age here in Canada though!!
You seem like a pretty cool dad...your daughter is lucky!

14 years old... too young... there is a reason why they cap the age at 18.

I would tell her to wait 4 years and then come back and ask.

tramp stammp.... that's hilarious... that was where I got my second tat... makes sense now that I think about it. But I never thought about it when I got it done... that's a little screwy!

i have to agree with everyone else 14 is way too young to think about a tat...but the thing about back tatts is that a lot of women dont think of the consequences of doing a tattoo there. when you are ready to have children you may need an epidural. Doctors are now looking into the complications of back tattoo's and having to do tests on the spine especially having an epidural. there is a greater chance of infection becuase doctors need to inject the needle right through where the tattoo is and into the spinal column. just something to think about.

Card Guy, I would tell her she has to wait until she is 18.
No reputable and safe tattooist will work on someone that young.

Needless to say if you say no, she may go out and get it on her own from a more unsavory tattoo artist. Maybe promise her you will take her to someone really good in your area on her 18th birthday. If she is into tattoos and understands good work vs bad work that will be a good teaser for her to wait.
I'm thinking she wants one just to be "cool". Maybe give in on some other area, like something that she really wants that might be a bit "too old" for her but safer.

I have a big trampstamp, so that must mean that instead of typing on a personals message board while my son is sleeping, I'm really out whoring around at bars and getting laid.

i have a lower back tattoo, and i think they look ok and contrary to wot some people think you dont have to be a slut to have one. the reason i had it there is so i dont have to see it when im 80 lol and they can be covered or seen when i want....you mst be a cool dad as i wont be letting my 14 year old daughter get a tattoo yet at 18 yeah but each to there own. I think they look nice but i got one. good luck and tell her to get a design she loves and can look at alot before she gets it done....

Card,
Issues of tattoos is basically personal choice. I have no problem with them, even hosted a tattoo party at my house AND went to have tattoos WITH my kids. I only had one rule petaining to them, they couldn't have one before they were 18. After that, they were considered adults and capable of making their own choices where Mom was not responsible.
I admit my personal feelings is that 14 is WAY too young to have something permanent like that done.

Good Luck

hi. i just wanna say that its great that you listen and respect your daughter enough to ask this question, you are an example to alot of us parents.
i, myself have 10 tattoos but each one is carefully designed by myself and each one has only been used on me. all my tattoos mean something to me, i have a tattoo of a japanese dragon (quite small) with ying and yang on it to symolise my twin brothers that are 20 years younger then myself, on my lower back, does this make me a slut? i dont think it does as all my tattoos are personnal and people only see them when i decide to show them.
i also have two other small tattoos on my back and one of the ones i have on my ankle is in memory of my brother, sister and my first son that we lost. i find tattoos when done properly and tastefully can be a very nice sight. what ever you decide to do, i wish you all the best, and i hope you and your daughter dont regret it. take care.

Hi It seems that long ago you entered this dilemma.

My opinion a fourteen year old girl is being rebellious. showing off for her peer group. When youre fourteen you never think of the future and what a tattoo can have long term regrets. My daughter is nine years old this month and I know for a fact i would never let her have a tattoo being underage for a start when she turned eighteen then it his her choice.

I have had a tattoo on the bottom of my spine which was most painful. But worth the pain. My two beautiful childrens initials are etched in my back 4 ever. with a colourful flower through it. Children are for life and everyone that sees my back will comment on how the tattoo shows my devotion through art and the love i have for them. My tattoo was nothing sexual but a statement of showing the world that my daughter and son are mine.

she's only 14... she doesn't even have her adult body yet. whatever she gets now is going to be a stretched out, stretch marked pretty little mutilation she's going to regret. her arms aren't as long as they're going to be when she grows up, her legs, her feet, and her back is going to change as she grows too. i'd say bottom line, no, she's way too young, and she WILL end up regretting it. getting a tattoo removed is much more painful and costly then the patience that will cost her nothing to wait.
