^^That is sad...that people have preconceived ideas of what type a person is, based on something such as body art! Not sure I agree that "most men" dislike them?? Point is...you get them for YOURSELF, and not for some man or any other person.

This reminds me of a biker poem I read...how the general consensus SEES them versus the TRUTH...such as:

You see the leather and bike and assume I am mean...but you did not see me handing out Toys For Tots...

Wish I could remember the whole thing....

^^So ALL women who have a lower back tattoo are "tramps" and you would not even consider getting to know them?!

This is SO sad!! Even if a woman WAS a tramp...maybe she changed her ways or something...so she is doomed for life?! How juvenile! That is like saying ALL MEN who have a arm tattoo are mean...all men who wear tighty whities are geeks...all men who...well, you get my point.

I am NOT a tramp. Had some wilder days in my teens...but did not get my "tramp stamp" or other tats until my 30's!

Card guy:
I dont think it is a good idea to let your 14 year old get any tats. I have two girlfriends right now that are getting their tats removed that they got in their teens way back in the 90's and tattoos were not even played out like they are now, and i am saying this because it is the big thing to do now, along with piercings but will it be years from now because I am sure she will regret it later and have you asked her why she really wants it? I have two teenagers and I told them both that I would prefer them never to get tats but if they do, they will have to be 18. My daughter wants her belly button pierced and I told her no on that one. It is forever unless you want to pay 50.00 + to have them burned off later and that is just for one session and it take quite a few and still, no guarentee they will be removed.

hi i must admit its the first time i have heard of this as a tramp stamp kinda makes me chuckle, but ppl could get a a tat anywhere and get could a slut! to all of you that think thats what it means you could go out to a nightclub and where a skirt and low cut top and get called a slut so that dont bother me in the slightest.
i have 3 tats encounting i had my first on at 18 that was on my lower back and i have got to say its probably the most painful one i have had yet!!!! i think 14 is a bit young to be putting permanent tats on there body, i would wait a couple of years till shes sure about it...
i will tell you one thing u seem like a real gd dad respecting your daughters wishes , just wait a bit longer

hope all goes well :-)

awesome move that you are doing this.. Even if she doesn't go through with it she knows that you are cool enough to talk about anything with. Sacrifice a "tramp stamp", for possible issues down the road. such as the exploring sexuality and drug use... Communication is the key!

Most tattoo artists I know wouldn't do one on anyone under 16, in case they grow again, and it ends up looking terrible. While this is probably not much of an issue for a girl, as most of them never get much taller than they are at 14, this might work for you: Tell her no one who's any good will do in till she's 16, but tell her that if her marks stay good till then, you'll not only sign for her, you'll pay for it too. When my son's g/f wanted her navel pierced, that's what her parents told her. It worked for them. I did the same for my son when he wanted his first tat at 15. Good thing he waited, too, he grew 9" that year, had to replace all his clothes. Imagine what that tat would have looked like?

Gawd It seems kinda funny that young teen and Kids really notice tattoos and piercings the most they look at them in awe amd wonder Isnt it fair that the ones that are really into it get a say Ive seen mothers pierce a babys ears at 3 months others feel its more resonsible to let the child decide here are all the children deciding when its the most exciting for them and the parents saying no way or wht will happen if I let them what next yeah what next we all want to know. And whose fault will it be. lol

At 14, it is illegal to get a tattoo in most states...even with parental consent. What happened to teeny boppers wanting piercings? At least they're less permanent. I have a lower back tat along with a couple of others, but there's no way in hell my parents would have let me do that back then. I had to wait until I paid for it and was old enough to legally do it.

iam totally with tats here bud but shes 14 give her a time limit tell her when shes 16 and still wants the same tat youll gladly let her get it
when i was 14 i wanted a turtle and at 22 i finally got my turtle
at 14 she likes somthing now at 18 she will be a completely different person
or if she still wants a tat maybe let her get one on her ankle first a pretty flower or somthing she she can experiance it and realize it is permanant
get her to do research on tattoo places and the upkeep and the longjevity of the tattoo place she wants and get her to really do her homework
if your still ok with her getting one and she displays the kind of maturity for that desision

At 14, the lower back is not a good place for a tattoo. In her future what IF she decides to have children? The risks that come with lower back tattoos, and after giving birth, the stretching and such, the tattoo doesnt look as good. After my brothers ex had a child, her dolphin she had on her lower back, now looks like a whale!
She's still young and her body will still be going through a lot of changes. Let her go watch a few tattoos be done, she may end up changing her mind. My kids went with me, at the time was 7 & 3, when I got a tattoo with my youngest daughters name on it, and they both freaked out and decided they never want a tattoo. They both love to see their own tattoo I have for the 2 of them, but they dont think its worth it.

well cardguy. i got the tat on my lower back when i had my daughter at 17 it wasnt long ago but i regret it wholeheartedly. first off i cant even c it and the fact that i never knew that it was a turn on for guys and the tat is of my daughters name. regret putting her name there. but i figured my first tat it was goin to hurt and i didnt want to c the needle!! i now have 2 otha tats and goin for anotha they r very addicting. i guess as long as ur daughter knows the facts about what she wants to do and whatever she gets tattooed on her has meaning that would b cool. its her body and she is at the age were she needs to learn to deal with the consequences of her actions. my daughters almost 5 and ahe keeps askin to get her tounge pierced bcause mommy has one. i told her when she's 16 i'll take her to get it done. now everyone knows the steriotype of that one!!! but i got mine for fashion not for the otha thing, but as long as i let her know that ppl r goin to steriotype her and make assumptions of herand that is what she wants to deal with then its her body her choice.

New ink promises easy tattoo removal
Pigment could make it a cinch for those who change mind

Shari Roan, Los Angeles Times

Sunday, December 24, 2006

You once adored Janie, but Laura is your honey now. That dragon circling your arm wowed your college buddies, but the executives in the office aren't nearly as impressed.

Just as the number of Americans sporting tattoos has soared in the past decade, so has membership in another group: people who want their bodywork removed. Only then do they come to know the truth -- that laser tattoo removal is painful, expensive and may not do the job completely.

Soon there may be a solution to the phenomenon of tattoo regret -- removable tattoo ink. A company founded by doctors says it will begin selling such ink early next year. The ink is applied just as with any tattoo, and will remain in place as long as desired. But if the owner later decides that the artwork has to go, it can be removed fully and safely with a single laser treatment.

The founders of the New York company making the removable ink, Freedom-2 LLC, say their goal is to help those who have come to regret permanently decorating their bodies. But backers say the technology will not only simplify tattoo removal, it will create an expanded market for body art -- since consumers can be now assured that the tattoo will come off easily and without exorbitant cost.

"I think it will open a floodgate for people who want tattoos," says Dr. Bruce Saal, a Los Gatos dermatologist who specializes in laser tattoo removal and has invested in the company. "People will say, 'I want to do something a little wild. Now that I know it's not a lifelong commitment, I'll do it.' "

But others wonder if tattoo artists and their customers will spurn the new ink if it doesn't meet their artistic needs.

Almost one-quarter of U.S. adults have at least one tattoo, according to a study of 500 Americans published September in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Of those, 17 percent were considering removal, the survey found.

Many doctors who perform laser tattoo removal, however, say that as many as half of all people with tattoos eventually want them off.

"A very high majority of people would desire to have them removed if there was a simple and easy way," Saal said.

Most conventional tattoos can be removed, but even a simple, small, one-color tattoo can require several laser treatments at a cost of around $1,000. Removals of large, multicolored tattoos can require more than a dozen laser treatments and cost $5,000 or more. And no, laser tattoo removal is not covered by medical insurance.

Multiple treatments are needed to avoid skin damage from the laser. During conventional tattoo removal, brief pulses of energy are aimed at the tattoo, heating skin cells and breaking up the ink particles. Then the body's natural ability to remove foreign particles clears away the ink fragments. The top layer of skin, however, often bleeds slightly and forms scabs. Because of the inflammation produced by the laser, only a small area of skin can be treated at one time.

There are other complications, too. Doctors often don't know which type of ink was used, at what depth the ink was applied and other factors that could help make removal easier, Saal said. (He is a member of Freedom-2's scientific advisory board.) Scarring can occur if multiple treatments are needed, and some tattoos can't be completely removed.

Some people who have gotten tattoos in recent years may have assumed that laser tattoo removal would deftly deal with any regrets, says Dr. Tina Alster, director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery in Washington and who is not associated with Freedom-2.

But, she adds, they are often stunned to learn of the cost and time involved. "They thought it would be as easy to take off as to put on -- in just one session," she said. "But now with this new dye and polymer, we will be able to remove it in one session."

Freedom-2's ink is removable because it is encapsulated in tiny beads made of polymethylmethacrylate, a synthetic material commonly used in surgical glue and in many types of artificial joints. The fact that the ink is encased in the tiny spheres doesn't affect the application of the tattoo or its appearance, says Martin Schmieg, chief executive of Freedom-2.

"Our inks look and feel and give a result equal to the current tattoos," he says.

Because of the way the beads are constructed, they fall apart when laser energy is applied, Schmieg said. Unpublished tests on humans and animals show that only one laser treatment is typically needed to fully remove a Freedom-2 tattoo and that most Q-switched lasers that doctors use for tattoo removal can be used for the job. A one-time laser treatment to remove a tattoo should cost less than $1,000, Schmieg predicts.

The new ink will be slightly more expensive than conventional ink but will likely add only about $50 to the cost of most tattoos, Schmieg says, because most of the cost related to tattooing is for the artist's time and talent.

The company will sell only black ink initially but will eventually add other colors. It is also developing a "time-limited tattoo," which will consist of ink in biodegradable polymer beads that dissolve and fade over time.

But tattoo artists may prove lukewarm to the idea of removable artwork. According to Dr. Stuart Kaplan, a dermatologist in Beverly Hills who does laser tattoo removal and isn't associated with Freedom-2, tattoo artists are picky about the colors of their inks. They care about whether they blend well and are durable. An inferior or expensive ink won't fly.

Tattoo artists are also unlikely to be swayed by the convenient removal factor because as a rule, they don't think about tattoo removal, says Sailor Bill Johnson, executive director of the Orlando, Fla.-based Alliance of Professional Tattooists.

"That's not our concern," he says. "If someone comes into my tattoo studio and says, 'I may want to remove it later,' we'd just try to talk them out of getting one."

Johnson says part of the experience of tattooing is the commitment. When someone has "Sophia Forever" inked on his biceps, the sentiment is that Sophia is permanent, just like the tattoo. Besides, says Johnson, "You make that decision in your life that you are going to put this artwork on your body. It's a statement that you don't worry about what other people think of you."

Johnson says he won't use the ink. "To me, it's a negative to the profession."

But Chris Winn, a San Diego tattoo artist, says he was instantly intrigued when he heard about the ink at a tattoo convention.

"I think it will be interesting to see the different ways this can bring in clients," he said. "I think it will bring in a group of people who love tattoos but are afraid to get them."

CARDGUY; Personally I have one tat, on my shoulder of winnie the pooh! Now do ya wanna know the comments I have gotten on it? What are you 12? Thats soo childish.. ect. Well I never thought tats were childish, there will always be someone no matter whom it maybe to criticize your daughters tattoo no matter what it maybe of, or where it maybe but honestly if that is what she wants let her go for it, Who cares what other people think!!! I only read these posts here online because I plan to get another tat (on my lower back) this Saturday and my friend wanted me to know what "society" thinks. Well F**K society I say!!! She is her own person a UNIQUE individual if someone looks at her and see's this tat and says "slut" or "tramp stamp" ohhh well!!! because "those who mind dont matter and those who matter dont mind". Let her be her own person, yes 14 is young but who is to say she will not like this when she is older??? No one can say she will or will not only time will tell!!! I will always love my winnie the pooh one even when I am 60! lolz anyways COOL DAD do what you feel is right f**k what other people say! Dads know best! ;) Danee

I have 5 tattoo's myself, and I have none on my lower back. Danee, I have a winnie the pooh tatt on my right shoulder blade also... but anyways, all the tatts I have, mean something towards a family memeber.. In my eyes, a tattoo on the lower back, gives a guy a reason to think that she is a "slut". If the girl doesnt show off her lower back, then to me, whats the sense in having it then. If a girl does show off her back, then thats when the "slut" comes in.. I find that putting a tattoo there is pointless.

I also have piercings, and ppl have asked me what if my daughter(9yrsold) wants to get them when she's a teenager. I have stated if all I have to worry about is tattoo's and piercings and funni color looking hair then I'm lucky!!!! I don't believe because you have tattoo's or piercings your a SLUT!!!! I think that's niave of ppl to think that and is not a fair statement!!!

OP: I got my first tattoo at 15 on my hip, my mother paid for it.. never turned me into a sex toy.. and to the person who replied first: You have no clue what you're talking about so shush.

Hell, I have over 10 now (some has melded into a partial sleeve I'm working on so technically more) and I'm still not a sex toy =)

Although I did recently read in a Cosmo that a lot of men find tattoos on women a huge turn-on because if we're willing to sit in a chair and have someone wound us with a needle for large periods of time, we have cajones

It's not about the tattoo. It's about the location. Tats (especially of the "tribal" -- whatever the hell that means to most people -- variety) on the lower back are called tramp stamps because of location. I've also heard them called bulls eyes. Now, if you have a tiny bit of imagination, you can figure out where that name comes from.

Lower back tats CAN look great, if you have an original design. However, the majority of tramp stamps are devoid of originality, and look trashy. I have 7 tats, and want to get more (one or two, and I have one that needs to be covered). I've considered a lower back piece, but have yet to find a real tattoo artist in my area. Most of them just want to pick some flash off the wall and make it big enough to fit the area.

I think I need to visit a bigger city for my next tat.
