To the OP, allow a 14 yr old to get a Tat, what have you been smoking ?

Tats are for adults, she wants a Tat, tell her she can have one when she's 18 period.

Of course my personal feeling is that a Tat on a womans body is like grafitti on a work of art, they are just ugly blotch's of ink that only detract from the picture.

Of course I was raised to view tats on anybody male or female as an indication of low class and in the case of women low morals, but hey to each his own, well once they are adults anyway.

Speaking as a mother and as someone who has tattoos, I agree that 14 is way to young; however I think it is great that you are actually listening to your daughter. I am sure we can all agree children are temperamental and they change like the wind. I have this so called "tramp stamp" and I have never once in the 7 years I have had it been called anything reprehensible.

I have 5 tattoos, I love them; each one has a significant amount reasoning behind them. I understand how some people dislike tattoos and I respect their choice in not having them. First and foremost, people are going to judge you regardless of how you truely are. Its what I like to refer to as the "human condition". People judge you no matter what, it could be something as simle as your hairstyle. The whole reason to life is to live it, don't get caught up in what others think of you and be happy within yourself.

So far it seems that you are teaching your daughter that and I for one couldn't be more approving. I would however hold off on any ink work until she is solid in her personality. At the age of 14 she is still growing as a person and she could be completely different in a matter of months. Kudos to you for actually listening to her desire for ink but, keep your mind above making her happy. You know as well as I that ink is forever and no one should be drawn on unless they are completely positive they want it.

Sooooo... that makes me a woman of loose morals then? And my mother, too? Hell, my entire family is low class then, according to you..

Wow.. should I bow in your presence and give thanks for even being able to read the same thread as you?

What a bunch of self-righteous bollocks. It sounds like if you don't have any tattoos you're better than everyone else... that is so SO wrong.

Don't know if that makes you and your family low class or morally depraved or not, don't know, don't care, nor do I wish to in either case.

You may bow and give thanks if you wish but it's not required.

I stated my opinion as finding them unattractive, and then provided a bit of insight as to perhaps why.

And whether you like it or not that’s exactly the way a lot of people in mine and older generations were raised, and like it or not it is something too few people consider before permanently disfiguring themselves with so called body art that may be no more than a fad.
I also think far to few consider tats may one day impact their ability to get a job or promotion due to the stereo types associated with tats.
All of this may change with time, but it may not yet be that time.

And in my opinion a woman with out tats ... is better, for me atleast then one with tats.

I think a tiny, discreet one that could be covered later would be okay for a young person. But for a lower back tat or anything larger, I would make her wait until she was an adult.

As for tats being low class, cheap, etc. - good artwork is expensive. I come from a wealthy family and am an educated, well travelled person. Tattoos are artwork. No one looking at me would ever guess I have tats - and they are never visible for work, etc.

I was just wondering who raised you to believe this and when it comes to morales and ethics is this a proper attitude in the first place. Many Cultures have Body Art not to mention individual freedom and right to live and let life without the holier than thou blazai comment above. Of course he was RAISED to VIEW others with CONTEMPT whats that about? regardless of this small point is does make sence to wait until a mature age.

Thinking ahead you know how much kids just love to blame their parents - Think of all the arguements you'll avoid

Won't you just love it when they say or if they say it all your fault - you let me do it I was too young then, you should have known better when they perhaps are trying to get it removed. Worse yet it has the Boyfriends name or girlfriends name. You werent supposed to let me Thats the best reason to to say youre not old enough you'll understand later. Ha Ha Ha

Message 37 had it right. Having a tatt done before you're finished growing will distort the tattoo and ruin it as you grow larger. So for a purely aesthetic reason she shouldn't have one yet. Tramp stamp pmsl where do you guys come from? Talk about generalisations and prejudice sad, very sad.

wow! someone told me about this recently because I was having a conversation about my own tattoo. I got mine when I was 21. I wanted it to be on the lower part of my back which is actually right above the "crack". I thought that the tattoos that show when you are sitting down in a lowrise jean looked hot on other women. Apparantly....that is true, just in a slutty, negative way. Mine ended up placed way higher than I requested. It is located in the upper lower back. About four inches above the crack. So, I'm hoping that no one would consider this a "tramp stamp". But it's kindof funny because you can't see it when I sit down. The only way a regular person would see it is if I had a low cut dress on that went way down my back. I can't wear this kind of dress anyways but I actually wish I could and that the tattoo wasn't there so I could show of my beautiful bare skin (which is always sexier than a tattoo, in my book).

As for your daughter....tell her to wait! She may regret her decsion and she is too young to make that decision. If I could go back to 21 I wouldn't do it again....knowing what I know now. Ask her if she thinks it's classy and sophistocated? Ask her what kind of woman she really wants to be when she grow up. Then ask her to wait.

I, like many women, got my "tramp stamp" at an early age. But you know what? I still love it. I have added two more since then on my stomach and on my hip. I love all of my tats. Now, as far as a 14 year old getting one......no way. My parents wouldn't even let me get one when I turned 18 (have to have parents permission until your 19 here) so i waited and got it at 19.

It's worrying how old the original post is. Did the OP go out and get the tart art done? Kidding! Tats can look great, but not on children. Having said that, temporary tattoos on teenage daughters might be a good idea. Something along the lines of 'If you can read this, you're too close.' Just until they hit thirty or so.

I got my first tattoo at 16.. I ended up pretending that my best friend's sister was my mother.. Some tatto artists out there are sooo retarded, that they only care about the money. I look at what the tattoo shop looks like on the outside first before I go in. I went into a tattoo shop before in Ottawa, ontario, and I seen a used needle on the floor in the front hallway.. I turned around and left. You have to be careful when it comes to tattoo shops. That being said, Tattoo's on the lower back, I would say not to, especioully for a 14 yr old, because she is going to get bigger as she grows, and so will the tattoo. I got a butterfly there, and I have had 2 kids, and it kinda looks like some kind of whale lol.. Unless its a big tattoo to begin with, I wouldent recommend getting a small tat there.

I love a nice "tramp stamp", otherwise known as a lower back tattoo, on a hot girl!

"I have heard that some B/F's love to look at them (and you can imagine what they're doing while they're looking!)"

You are exactly right about that, my friend! And that's exactly the reason why I like the "tramp stamp" so much!

I also like to refer to it as a "target".

As long as the tramp stamp doesn't say this way in with an arrow, what's the harm?

I thought lower back tattoos were called 'pull-out targets'

My biggest parenting decision at the moment is whether or not to buy my 11 year old daughter a bra. She has NO development yet, not even puffy nipples. I told her we could get a training bra, but she wants something padded with underwire! (she weighs 65lbs, and can fit in size 6 clothes) I told her no way. Training bra or nothing.

Lord help me in three years if she comes asking for a tattoo...

It telegraphs "TRAMP STAMP" as well as "This girl is easy".

the argument of it being "art" is an attempt to corrupt traditional value systems.

Art is purchased and hung on walls, or sculpted.

A tattoo on your BACK cant even be seen by you without contortionism.

As a father, I told my daughter she could get anything she wanted once she was 18, and OUT OF MY HOUSE.

There is also a point of view that says it has to do with self-image hatred. Havent studied that one enough to comment.

Where do you come up with that? It is art. Tattoo artists are just that, they are ARTISTS! (at least the good ones are anyway).

Who are you to say that art is only to be hung on walls, or sculpted?

"There is also a point of view that says it has to do with self-image hatred. Havent studied that one enough to comment."

If I were you I wouldn't waste my time bothering to study that, because it's bullshit! In fact that's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard!

Maybe it is art for that tatoo artist, but it cannot possibly be art for the person wearing it, if for no other reason that the wearer cannot view/see/behold it.

Tramp Stamp: The Lower Back Tattoo
Let's examine the Tramp Stamp. Many women are getting them; many guys are drooling over them. The lower back tattoo, also known as a tramp stamp or ass antlers, is becoming more and more common. And since so many people are getting the lower back tattoo, we must ask...have tramp stamps gained any class over time? Have they become acceptable for good girls"? In a word: No. Ask any group of guys, "What do you think of a girl with a lower back tattoo versus a girl without one?" You will quickly find your answer.

Pop culture has embraced the tramp stamp. But then again, over time, pop culture also embraced the mullet, flannels over t-shirts, parachute pants, stirrup pants, leisure suits, and virtual pets. Hindsight is 20/20. The difference is that these items could all be thrown out or changed. A tramp stamp is yours until it is a gramp stamp!
Showing their Tramp Stamps
Quote from Wedding Crashers (2005)
"Tattoo on the lower back? Might as well be a bullseye. "

From the Urban Dictionary :
In case you haven't heard them all, these are the terms often associated with the lower back tattoo. I won't put the definitions here, but feel free to also look up bullseye, target, and splat tat.
Ass Antlers
A type of tattoo, usually worn by women, on the lower back and branching upwards from the buttcrack. From the original German "Arschgeweih".
Tramp Stamp
A tattoo on the lower back of a female. Denotes the perceived correlation between having a tattoo in this location and being sexually promiscuous. The larger the tramp stamp, the more promiscuous the female, goes the common lore. Popular designs include butterflies, flowers, vines, tribal designs, wings....
Whore Tag
A small tattoo usually located on the small of he back of a female. They can be located elsewhere on the female body, but to qualify it must be something very generic like a lady bug, flower, or a design.
Santa Cruz License Plate
tattoo on a womens back above her booty
License Plate
A tattoo located above the buttocks, generally spanning from one hip to the other.
Alley Tag
A lower back tattoo on a hoop-earring hood rat (a girl who sleeps with various men in the neighborhood).
Butt Antlers
A tribal tattoo on the lower back of a somewhat skanky female, another term for tramp stamp. A milder form of the phrase Ass Antlers.
Whale Tail
The whale tail is the shape formed when a thong or g-string rides up high over a womans trousers. Often accompanied by the tramp stamp.

Well it's still art for the person wearing the good old "tramp stamp". Just because the girl that has it can't see it doesn't mean it is no longer "art"

There is no doubt though, that a nice "tramp stamp" is not intended to be for the viewing pleasure of the girl that has it, it is intended to be for the viewing pleasure of others; specifically, the guy that is nailing her doggy style!!

Oh I have one (4), but it is the bottom half of my back, not just the bottom bit.... Glad I know the name now, thank you. Ohh might change my profile name...

If people think they are easy, so bit it, if I shave my head does that also make me a lesbian? So anyone who has had cancer is a lesbian for shaving her head? So friends of mine who have shaved their heads due to life threatening illness, look like lesbians walking down the road, just because you dont know them or their history? (Just a female perspective here)

I don't dye my hair, does that mean that people who do are insecure about what they look like?

Well, come on very judgemental. Lables and all that...

Cherie xx

Love you all xxx

Haven't read all the posts but IMO...

If a girl is going to be a slut, tramp, wh ore etc etc etc....it isn't going to be because of a tattoo in a certain location. It's because she IS a slut, tramp etc etc etc

Short hair on a woman does not make her a lesbian unless she's using brylcream and smells of old spice.
But I have to say I've never seen a tramp stamp I didn't like, must have something to do with how it's viewed.
