I suggest that you should make a list of things you are looking for and compare it to the places you are interested in-

For example, if you want a sampling of ethicly diverse populations, you might want to look at the east coast. I see your from Scandinavia. You might want to consider somewhere that has a Scandinavian population so that you can sorta "go home" from time to time. I don't know if any concentrations of Scandinavians on the east coast, but maybe Wisconsin or Minnesota has some of your fellow countrymen.

Also the weather is something to consider. I froze my butt (and a few other things....) off in Chicago one New Years'. It wasn't so much the cold as the driving winds off the lake. If you are sick of winters like that, you might consider San Diego. 72' F or near it year round.

If you are into museums and all that, you might want to consider Washington DC. The cost of living is outrageous though.

That brings me to my last point- you need to decide what you can afford and what job market is best for you.

A lot of things to consider. Choose wisely and have fun!!

maybe you can travel and see the whole country - i`ve been to every state in the USA but alaska and it is a very diverse place. Detroit, motor city madhouse, while you are there buy the most popular tourist tshirt avalable Detroit : the city where the weak are killed and eaten. watch`em put another on the BBQ. and whatever you do go to California. San Diego. LA. San Fran. on the way to Cali stop in Vegas and slap a ho`s ass on the Vegas strip.

The West Coast is where it's at!

Seattle is a beautiful city with a laidback vibe and very friendly people. The neighborhood of Ballard is home to Seattle's Scandinavian community.

That said, I may be moving to Cali in a year or two. But I don't think I'll ever move away from the West Coast (moved here from Chicago 6 years ago), unless I move out of the US altogether. :-)

I am very suprised no one has suggested Washington DC. It is clean with tons to do and many attractions there are free. Boston is also a great city, more of an upscale city than many of the ones mentioned. New York is the most action packed, the busiest and for sure has the most to do.

As has been posted, it depends on your taste.

But the best kept secret in the entire USA is Asheville, NC. Would be there now if my son wasn't in Texas.

Seattle is a nice city. Very artsy vibe, if you are into that kind of thing.

It does seem to spawn a lot of serial killers though...

Norfolk Virginia is a great place too.

You know there is no Eutopia, right? Ok. I live in Virginia, but am from Austin. Austin is very cool, VERY fun place to street party (6th st.). But don't argue with the police. Austin City Police DO not play and their attitudes are NOT good, lol!! Love the police officers here in Virginia. So polite.

East Lansing, Michigan. I lived there for a year, and the people there were great. And close to good shopping, Detroit, Windsor Ontario, a 4 hr drive to Chicago, not far from some great amusement parks. And you won't feel too far off with all the excitement of hockey (except the fact that you have to deal with Red Wings fans haha).

Isn't it Money magazine that yearly gives it's best? You can also go there, enter parameters of your choosing, and it spits out the answer for you. Unfortunately, they won't get you and set you up there too.

As far as cities go, I like NYC having lived in Connecticut and visiting often. It is a city that is very real, fast paced, but with very caring, not apathetic people, like many american cities are.

I bet you'd like Seattle though - if you are scandinavian, the seaside climate, and the vibe there are similar. It rains there far too much though.

I love Newport Beach/Balboa, CA (on the peninsula), as I lived there for 4 years and loved it. But I also say Chicago, IL is also high on the list, as the people are really nice and helpful, the shopping is fab, and the food is top notch. I live in Cleveland and can say without hesitation, it is NOT that great....

You mentioned Columbus --nice place but just 50 miles south is Dayton and another 40 south of that is Cincinnati cincy is on the river and has a much more rolling terrain while Columbus is very flat . With so much industry leaving the area for 3rd world labor the economies may not be great but Cincinnati is probably the friendliest city its size and It has the reds and bengals and racing at Kentucky speedway plus it is less than 100 miles from Lexington ky , Louisville Ky , Columbus Ohio and Indianapolis IND. good luck in your search

Last time i went to the states i stayed in Seattle, Chicago, and Pittsburgh amongst other places. Allthough i wasnt there long, Seattle seemed to be really kinda "fresh" and relaxing and i think its name as the "emerald city" does suit it because it seemed very chilled and green and fresh and kinda clean and Hi Tech in a way. Chicago just seemed to have a great buzz about it, like a real rhythm, heart beat pounding away around you, I loved doing round downtown and the Loop made getting round so easy. As for Pittsburgh, i stayed with a friend in North Versailles south of the centre. Pittsburgh kind of reminds me of Newcastle in the UK (dont know if you have been to Newcastle or not)....lots of bridges, a smaller city, but with everything a big city has, and a pretty downtown area. As far as i know theres alot of hi tech jobs in pittsburgh too as its supposed to be in a bit of a boom period. Good luck wherever you end up anyway!

I live in the DC area... its too expensive if your just moving here and traffic sucks. Though everyone flocks to washington dc for jobs in politics. I prefer living in Boston, i went to school there and i agree with others about Chicago and living on the west coast, like California.

I'm not personally a big fan of north american cities but I do enjoy visiting Seattle in the US (heck, I love the West coast region in general, would move out West but for the earthquakes and the winters).

San Diego. Great weather, beautiful scenery, lots to do and see. Its not just one of the best large cities in the US. Its one of the best cities period in my opinion. Unfortunately, like most big cities, you better have alot of "paper" if you want to really enjoy living there.

A much, much smaller city but probably just as expensive...lol would be San Luis Obispo, on the Central California Coast. Its very nice there too.

If I was'nt allergic to cold weather, Chicago would be a nice place to live as well. I've always enjoyed the time i've spent alongside the lake.
