| off roading Posted: 4/17/2006 7:19:33 PM | it doesnt matter what you have just as long as it has a smoke stack lol oh and lockers | |
|
| off roading Posted: 4/17/2006 7:53:05 PM | Ok. It all depends on what size of pickup and SUV you're talking about and what kind of offroading you want to do.
Everything comes into play.
Engine size gears torque departure and approach angles wheel travel wheel base...
what do you want to know specifically?

| off roading Posted: 4/17/2006 8:24:35 PM | Thanks Im just going to get a 6 cylinder 4X4. Just rough roads, no over boulder driving, maybe a bit of mud. Mainly just driving on unkept roads. | |
|
| off roading Posted: 4/17/2006 10:13:32 PM | Automatic Jeep Cherokees are decent 4x4's as long as you don't need the utility of a pickup.
Remove the rear sway bar (as long as you don't tow anything), get disconnects for the front swaybar, 1" spacer for the front springs and 1" lift shackles for the rear, throw on some 30" AT or MT tires, and make sure you have some tow points mounted to the "frame" (it's a bit of a hybrid unibody) and you're good to go for most of the stuff you'll run into around here, other than deep mud. Mid to late 90's are a decent years as long as you don't plan on doing major lift modifications.
Mud is really hard on moving parts by the way. Get a grease gun and make sure you regrease everything after doing any significant mudding.
Oh yeah, if you're doing anything where you could conceivably get stuck, don't go alone, or make sure you have a winch.

| off roading Posted: 7/25/2006 5:49:34 PM | has this thread died as well...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm where is all the off roaders........................... | |
|
| off roading Posted: 9/11/2006 4:53:34 PM | I'll try to revive this old dog of a thread !! ! Hey whitey you sound like a newbie to 4x4in so a great start is an older cherokee. They're comfy and capable trucks and if you break it wreckers have rows of them lol. They're relatively easy to fix yourself and good on the highway. I have two vehicles and my cruiser costs me $79 a month to insure. Look for a cherokee and hit the trails. You prolly don't need a winch till you get a lil more crazy. Or better get a buddy with one and you both will be set to rip it up!!!.
Seems like there's a lot of wheelers in pof. Might have to make an outing. POF goes wheelin? Oh oh.................
Cheers...... | |

| off roading Posted: 12/19/2006 10:05:38 AM | What about my 94 Jeep YJ 4X4 4.0 litre in line 6. That ride is sweet to get to the places I fish and hunt. PRO"S Its got a 4 inch lift Turns on a dime Just like a quad but bigger and has a kick @ss stereo Short wheel base for the washouts Can go topless You know your alive when driving it-hold on to your kidneys' I look good in it manual transmition-cant beat it
Con's Not that much space for gear-small trailer would be good or a large roof rack Known to tip over
No room for my enduro bike-again a trailer would be nice The dogs are a little tight in there-100lb Black Lab and a fat Blue Healer Small gas tank-carry a gas can both for the Jeep and the fire......now that's a fire
PS-always take tools, and extra belt, duct tape and some fuses..and a portable air pump too!
There's a pic of me,the JEEP and my belly boat on my profile...and the fish I got too. They made me take down the pic of the deer I got...damn animal rights...nice deer though. I am a master butcher-9 years in the trade so any of you hunters need a lesson on How to cut up game 101 .....I am your girl!!!!!!
Have a 3/4 ton Chevy truck and sometimes got stuck when a 4X4 road ended and it always hit the back bumper in a wash out. The truck has 450,000 km now and is now my work truck. No matter what you drive as long as it gets you to where the fish/game are then you got er beat... Love the Backroads Map-it's like a Bible to me.

| off roading Posted: 12/19/2006 6:54:49 PM | go 4x4ing in a pick up you might spill your latte in an SUV, and you wouldn't want to ruin the nice vinyl/pleather upholstery! SUV's are no good for anything except for rolling over on the highway, and driving soccer moms to and from the games and mall | |
|
| off roading Posted: 12/19/2006 7:38:21 PM | meh, ride a Quad...off road, on road, beside the road.. those Quads like to be ridden.... | |

| off roading Posted: 12/23/2006 9:36:52 AM | I wanna go off roading!!!! So much fun, too many laughs!!! We should all get outside a lot more! | |
|
| off roading Posted: 12/23/2006 7:18:09 PM | SUV vs PU? many SUV's are built on truck chassis and have the same drive line. My biggest beef with newer trucks is that they have turned into SUV's.
The Short box gives me no payload. Romantic options are better with a PU, tailgates are nice for the quality time.

| off roading Posted: 10/4/2008 10:01:22 PM | | It has been scientifically proven that the earth goes through hot and cold cycles. I mean we have all heard of an ice age. The melting of the poles could be the fact that we are on the tail end of one of these cold times and the earth is returning to a warmer state. I do agree that people should pollute as little as possible but that is not going to stop me from driving to work. I would take the bus but since I need to be at work at 6am and the busses dont run that early it isnt a possibility. Also since ICBC is charging me 300 a month for my insurance (and that is with a 35% discount!... damn ripoff) I dont really care to spend another 150 on a bus pass as well. | |

| off roading Posted: 10/5/2008 10:54:26 PM | The main hwy. and rds. here are so lousy, you never have to go off road to go off roading.
Pot holes, broken shoulders, dips, frost upheavals, stupid roundabouts, jutting traffic calmers that force you into oncoming lane and speed bumps make for fun driving.
|
| off roading Posted: 1/24/2009 4:27:46 PM | Ive never wheeled a pick-up, been been wheeling with guys that do, Ive got a toyota 4Runner, and they seem to do pretty well, its taken my places that some in P-Us where scared to go, lol
I think with the right suspension set up either will do very well.

...i can't understand the mentality. That's because you're a city slicker. Stay where you are, have a latte and try not to think of non-city type activities, it'll do you good.
For me, trucks are the way to go. Mainly because I like to carry stuff like my camper, quads, or sleds. That said, my 1979 Toyota Landcruiser was the best 4X4 I ever had. That little diesel would pull and pull all day long.
|
| off roading Posted: 1/27/2009 1:20:51 PM | I'd say I'd take a horse for off roading, no matter what y'all drive with your stinking and polluting wonder machines you ain't gonna make it to where I can go | |

mid to late 80's toyota 4runner tough as nails and bullet proof 22r or 22re motor, watch for rust on the rear portion of the frame , the greatest thing is that the rear portion of the roof comes off! yehawww must get a manual 5spd(its a slug in a automatic) stay away from the v6.
get a good big bore atv , put some nice 30" boots on it and hold on!
