| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/1/2008 6:00:02 AM | If you play tennis or basketball, no matter for how short of a duration, or how poorly, you are still taking part in a sport.
So, all of us can put on our profiles that we play sports daily. When asked, just say "I made a few left turns today"

| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/2/2008 6:31:22 PM | You mean we all don't drive at speeds of 170+ miles on roads without lines with 42 others cars on the way to work? I'm shattered. It's just a few left turns<<<< | |
|
| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/2/2008 7:00:15 PM | Sure mage....
When people go play tennis , they aren't returning a 140 mph serve either. But nobody denies they are taking part in a sport.
So, when you make some left turns in your car, the logic would say you are also taking part in a sport, just at a lower level, right..:). Actually it could be more difficult as you are driving with many poor and unexperienced drivers on cell phones, drunk drivers, drinking coffee, shaving, etc.
But lets examine how these Nascar athletes become the best...Through beating out millions of others? No... Through exhibiting skill that few people on earth can match? no...
Usually their fathers raced and got their sons into it, lol.. Andretti family, Earnhardt, Wallace, etc etc.. That just tells me just about anyone could do it, if their father got them behind the wheel and trained them. That is NOT how it works in real sports.
If you want to be the best soccer player in the world, it makes no difference if your father was good, as you are competing against hundreds of millions of other people that also play and have the same opportunity. You can really see who is the best.
I have no doubt millions can drive as good as one of the Andrettis if they were trained similarly. Hundreds of millions play soccer, but none of them are as good as the best. Thats why the best are so appreciated.
The best Nascar driver? lol Who did they beat out? A couple hundred other drivers in other forms of racing? Did they win because their sponsors have the most money? Was their car better?

setting up the car. the Aerodynamics. The drivers that show the most promise in a bad car get promoted to good teams with better cars.
Go and talk to Michael Shumacher, see if hes not an athlete.

| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/3/2008 7:52:14 AM | | In my opinion Nascar isn't a sport or atleast not a typical one. A sport is an activity that requires skill, athletic ability and usually is competitive. Nascar fits these except for athletic ability. Skill is needed for racing a car, but you don't have to be an athlete, the car is doing the moving. Another "sport" that isn't really a sport is golf. I would say it's a game. I'm speaking objectively because I play golf well and am NO athlete. | |

Posted: 3/3/2008 12:45:55 PM | bohnbones1- come up to Lowes Motor Speedway in Concord NC and try the Richard Petty driving school, and ask them to let you take the car up to 150 plus mph, ALONE. See how well you keep it on the track, then ask them to put at least 5 other drivers around you, some experienced, some not, and see how you fare. Then imagine 40 cars on there at the same time. Do it with limited vision, the way the real drivers do, relying on what your crew "sees" for you.
We get it, snotty, you hate NASCAR. You're another one of those snobbish, supercilious, obnoxious, egocentric, vain "psuedo" Europeans though- your profile says your parents are IMMIGRANTS. So if you are now here, and perhaps born here, (I see by other posts you grew up in Ohio) why do you refer to yourself as "European"? Do you think that makes you better than us? Sweetcheeks, unless you are only Native American, ALL of us are from somewhere else, most of us are of European decent. We choose not to yammer on about that though. Of course, since you are identifying NOT as an American, but as a European, nothing we have will ever suit you. Feel free to return to whatever staid, boring old politically liberal country you or your parents are from. I think I smell "french" from over here. That would explain a lot if you are- everyone knows many French are a*sholes who criticize everything. That's why no one can stand most of them.
Don't let the plane door hit your a*s on the way off!

| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/3/2008 4:15:30 PM | Amber eyes, your funny...But your analogies are very weak..
People who are excellent at a sport, do it everyday for 10 - 20 years, many times several times a day. Those who excel, are better than the other millions that also play that sport as much..
No, the first time I would drive on the track it would be tough, of course. But, you would have to be mentally and physically impaired if you did it every day, twice a day , for 3- 6 months and still couldn't get the hang of it.
I probably could not fly an airplane well on my first try either, but I don't think that makes it a sport. :)
I don't hate Nascar. If I am bored, I would watch it. I went to a few races too.
I just don't understand how some worship certain drivers, as if they are some uniquely amazing human beings because their dad got them into it. It's a "sport" nobody else can partake in I suppose. They aren't anymore talented than the average Joe. Train the average Joe for a year or 2, and then you can worship him when he drives around in circles. How do you know they are doing something better than others can, when nobody else does it, lol.

| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/3/2008 4:38:34 PM | Its similar to this...
Imagine if f-14 tomcats were racing each other..It was called Nasjet.
Yes, it can be entertaining.
It is not easy to do. (They definitely must pass much more rigorous physicals to even sit in one of those planes than a guy sitting in Nascar.)
But obviously, it is not something open to anyone else, and not something anyone else can partake in. So you see the same 20 pilots flying each other every weekend.
This might not even be a good example, as it takes 100 times more skill than nascar. And it is 100 times harder to even get the opportunity, and not any Joe can even have the general body and mind strong enough.
But anyway, this would not be a sport. It would be a form of entertainment that a select few have the opportunity to take part in while millions watch and cheer for their favorite pilot.

| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/3/2008 5:48:19 PM | | bonehead your a real ***hole and don't have a clue what your talking about at all, there are millions of race car drivers out there racing and only the best make to NASCAR and fewer make to the Cup level and there's only a few father & son's that both made it to NASCAR compared to all the drivers that have made it and they had to earn it on the track .It's easy to see your only here to piss us off who enjoy all types of racing even airplane racing have you watched it's great. Alot of drivers got thier start at 5 or 6 years of age and race anything anytime they can and don't forget about all the testing the teams & drivers do during the week , testing is not fun but needs to be done . If you think it's easy to do build youself a street stock for your local track and go give it a try , it will change your mind in one feature race if you make your way it to one that is. If racing is not a sport what is ??? any other so called sport I have seen they only play 2 teams at once where is the fun in that they must not have enough balls to do that . Your not going to piss me off I know your a big ***hole that dosen't know anything I put up with bigger ones when I raced so I can tell you it's a sport if you don't understand build your self that street stock and find out if you have the BALLS to do so . Real men go racing little boys go play games. | |

So now being a mechanic is a sport too? ok....
Sport defined in Merriam Webster dictionary..
(1): physical activity engaged in for pleasure
So, if I drive my car in the summer with no AC, and the windows rolled up (so I am exerting myself physically and taking pleasure in it), and then making left turns, I am then playing a sport..

| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/3/2008 8:01:02 PM | Yeah at the end of the day Nascar is a sport because it is a professional competetion that makes use of some serious physics.
The factor that has always turned me off about Nascar is the fact that the quality of the car as well as the team and engineers behind them are such a huge factor in determining succuss that it is hard for me to get into. Sometimes I don't feel like some guys who win are nessisarily the best driver but they have the the best car on that particualr day and have the best and most experinced team coordinating the race strategy and the teams never really get the credit and glory that the drivers do when they are just as much resposible for victories.
Don't get me wrong, Driving at those speeds tightly bunched together is not nearly as easy at is looks on TV and all of those drivers are really skilled but unlike Motorcycle racing which is what I have always favored over car racing, the driver's skill simply is not as important as the car and the way the car is setup. In Motorcycle racing a more skilled rider on one of the slowest bikes can still win races and in 2004 and 2005 Valentino Rossi rode for Yamaha who had one of the least developed Motogp Bikes and was down 20-30 HP on the Honda and Ducati's which is a TON on a 300 pound Motorbike that goes over 200MPH and yet because of his superior skill he eaisily won the championships those years.

France has a conservative government at the moment lol. They have over 2000 years of culture.

| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/4/2008 6:10:19 PM | well they do have the engine builders compete against each other for the engine builder of the year ,and the crews compete for the best pit crew . Try going to your local short track roll up your windows turn your heat on all the way put your foot to the floor and drive that way for a few hours and you might get the idea of how hard it is and try to rember doing that with 40 cars around you .
physical activity engaged in for pleasure , you just described way racing is a sport

| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/4/2008 6:14:56 PM | | I agree EH1 the rider of a motocycle has more to do with how fast that bike can go than a driver can make that car go . That was amassing what Rossi did with Yamaha | |

| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/7/2008 4:38:41 PM | It takes a lot of talent, focus and physical conditioning to drive a racecar over an average of 170 mph for 400 miles. Add that to the fact of competing against 42 other drivers shooting for the lead. I've read some responses that all NASCAR is, is someone driving a car and turning left. Most feeble minds would think that and wouldn't consider all the R&D, strategy, and overall time it takes to make a NASCAR race possible. I would say a lot more than lets say, a session of Golfing. Is Golfing a sport? Its too easy, it can't be - let's see, hit the ball, walk up to it, hit the ball again. I've only played golf once and it's so easy to figure it out. I beat everyone that had 10+years experience. I even parred a hole. For that reason, Golfing can't be a sport. Just as easy as hopping into a racecar, driving it over 170 mph and turning left? Golfing doesn't even come close to NASCAR. | |

| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/8/2008 6:12:28 AM | In the Nascar truck series there is a woman who earned $450,000 in career earnings driving. She also has multiple sclerosis. Then there is Danika Patrick and others.. Then there are 50-60 year old men winning.
In my opinion, if a woman can compete with men at the highest level in a sport, it is not a sport.
I don't care for golf, but women cannot compete with the top men in the world. They will never place in the top 5 or 10 in any male top event, if they could ever even make the cut to be in the event. And if you played golf one time and beat people who have been playing for 10 years you should take it up and go professional as you are a natural.
Name a bonafide sport in which a woman with multiple sclerosis can even be in the same competition with men at the highest level. Soccer? Tennis? Basketball? Football? Soccer? Track? Swimming? Baseball? Hockey?

| Do you think Nascar can be considered a Sport? Posted: 3/8/2008 7:22:28 AM | Here, maybe this woman doesn't have MS, but in 1973 Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in three straight sets after he challenged her to a match where he boasted of his "superior male attributes".
In my opinion, if a woman can compete with men at the highest level in a sport, it is not a sport. So, by your opinion, then Tennis must not be a sport. I never heard of the woman with MS being in NASCAR truck series, so it must have been short lived, like many women who have driven in NASCAR series. Just because someone is diagnosed with MS doesn't mean they can't entirely function physically. In fact, I once dated a woman who had MS and I was surprized when she admitted to it, because she was healthier than most women I have dated.

Bobby Riggs was 55 years old when they played their exhibition match.
I said, it should not be considered a sport when women can beat men at the TOP level.. The one thousandth ranked man would destroy Serena Williams.. Women would never be able to be good enough to enter a mens draw in any professional tennis tournament.
Kelly "Girl" Sutton (born September 24, 1971, in Crownsville, Maryland is a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver. She has run the most races by a female in Truck series history and drove the #02 Chevrolet Silverado owned by her father, Ed Sutton. She is the only racer, male or female, known to race with Multiple Sclerosis.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Kelly Sutton and Erin Crocker will push the Craftsman Truck Series to a very special century mark this week.
Friday's John Deere 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, in which both will participate, marks the 100th time -- and 55th consecutive race -- in which one or more female drivers have competed.
Only one other series has had greater female participation. The Busch Series has logged 237 races with a female driver in its 24-plus seasons of 737 races.
Sutton, who'll start her 42nd event, is in her third full season with the series. Her October 2003 start at Phoenix International Raceway marked the beginning of the series' current, 54-race female driver streak.

There is competition, its not a parade lap or exhibition.
