The only thing I got out of it is that you will come up with just about any excuse to discredit nascar as a sport.

you have your stance. i have mine. we both have reasons for our respective stances. it is called a debate. given the nature of the original question, id say a debate is quite appropriate.

Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), a potential candidate for the 2008 presidential election, visited with the media Saturday afternoon before giving the command for drivers to start their engines.

McCain was outspoken about the steroid problem in Major League Baseball, so an Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reporter jokingly asked the senator if he would consider legislation to curb rough driving in NASCAR.

"This is a wonderful sport," McCain said. "I'd hate to see Congress screw it up."

see.... even Senator McCain says that Nascar is a sport

i never said that. i said that the initial question prompted a debate.

your original question is simple to answer. 'Do you think NASCAR can be considered a sport?' the first step in answering this question is to define what a sport is. dictionary.com defines a sport as a 'Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.' is NASCAR a physical activity? yes. is NASCAR governed by a set of rules or customs? yes. is NASCAR often engaged in competitively? yes. therefore NASCAR is a sport by definition. now your side of the argument is 'provin.' personally, i think the official definition is too vague. hence, i reformulated the definition to arrive at my own. mine is bold and has no official validity, but then again neither does an argument like

.

im puzzled, though, as to why you would even ask the question if you were so certain of the answer. ..

If poker, golf , hunting, fishing, and curling are sports, so is NASCAR......

I wasn't going 180, and did not wear a flame retardant suit, but I can tell you I wasn't feeling very 'sporty' during or after my 12 hour non-stop drive through Texas without a pit crew.....

Seriously, the only 'motor' sports I would consider 'sports' at all would be the cross-country events, like the Paris-Dakar Safari Rally.
Where how fast you go isn't nearly as important as whether or not you aggaravate that 2-ton Rhino over there, who can easily turn your several million dollar 'stock' car into a trash heap within minutes......
Where a broken axle is NOT your biggest problem if it happens in the middle of a very large, very waterless, very hot and hostile desert......

Now im not being biased, but Nascar is not a sport

Its entertainment, much like Wrestling, Poker, etc Not sports but more Entertainment

As far as getting paid to be on the bench/sidelines is complete BS

Coaches can stop paying players, and you think Nascar is a team sport and everyone is actively involved? No, "O h gentlemen start our engines" Wow $1 Mil for saying a sentence or $500 grand for changing a tire in 4-5 secs when it only takes 4 ppl to do, wow, patheic

That makes absolutly no sense.
Not a team sport? First you have the car builders that have to build a great car. Everything has to be right and if its not, they have to fix it.
Engine builders have to make as much power as they can and still stay with in the rules.
Pit crews have to practice all week on how to fuel the car, change tires, make changes to the car, repairs, etc in as little time as posible. A good pit stop can mean the difference between winning and losing.
Dont think for a second that these guys cant be cut at anytime if they dont pull their wieght for the team. They have coaches too.
These guys work injured and when they are sick and give 100 % all the time.
Then you got the spotters never taking their eyes off the cars and watching out for their drivers.
The best drivers in the world cant win with a piece of junk, and the best car cant win with out a good driver and pit crew.
Wrestling is entertainment where the matches are fixed, poker is a game.
Auto racing is more competitive than any other sport out there.

#59^^^that is the most retarded post on this thread I have ever seen. what do you mean in reference to paying someone a large sum of money just to say "gentleman start your engines"
That has nothing even to do with the race , and 4 guys to change a tire in 4-5 seconds?..that statement alone proves to me than you know less than nothing about any form of racing. How long does it take you to change a tire? an hour...how pathetic, or do you call a friend to do it for you? how pathetic again.
Go back to doing laps on your merry-go round in your pic, I think you should also wear a helmet just in case you get bucked off.

How, exactly, do changing tires, pumping gas (albeit really fast...), 'car-spotting' and engine building make you an athlete?

How does standing in an outfield waiting for a ball that may or may not come your way make you an athlete?
Watch a race one day and pay attention to the pit stops. 11 gallons of gas on the gas mans shoulder = 110 lbs and have to get two of those tanks in. Running with while carrying the tires or the jack. Taking 5 lug nuts off each tire and back on again all this while making changes to the car in under 15 seconds. If you are not in shape, you cant do it. Thats why they train all week and all year to get it right.
Spotters have a huge responsibility and need alot of mental consentration. No not phyical but one missed call can mean the drivers life. Look at Paul Dana`s (indy) crash a couple of months ago. I dont know exactly what happened but I think the spotter fell asleep on that one and now the man is dead.
Now as far as the car building and engine building, I was more refering it to be a team sport. If all that does not come together, you wont win a race.

if you'd take a few inches of stagger out of that pony you'd stop going in circles... and you don't play in any sports where there is a risk of serious injury? Football? huh...continue with your laps. how intelligent is it to purposely run into someone as hard as possible even if you are wearring equipment.

I can understand your unreasonable anger towards those that get to race cars as a way of life since you don't enjoy the freedom yourself of driving.

Hmmmm lets see, Running into someone and getting paid Millions of dollars abotu 4x mroe then someone who drives 500 laps and gets paid maybe 1-2 million even if they are a top driver.

Plus the only actual involvement you see, is agruing voer who "bumped his rear end" sounds kind of gay to me

lol , ok thats like saying if Dale Earnhart Jr started playing Poker, would you then consider it to be a sport? After all look at the comparisons

Nascar- Sitting on ur ass turning a steering wheel for 3-4 hours and makign stops for gas

Poker- Sitting on ur ass flipping cards for 3-4 hours and making stops for bathroom breaks

Nascar- 90% the tiem you take a chance by chosing to go the fianl 5 laps without chanign tires/refilling gas

Poker- 90% you will go all in and come out with all or nothing

etc etc

You're the same genius that on another thread said that there were more Canadians playing in the NFL than anyone else. This just goes to show you know absolutely nothing about 2 sports.

Like a previous post said, ask Joe Gibbs if Nascar is a sports and if its competitors are athletes, and I guess while your at it you can ask him if he has more Americans or Canadians on the Redskins this year.

Dont forget about Terry Bradshaw.
Then Tom Hammond and Larry Nance. 2 Basket ball players that took up drag racing.
When Nance first started out running a pro modified camaro, he was not allowed to drive. He was too tall for the car and had to move the seat back so far IHRA thought it was too much of a wieght atvantage. He had to hire a driver untill he changed classes and was allowed to drive.
