If there's one in Nanaimo I'd like to go. Assuming the start point is in Harewood or Downtown... It'd suck to bike out to the north end to go on a bike trip (although prior to 2002 That'd have been no problem for me).

Hey PlainJane why not get one started for the Island. We have the Goose so don't even have to come up with much in the way of a route. Can include lunch somewhere along the way perhaps. I would totally be up for one, although my weekends are going to be workfilled until June.

me organize one? gulp. I was working myself up to going to my first POF event ....

But I guess it couldn't be all that hard. Pick a date, say one of the May long weekend days, and a general starting point and see if there's enough interest to plot a route.

See plainjane, that is half the battle. I say lets do it nike, I can do the May long weekend Monday. So if that day works for a date, then just choose a ride. How far/long does one want to go. Start from and finish at?? The Galloping Goose goes everywhere......decide if a picnic or detination pub/restaurant is in order.

What would be great is to actually get a ride going for mainland and island folks alike. This martini chocolate run is sounding pretty tasty!!

I believe cycling on Galiano Island is awesome?

The island peeps and the mainland peeps can all catch ferries and meet in the middle?

Sometime mid-summer?

Galiano is a great idea as I've heard the same thing about Galiano (or was it Saturna). Anyway, it would be neat to explore one of the smaller Islands.

And I think a Pub destination would be a great idea, any pubs on Galiano?

I am with you on the Galiano idea for mid summer.

I am also supportive of something local for the May long weekend, after all, we have to get primed don't we???

Another great place to ride is Barnston Island. It's just off Hwy 1 at the 104th exit. Park at the Fraser River and take the little barge ferry over. There's a little park at one end with pit toilets and picnic tables. The ring road is flatter than a pancake, no traffic to speak of and it's a 10K circuit. Easy riding, bucolic farm country and a place to picnic.

The problem with Stanley Park in the summer is the insane volume of tourists. I ride the park in the mornings before everybody is awake. I give up in the summer or ride the road. I hate humping up to Prospect Point though.

Another really nice ride is the dikes from the Aloutte River heading out to Pitt Lake. The full round trip is 40K but there's a nice circle route on the dikes with a bit of road riding that is I think about 17km. There are picnic facilities at the river and a port-a-potty.

I'd recommend Barnston as the best facility for a group ride.

If I dont land a job with that summer camp *knocks on wood*, I'll be biking whenever I'm not struggling to find work elsewhere.

...bucolic..means stinky it's all farms on Barnston Island so it has a certain aroma at times depending on the farming activities. It is a wonderful place though, you can't hear the traffic. I live downtown in the constant hum of tires on the pavement, honking horns, shrinking sirens, it's a cacaphony of sound . I like to hear silence. After the POF gathering last night, all I hear is ringing in my ears. I spent $7.99 for a pair of ear plugs to protect my hearing but gawd did I have a blasting good time.

Anywho...I'll put together a Barnston ride if people are interested. Would a Sunday be the preferred day? Start at say noonish?

Remember -- no alcohol in public parks or on public lands. And wearing a helmet is the law, besides, it's good for your head if it goes bouncing.

I've got no problem with having kids along. Barnston Island is a safe place to go riding with your kids. It's all private land except for the roadway and the park at one end.

Games might be a little bit more difficult. The park doesn't have a lot of flat space for anything like that. It's quite small - 3 picnic tables. If you wanted to do something more along the lines of an organized picnic with sack races and the like then Garry Point Park in Richmond or one of the other larger parks would be the better choice.

S

I'd love to go on a group ride around stanley park sometime. We could all meet up somewhere, then ride to lumbermans arch for overpriced greasy fish&chips
I just finished off building up my new bike, and I plan on taking it around there regardless, once the weather gets a WEE bit warmer, (more eye-candy to distract me while trying to ride in as straight of a line as possible).

I am pretty sure there are several members who would be interested in doing a cycle, especially Stanley Park.

Woot, woot. Great idea!

A bike ride around Stanley Park sounds like a fantastic idea. I know a couple of us were discussing that last year and didn't get around to hosting.

Post it Kev!

When the weather gets better, a bunch of us can meet up at Science World and either ride around to Stanley Park for fish&chips, or down the other way to the Jericho Beach sailing club for some drinks and nacho's.
Once it warms up, I'm sure more people would be game to go for a ride. There's probably only a handful of crazies like me who'd ride the seawall while there's still snow on the ground.
Besides, I dont think that the fish&chips stands along the seawall are open just yet:p\
We'll just head the other way and lock our bikes up outside the Jericho Sailing Club!!!

If any one wants to hook up in the Pearl City for a bike ride let me know.

I've been getting out for a ride most days. So far most of my rides have been within city limits, which is a good work-out considering the hills we have to negotiate.

I am hoping to get out to Inland Lake one of these days when time permits. Could be fun to have a group outing there.
