How much do you tip the pizza delivery guy?

I think it depends on whether he's about to star in a porn flick or not.

Standard tip is 15% percent for decent service, 20% for really good, just like in any restaurant.

Silverseven, I think what she is trying to say is that when you get a pizza delivered, it already usually has about 10% for a delivery charge tacked onto the bill. I know that some of this money goes to the driver, so what the OP is trying to figure out is, how much more over that the tip that is already included in the price should she give them?

It's hard to say what 15% of the cost of the order is when there is already money tacked on to the original order for the driver.

As for the original question, I think you did fine. I usually tip between 3 and 4 dollars each time.

That "delivery fee" (around here, it's been about $1.50, I wouldn't be shocked if it doubled) is a charge over and above the price of the pizza, and barely covers the delivery guy's wages, let alone his gas expense. If the delivery guys can't make enough from tips, the restaurant has to increase the base pay to attract drivers, which means they have to pay more for taxes and insurance (wage costs are roughly twice the gross pay- someone making $7.00 an hour actually costs the employer around $14.00 per hour). Taxes and insurance are based on W2 wages, not tips, and the extra wages and taxes would be added to the cost of making the pizza- basically, if the restaurant has to pay drivers more because of meager tips, the customer gets stuck paying more for taxes and insurance, due to the higher prices that would have to be charged for pizza.

Tips go directly to employees. Wages are taxed.

Sure, if you don't mind paying more taxes, be a tightwad- and don't tip.
