| Is it wrong for a Lady to be offended when called WOMAN? Posted: 10/3/2007 5:01:46 PM | OP, What dictionary have you been reading where "woman" reads someone who is there to fetch beer????????????? Certainly not Oxford and/or Webster who, were they alive, would be scratching their heads much like I am. The word "Lady" has taken on a few incarnations in the English vernacular: Lady: the wife of a Lord Lady of the Evening: A prostitute
And when, in your example of talking about males does boy, MAN, guy, or DAWG for that matter equal "woman"??????? You sound seriously delusional and WAAAAAY too hung up on what you think is a negative label.
Recalling my years working in the banking industry, I had many elderly people call me "Dear" which other women also took GREAT offence to. I would rather be called " Dear" than a**hole. It is all about the context. Learn to recognize it. Not everyone is out to get you. WD

FYI: LoneStarFish has left the building.
So why are you still talking to her?
Is the revival of this thread the result of all the encouragement to search for redundant topics before posting a new one? I'd sure rather see a new thread that might bring up an old subject than wade through pages of comments a year or more old to get to the recent remarks.

| Is it wrong for a Lady to be offended when called WOMAN? Posted: 10/3/2007 5:41:59 PM | | This has to be by far, the far most grasp at stupidity I've seen on all of these fourm's. To consider being called a woamn as degrading is the stupidest thing I think I have ever heard , A woman is a female human. The term woman (irregular plural: women) usually is used for an adult, with the term girl being the usual term for a female child or adolescent. However, the term woman is also sometimes used to identify a female human, regardless of age, as in phrases such as "Women's rights". So Im guessing you thing the Barry Manilow song , "When a Man loves a Woman " is degrading to women ? I will tell you what I think . I think the men you hang around with either speak in some kind of broken ebonics, in wich case the term "woman" may be used in a derogatory form. | |

I was recently berated for addressing a group of ladies of my community association with: "Hi Ladies; how are you; fine I hope :)!". The immediate response or retort by one was: "I resent that remark, I am a woman, We are women, not 'ladies'; your comments are very derogatory of women!". Need I suggest that in such an environment, henceforth I simply say: "Hello." However, to me, lady-like qualities are very commendable! I've observed many women exemplify them wonderfully ... including with - wisdom, grace, strength, perseverance, compassion, zeal, courtesy, nurturing qualities, empathy, and equality!

THAT BEING SAID, YOU ARE SOME KIND OF NUT TO EVEN POST THE QUESTION, LET ALONE EXPECT AN ANSWER

I Do not call a gentleman by the name of "boy, MAN, guy, or DAWG for that matter"
A woman is a female that is just there in her everyday life style with her man telling her to fetch him a beer.
Did anyone else catch that?

being called a woman is not a DEROGATORY! TERM!
but there's a world of difference between "You are a woman" and "Hey Woman" and in the latter the tone of voice, accompanying body language and the situation will make all the difference. Personally [as a male] I think the term is offensive just as "the wife" and similar.

| Is it wrong for a Lady to be offended when called WOMAN? Posted: 10/3/2007 7:22:41 PM | | I have never posted before but this one caught my attention. An adult female is a woman no question about it. However, that will never make her a lady. A lady is how a woman acts, how she carries herself, how she talks, and if she lives by values those make a lady. Not an abundance of estrogen in your body and a specific set of chromosomes. | |

I have a 2 Bachelor degrees , one in women studies and the other in Political Science. I have learned all about political correctness and woman is the appropriate term to use in American culture at this moment! In women Studies they consider lady or girl to be demeaning terms or pet names ! I have been called worse things than woman, girl, or lady in my life time! People call me a girl when I know I am a grown woman but I do not take offense to it because I figure they are old school and they may not know a lot about political correctness. Whenever writing papers or taking essay tests at the University we must use woman for anyone female who is age 12 or older or we will be marked down a letter grade! The same goes for a man who is 12 years old or older, we can not call males by their slang terms of guy, boy, or dude when we are writing for the University.

You are a woman if you are a sexually mature female Lady is a way of life if must be earned, don't expect it to be assumed that you are one. Bingo.
Long locks I highly doubt if the OP really cares about politcally correct. Not that I care about being politcally correct either. However OP a persons tone can certinally make being called a lady derogatory sounding.
