Sorry, the bone loss problem has been known for years, you should be on a calcium suppliment the whole time your taking depo, and as for gaining weight, im sure you diet/exercise very regularly.

This is nowhere near like vioxx or others where they paid off the FDA to approve the drug even tho the study showed it was a bad drug.

as much as i loathe the pharmaceutical industry, the state our country is heading toward with frivilous lawsuits is much worse.

Btw, I know plenty of people on the shot that are perfectly normal. family members included, maybe i sould get them to jump in and sue too, its the american dream right?

I was on Depo for hmmm 6 years back pre 2000. One month off the shot I was pregnant and it's been 2 more kids and regular checkups with no probs since then

But to each their own, your personal body chemistry has alot to do with your reactions to drugs.

I was on Depo - was informed by my Doctor to take a calcium supplement while on Depo, and I did so. Was on it over 3 years, no weight gain, no side effects, NO PERIODS!!! Loved it. To each their own.

Okay Depo Provera has a bad rap. But lets be realistic here, surely it cannot be the cause of all the previous problems listed. If your on it for the treatment of Endometriosis and you get other problems it may not be the Depo. Women with Endometriosis are more likely to suffer various other under the autoimmune classifications. Allergies, Fybromalgia, Arthritis, Asthma, etc. Your health before you went on it plays a huge role. Family genetics and what diseases you are prone too play a huge role. I seriously doubt the poor girl who developed Osteoporisis (however its spelled) developed that at the age of 22 from DepoProvera. There could be lots of other reasons for that. Like smoking, malnutrition, not drinking enough milk when younger, eating disorders, pregnancy and insufficient vitamins while pregnant, other medication like steroids for breathing problems, etc. genetics etc. In the natural progression of life some people are unlucky and develop diseases.

I had a Doctor who might have made a huge mistake. I was on Depo Provera shots and not in the normal way. 150mg every 3 weeks. Eventually it got switched back to the normal dosage, but eventually I too went off it because of the side effects. I gained weight but the biggest problem was it made me moody and a tad bit psycho. Perhaps that is because I already had another problem that would be affected by Depo. It took a long time to get out of my system and I also had breast discharge for a couple of years. I had a bone density test as well, and there was a slight loss. Was it the Depo? Perhaps but it could also be family genetics and various other factors. I'm not a Doctor though, and maybe bone density loss can be reversed. Who knows.

Also some people are allergic to various birthcontrol. Perhaps I am one of them or perhaps I suffer side effects on all of them for another reason.

Again it is important to discuss these things with your Doctor/s. Doctors are humans to and can't always be Miracle Workers. If your Doctor doesn't listen get a new one. Not that thats easy.

I also seriously doubt Depo effects pregnancy. Yes if you are trying to get pregnant before its out of your system it might. Lots of women with Endo can still get pregnant.
So again if Depo Provera is so dangerous why is it still on the MARKET? Why isn't it banned?

Why isn't it banned?

Because everyone reacts differently to every drug and Depo is another drug, works great for some, not for others.

If they banned the drugs with side effects, we wouldn't have any drugs left.

Uh hello I was being sarcastic about the banning of Depo. If you read the previous paragraphs I wrote I kind of already answered that. Why are men on here anyways, I thought most don't want women on the pill-cause it makes them fatter? Lol more sarcasm. From now on I will have to write that after every SARCASTIC REMARK I type.

Well aware of that, I read your entire post. Figured I'd throw that in for someone who WILL come along and ask why it hasn't been banned. Got it? Good.

all i know, is that i ave known of TWO girls who managed to still get pregnant while on the shot. BOTH did not find out they were pregnant until they were in and around 4-5 months cause they started complaining about stomach problems etc only to have an ultrasound to reveal to theri asonishment that they were actually pregnant. Neither one had a choice to abort cause they were two far along, and one baby came out with a weird eye.

You also have to remmeber that both girls being under 21 at hte time, were also doing what regular 21 and under girls do....drinking and more then likely the odd drug indulging. And who is to say if years later the babies will be diagnosed with "something else" due to anything they were doing during the time that they were unaware that they were pregnant. THE PERIOD IS THERE FOR A REASON!

God forbid you practice safe sex.

You blame the shot cuz these girls didnt make their man use a condom/spermacide/pull out?

Personal responsibility has died a gruesome death.

umm BOTH were in long term relationships (started back in highschool) so you think that they knew theri partners well enough to trust then not to use a condem. Both girls were told that it was virtually IMPOSSIBLE for them to get pregnat while on it. I sadi that they got pregnant.....not that they were whoring themselves around the bar scene. (both men by the way have stuck and one couple has gottne married SO THERE)

OR IS IT COMMON FOR PEOPLE IN LONG TERM RELATIONSHIPS TO USE A BIRHT CONTROL AND A CONDOM? i think not. I find it amazing that a man is giving advice on something he knows absolutly NOTHING about. i also have a friend who is allergic to most condoms and she is not allowed to take birth control, she reacts to alot of stuff. Any wise ideas on what to use then romeo (again she is now into her 5th year wiht her boyfriend)

Its guys like you ^^^^ who are the ones more then likely to take off from teh girl if she got pregnant saying either "its not mine !" or "YOU SHOULD HVE USED BIRTH CONTROL". Even with teh best birth control out there, mistakes still happen. For example....did you know that new research has shown that 30 percent of women ovulate more then just ONCE in a month. It was found around 4 years ago that some women have up to three ovulations times (each time being fertile for 3-4 days at a time). This would mean that some women (me being one of them) are fertile for almost half the month.

How do i know this? Cause i have been pregnant twice. First time got pregnant my VERY FIRST TIME in hving sex, and it was 3 days BEFORE my period was due. Then got pregnant again 4 years later, only beiong off teh pill for 10 days, and was ab;e to concieve 2 days after my period was done. I have yet to get pregnant in that MIDDLE of the month time period that the family planning chart tells you you are fertile.

by the way, do to RELIGIOUS and health factors i am not on the pill anymore. Not being on birht control is MY choice. The day a man can have any say in a birth control issue is the day he takes a needle and sticks xtra hormones directly in his own arm (which by the way, if i had ever gone on the shot could have killed me since we found a tumor a month ago that is stimulated by even the smallest amounts of estrogen).

I am by far a happier women not on even the pill, and i find my pms sympoms such as crabbyness etc far smaller off then on as long a i excersise.

You're right, I didn't have a long term relationship with a girl that was on the shot the whole time. In fact I know nothing at all about how birth control works because I have a penis and couldn't possibly know anything about birth control.

Again, if you don't wanna get pregnant, use all available measures.

new guy...can i ask you a personal question (an no i do not want to make this a debate on abortion im just trying to prove that men do not have a say in birht control issues cause they don't do enough research on it.

but if you dont believe in abortion (im just assuming this cause you say they should take responsibilty for what they DID).......this means that almost all birth control Xcept the condom and spermacide should not be used in your relationships or you are a hipocryte.

This is because the pill/depo etc, has a third step to it. Not only does it make it harder for sperm to reach the egg by causing a thicker mucous and a substance that kills sperm......it actually causes a fertilized egg to not be able to attach toe the uterus. But according to people who are against abortion...... that would mean life had a chance and basically the pill just killed the fetus. THAT is why alot of religions are against it. Not because they dont want you to have sex (im actually pro choice ladies, to each thier own, but for myself i decided that if i couldn't abort a baby, i would be a hipocrite in my mind in taking the pill).

Again, you cannot have an opinion on it, until you have done the research on the subject.

To answer your question as easily as possible, I am pro-choice, I am against abortions, I am not a crazy fundie christian.

That should pretty much explain my stance on the issues at hand.

Also, I have never fathered a child (thank god), but, if I did, running away isn't an option.

A little disclaimer here--------------------

I love to argue, I love to play the devils advocate. You probably think I'm an A-hole and you're probably right. But, I would never want anyone to be hurt by prescription drugs, via bone loss or any other debilitating problem. Is Depo harsh, hell yes it is, anything that can make you skip periods is probably hell on the body. Would I personally take it if I was a woman, probably not.

CompleteK, sorry wasn't trying to pick a fight, I thought you were being sarcastic, Lol the disadvantage of the internet, taking things too personally. Anyways your picture wasn't up so I thought you were a guy trying to be a smart-ass, and due to someone close to me passing away I got a little crabby, cause it beats crying. Damn too bad I'm not still on Depo, then I could blame my crabbiness on that!

Took it one time 9 years ago, it immediately stopped my periods (was told at the time it would take up to a year of use for my periods to stop). I didn't renew the shot and when I got my period, it lasted for 12 weeks until I got another shot of hormones to "jumpstart" my body....anything that powerful just cannot be good for you!

I was on the depo-shot for 6 yrs...my problem with it was the weight gain...and the almost inability to lose weight while on it. No matter how hard I worked out at the gym, or how strict I was with what I ate... I was at a stand still.
There were a few plusses for it, but not enough to stay fat!

my sister was on it for 3 years, and when she went to the doctor to renew her prescription, he told her he would not give it to her cause of the problem it can cause with the bones.
so she stoped taking it

I have a friend that got the shot twice, she then got her period for almost 2 years straight. No matter what they did they couldn't get it to stop (other pills and an IUD) I got the shot three times but I had no sex drive and that kind of defeated the purpose for me, Why use a birth control if you don't ever want to have sex? After seeing what happened to my friend I would think twice about using it again.

Although I have never been on the "shot"(or the pill), I have had friends who have done both for extended periods of time.. What I do not understand is how someone could get pregnant while on the shot and not know about it until they are 4 or 5 months pregnant.. EVERY time my friend went in to get a shot they would do a pregnancy test before administering it... So, like I said, I just don't get it.. ANYways... I personally am not up for taking drugs that will affect my hormones....I just do not see how it could be good for you... Thats what condoms are for
