How would you define a MAN in todays world?????

soleil24's post said a lot about what I think a man is. To me, they're also confident not arrogant, assertive not aggressive, responsible, able to deal with the consequences of his decisions/choices, honest, reliable, considerate, family is important, and he's not afraid to stand up for himself or his loved ones. This goes for women, too. Also, having some class, instead of some trash, is appealing.

Being a man has many meanings.Its always being there, for the ones you love.No matter what.
Its teaching your son, not only how to defend himself.But that it's okay to cry as well.
Its making that phone call to a 12 year old boy. For your 11 year old daughter. Because she's to shy to ask him, to go to her frist school dance.
If necessary.it means working a 100 hours a week.So your kids will have it better, then you did.
Its being human enough.To let yourself cry. While watching a touching scene in a move.
It means sitting at your sons bedside all day and night.when he's ill.then going to work.
Its stoping on the road side and picking fresh flowers . For the woman you love.
It's also being able to put your own feelings aside. In order to do what is right.Not what is easy.
Last but not least. It's always putting yourself last !

Three little words.

The Golden Rule

A real man is not a know it all - he respects others - goes out of his way to make sure he causes others no grief - knows right from wrong and does his best to stay on the right side of things - is honest in his dealings business or personal.

AND - since this is a single’s site

A real man would never lie to a gal to get in her pants - no matter how bad he wants in there.

a *Gentleman* is everything YOU see,a man is simply Who and what he is,Just a man!

There is No man any more than another,as there is no more any woman as she see's herself,the only time one is better is in someone elses Eyes

My suggestion to this question is *find Your Lyrics to your song*

What a great thread and, if it's OK, I'd like to comment, as a woman.

To me, a man is many things:

1) He's someone I can look up to and respect, not because of what he has but what he stands for.
2) He's someone who knows instinctively when to stand in front or stand behind.
3) He's someone who can kick me in the butt (gently) when I need it with a smile on his face.
4) He's someone who accepts the responsibilities to provide and share without demanding anything in return.
5) He's someone who accepts me as I am, knowing full well he's not perfect either.
6) He's someone I can tell all my secrets to and not be judged. And,
7) He's someone who trusts me, as his best friend, to do the same.

You know it's a pretty good question, It certainly shows a bit of the personalities of the lads that answer it.

Everyone is different, but if you do the best you can do, try to conduct yourself in a manner that you and others can be proud of I think you're on the right track. Hold your morals and your ethics dear and sell out to no one, and you've taken the first steps.

As far as a man that I have emulated, My father was not a positive influence, if anything I learned by being what he wasn't. That's a sad thing, but it's the only way to make the best out of a bad situation. So my roll models were more from the movies and the TV. When you grow up thinking a man should be like John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, or Clint Eastwood. You really got to push yourself. You also set your standards so high for yourself that you never seem to be satisfied with what you accomplish.

A man is someone who does not measure himself by his wealth
or material possessions he holds.
He's measured by his strength,
and warmth, held within his heart and soul.

Deep inside is an understanding and affection
that draws you in
and keeps you safe.......
that is a man in today's world.

A man is a human being who has XY chromosomes. Beyond that, I prefer each individual to define themselves.

Here is a prose that I think gos for any man, or woman for that mater..... Oh And Grezz I think this guy was a liberal LOL
DESIDERATA

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
And remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly & clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull & ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud & aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain & bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing future of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity & disenchantment
it is perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness.
Beyond wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees & the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labours & aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

If I only read the posts from this year, and not 2006, I'm still left feeling kinda nauseous.

Way too much sugar can make you feel ill right?

This thread makes me think of moon light walks on the beach and all other phrases that only talk the talk.

Please.

I am thankful for those who posted Desiderata and IF - all men could benefit with reading these great philosophies - no matter how "sweet" some may think.

As with most men, I was influenced first by my father. But as I grew I began to realize his weaknesses - at least those that affected me. So I turned to stories - both true and fictional - for my inspiration to grow as a man. At the risk of everyone "rolling their eyes" - one of many heroes in my life has to be Jesus. I won't say anymore except: examine His life - not the rhetoric surrounding it. He led a life any man should be proud of.

Other heroes include Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Terry Fox - there are so many.

No man should try to emulate the heroes in their lives, but be a tapestry of all - be their own man.

A man in today's world is still a man. There are some definite changes in behavior from years ago, but they are still men.

If the men of today's world has changed for the worst, then I would say it's the women's fault with women's lib and such. Some women go too far and they won't let a gentleman be a real man. JMO
