I dont really care for Pittsburgh but I'm glad wings didnt win it again... gotta spread the glory if hockey is to get even more popular in north America. Nice revenge for the Pens but please, no more of either team in the final next year again.

kaos never count your eggs til the chicken lays them lol. 3-peat eh?

Stanley Cup Winner - Pittsburgh Penguins!

Pitt 2 Det 1

The good ol' fashioned jinx of presuming a team would win works everytime!

No one got the score but sunshine, ratherb, greyarea, passion, and riot collect 10 for the win.

Remember, 40 points for the correct team, another 40 for calling the correct number of games:

Congrats to hawaiianluau, greyarea, and sunshine for calling both and collecting 80 points!

Congrats to tropicalfish, fab14, ratherb, passion, and riot for calling the team and gain 40 points!

cincin, smitten, kaos, and donnydude do not collect.

2009 Playoff Predictions Hockey Pool Winner Is...
Posted: 6/12/2009 8:56:47 PM
No one got the bonus question correct - Malkin was the Conn Smythe winner.

So, here we have it...

riot13 regains her crown after surrendering it for 2 years! passion takes over 2nd, narrowly edging out kaos who was almost a shoo-in to win this year's contest.

The prize: A lifetime supply of octopi and a new emoticon, courtesy of cincin, of a woman in a purple octopi straight jacket!

The moral here: Always go with your heart!

riot: 302 points
passion/song: 275 points
kaos: 273 points
ratherbgolfing: 269 points
donnydude: 252 points
fab14: 239 points
sunshine: 215 points
cincin: 214 points
greyarea: 185 points
tropicalfish: 135 points
smitten: 117 points
hawaiianluau: 85 points
blueshirtbabe: 65 points
dirtydeeds: 40 points
ScotsIrish: 30 points
southpaw: 25 points
windsor: 20 points
dman: 15 points
korrosive: 2 points

Thanks to everyone for participating in this little hockey pool. It was a pleasure to run and gave me something to look forward to when things were not so great. I will now go into hockey withdrawals. The Hockey Awards are coming as per our usual tradition. Until we meet again next year...

Hockey Playoff Pool Awards 2009
Posted: 6/12/2009 10:09:32 PM
Staying true to our tradition started 4 years ago, I've compiled a list of awards to be given out to select individuals based on their performance this year. If you don't get an award, that's okay. There's always next year! If you DID get an award, and you didn't want that award, don't be offended or alarmed, remember, it's all in good fun!

Stanley Cup winner & Conn Smythe Trophy winner: riot13! (thank you, thank you...)
The top spot had eluded riot13 for the duration of the contest, always placing second whether it be to ratherb or to kaos. After an impressive first round, riot took a tumble after a rough second round, only to rebound in the third round and finally, take over top spot at the very end.

Rocket Richard Award (given to the player who accumulated the most points at the end of the season): riot13! (I'd like to thank....) There was no bonus questions (other than the very last one), no wagering, no gambling, and riot still ended up tops with 302 points!

Comeback Kid Award (given to the player who had to make up a lot of ground in order to get to where they ended up at the end of the season): riot13! (what, of course, this isn't rigged!). riot enjoyed a place at the top after the first round, placing 2nd to ratherb, only to fall from grace in the second round, ending up in 5th spot. Through consistent play and perseverance, riot scratched and clawed her way back up to 3rd behind kaos and donnydude, before landing in the top spot (finally) after Game #7 of the Stanley Cup final. Honorable Mention goes to donnydude, who had a string of good luck in the third round, propelling himself into 2nd spot but in the end, picked the wrong team to win.

High Rollers Awards (given to the player who accumulated the most points in the season without having to play that many games): greyarea! Imagine if greyarea actually started at the beginning with the rest of us and played individual games, we may be looking at a different winner! Garnering 185 points from finals play alone (with the odd series picks at the beginning), greyarea was almost never wrong, including predicting Pens in 7 for the final and collecting 80 massive points in the end to wind up in 9th place overall.

Steve Smith Award (given to the player with the biggest mistep, causing them to lose as a result of such mistep, like Steve Smith scoring on his own net in Game 7 of an Oilers/Flames series): ratherbgolfing! Having secured top spot after the first round, ratherb's "mistep" came after he got back from vacation and changed some of the predictions he had previously posted. The Game 3's were the turning point. He correctly picked the winning teams and scores for Car/Bos and Pitt/Wash but changed his picks and ended up getting 1 point instead of a possible 12! Same went for the Ana/Det game, collecting 1 point instead of a possible 6. After that, things just went downhill for poor ratherb and he was not able to make up ground. Honorable Mention goes to kaos, who most likely would've won this year had he picked the correct team to win the Stanley Cup!

Eric Lindros Award (given to the player who showed the most promise at the beginning of the season and thus had high expectations, only to lose steam towards the end): ratherbgolfing! After the first round, the player to fear was ratherb! Players did not want to go against him because he supposedly knew his stuff! Then, for some strange reason, he picked Chicago and Carolina to win in round 3, and things went downhill from there.

Murphy's Law Award (given to the player who just couldn't catch a break no matter how hard he/she tried): smitten! This was a tough one because there were quite a few players up for this award. smitten for some reason had the worst luck of all, simply not being able to catch a break, right from the beginning. Poor smitten finished with a mere 117 points, despite having started right at the beginning and playing almost all individual games. Honorable Mention goes to cincin, who like smitten, started at the very beginning playing almost all individual games, still could not rise up from the middle of the pack where all the series only players were.

Stuck In The Middle Award (given to the player who despite playing a lot of games, just couldn't break away from the pack): smitten! This award really does seem to go hand in hand with the Murphy's Law Award. With chiefs not around to defend his title(s) with these two awards, smitten collects both. smitten, if you remember, was an Honorable Mention for this award last year. This year, she collects! Again, cincin gets the Honorable Mention.

Joe Who Award (given to the player who placed the highest despite never getting any ice time): tropicalfish! Having won this award last year, it was tropicalfish again, who placed the highest by playing only series predictions and no individual games, but still ending up with 135 points.

Hat Trick Award (given to the player with the most points scored in a single game): donnydude! For the games posted May 17&18, donnydude collected 15 points each for correctly getting the winning team and score for the Det/Chi game (5-2 respectively) and Pitt/Car game (3-2 respectively) and collected 30 points for that single post. Now there was a player who did better with 3 correct scores in a post but as we all know (sorry ratherb), he changed his scores.

Half An Award (given to the player who just couldn't hold the top spot on his own and had to share it - this award is to be shared as well): no winner. This year was unlike any other year in that there was no duking it out for top spot. ratherb held the top spot before surrendering it to kaos, who had very little competition as he surged ahead of everyone. donnydude gave it a shot but kaos ran away with it until the very bitter end when riot and passion rose up and took the top spots.

Five For Fighting Award (given to the player(s) who instigates the worst on-ice fight - best scrap): no winner. With smack noticeably absent from this year's contest, the pool was unusually ... at peace. There was no fighting, bickering, name-calling - it almost didn't feel like hockey! Despite efforts from cincin to gets things going, no one would drop their gloves. Everyone collects on a Lady Byng.

Congrats to all winners and again, if you didn't win an award, don't feel bad. There's always next year.

Have a great summer everyone!

Thanks for doing another great job this year Riot, tracking all the points. I just couldn't get out of the middle and knew I would get the Murphy awards. I like to think next season, what No hockey at the moment, that my ability to pick teams will improve.

No more hockey, Hi my name is smitten, and I'm addicted to hockey. See everyone at the weekly meetings. Have fun Riot.

I still can't believe our loss here in hockey town!

As painful as it was, I did find myself happy for the Penns who earned every bit of it.

Had it not been for the Wings long road of experience I would have went with my original prediction of Penns in 6 with Malkin for the Conn Smythe. (What would my points total have been if I had went that road?) I thought all the playoff experience would be the edge that would keep the cup here.

Have a great summer everyone, it goes by all to quickly.

Thanks again Riot, and the offer still stands in Tampa anytime after Christmas.

LOL The Pens are the best club in the history of Hockey? Even being a B's fan, I still can't deny that the Canadiens have by far, been the best team in NHL history. Detroit has been very good in the last 10-15 years, but Montreal owned the NHL in the decades previous.
