| Hockey Playoff Predictions Posted: 4/9/2007 9:33:18 PM | | Hey Chiefs, nothing against the Leafs. It's just that I wanted the Isles to get in so Smyth can rub it in Kevin Lowes' face. I think the Oils pathetic excuse of a team after the trade though says it all. | |

| Hockey Playoff Predictions Posted: 4/9/2007 10:14:41 PM | Here we go! My predictions:
WEST:
1) Calgary over Detroit in 6. Detroit's choked when it mattered most. Bertuzzi? Come on!
2) Minnesota over Anaheim in 7. It's gonna be a coin flip but the Wild have surprised many.
3) Vancouver over Dallas in 6. Don't care for either team but there's high expectations for Luongo to show off what he can do in the playoffs.
4) San Jose over Nashville in 6. Tootoo? Cheechoo? All the same to me.
EAST:
1) New York Islanders over Buffalo in 6. People everywhere are most likely laughing at me here but I'm all for an upset, a HUGE upset!
2) Tampa over New Jersey in 7. Crappy goaltending aside, Tbay is my team and Lecavalier is my man! Rocket Richard baby!
3) Atlanta over New York Rangers in 6. Coin flip. Don't care for either all that much.
4) Pittsburgh over Ottawa in 7. Don't like the pompous Sens. The kids in Pittsburgh have got it going on and want to prove it!

| Hockey Playoff Predictions Posted: 4/10/2007 8:55:57 PM | Yeah I should havce added Calgary to my predictions list along with Ottawa. Jerome Iguilna has to step up and really get things going for his team. They came close three years ago, but if they want to make things happen here, they have to step up even further.
Also for Ottawa, Alfredson needs to get things going. It has to start with him and he needs to start the tempo for his team and just creat the momentum and the inspirational Swedish charm to have the other players to step up.
Buffalo in 7 Tampa in 6 NYR in 7 Ottawa in 7

| Hockey Playoff Predictions Posted: 4/10/2007 10:35:44 PM | Okay, everyone! Last chance to post your Round 1 predictions. Deadline is tomorrow (Wednesday, April 11) at 12pm if you want to take part in Round 1 predictions. Like Smack said, 5 points for correct winning team and 5 more for correct number of games. Of course, people can still join later and guess on individual games for single points. Correct team wins 1 point for individual games. Correct score on top of correct winning team earns 5 points. If you correctly guess OT along with correct score, one additional point (5+1). However, guessing OT when no OT will negate a correct score (for those who throw OT into every guess) - a new rule this time around to keep it fair. OK, so let's get those Round 1 predictions as well as tomorrow's game predictions.

| Congrats to Canadian Women's team Posted: 4/11/2007 2:49:41 PM | I just actually posted my predictions on my facebook so i'll copy and paste what I have down there.
1) Detroit vs Calgary. Prediction= Red Wings in 6.
This is a rematch of the 2004 Western Conference Semi-Finals in which the Flames knocked out the Red Wings. I don't see it happening this year. The Wings are going to do everything they can this year to avoid another first round defeat. Hasek is a playoff goalie and I don't see him letting up in the series. The Flames are a really bad road team and I see them losing them all on the road. Dion Phaneuf is still too inexperienced and will get burned by the Red Wings.
2) Anaheim vs 7) Minnesota. Prediction= Anaheim in 5
Easy series for the Ducks. Minnesota is going to try and buckle down defensively but Anaheim is going to exploit it. Everytime Minnesota tries something Neidermeyer and Pronger will shut them down. When the Wild try to shut down the Ducks, Anaheim's quick forwards are going to dump and chase and get the puck down low and create chances.
3) Dallas vs 6) Vancouver. Prediction= Stars in 7
Sorry Canuck fans. It's going to be close but the Canucks suffer yet another 7 game letdown. The reason Dallas will win is because the Canucks don't have enough offense. Also, Roberto Luongo is playing in his 1st postseason (not hard to believe because the Panthers suck) and the jitters will get to him the first couple of games. It's going to be the difference.
4) Nashville vs 5) San Jose. Prediction= Sharks in 6
Rematch of last year, and it's going to end pretty much the same way. Nashville struggled at the end of the season and San Jose only lost about 2 of their last 15 games. Joe Thornton really came alive after a slow start and finished only second to Sidney Crosby in scoring. Peter Forsberg has been inconsistent all season because of his foot injury. Will he even play every game in this series. The Sharks are hot and will advance into the next round.
Now the East
1) Buffalo vs 8) NY Islanders. Prediction: Buffalo in 5.
This one is pretty much going to be a slaughter. As much as I love Ryan Smyth (he is my favourite player) and as much as I want the Islanders to go far because of that, it's not going to happen. The Sabres are too strong, too quick and have way too much depth. There's not a lot I can say about this series. Dubewich (I know thats not right) is basically an unknown, and despite getting the Islanders into this spot, the Sabres are just going to light him up. The Islanders get lucky and win a game on home ice.
2) New Jersey vs 7) Tampa Bay. Prediction. Devils in 6.
This is going to be a good series. Tampa has the scoring punch up front with their big 3 of St.Louis, Lecavalier and Richards. They can certainly get pucks past Martin Brodeur. But it's Martin Brodeur. The guy is awesome. 12 shutouts this year. Brodeur might single handedly get the Devils to the Finals. With their boring style of defensive hockey, the Lightning are going to get frustrated, probably take a bunch of stupid penalties. Patrick Elias is another player to pay attention to. He's good in the playoffs.
3) Atlanta vs 6) New York Rangers. Prediction. Thrashers in 7.
I had a hard time with this one. The Rangers have been inconsistent this year and the Thrashers pretty much remained on top throughout the season, holding off a strong push from Tampa. I'm picking the Thrashers mainly because I just can't see the Rangers stepping up and taking any kind of stranglehold on the series. Jagr hasn't been very good in the playoffs for a long time now. Hossa and Kovalchuk are going to have a pretty good series, and Henrik Lundqvist is going to face a barrage of shots, putting Atlanta into the next round...but barely. I don't see this being a good series for either of the goalies.
4) Ottawa vs 5) Pittsburgh. Prediction. Penguins in 7.
This is going to be the best matchup of the first round and probably the one that gets the best ratings. The reason I like Pittsburgh here is that they got the right dynamic on their team. You got a 19 year old scoring leader who I don't even need to mention, you got a bunch of young talented forwards that can certainly ride behind Sid the Kid and then you got the wildcard. Gary Roberts. This guy is awesome in the playoffs and is going to be a force. Put him on a line with Sid and things are going to happen. The Senators would win this series if they had stronger goaltending. I'm just not sure Ray Emery can get them past the Pens. Don't even get me started on Marty Gerber. Can someone say Montreal? Can someone say Cam Ward. Ottawa would be stupid to even put him in.
There you have it. Enjoy. Discuss.

| Congrats to Canadian Women's team Posted: 4/11/2007 3:02:04 PM | | ^^Vancouver was ranked 3rd not 6...and i think they got it this time because of home advantage...and because of that little thing...wait let me re phrase that BIG thing called Roberto Luongo | |

| Congrats to Canadian Women's team Posted: 4/11/2007 9:52:11 PM | | OOOOOPS, forgot to make my predictions..... LOL.... But will say rangers in 6 over the thrashers since that series starts tommorow night....... | |

| Game #1 Results (So Far): Posted: 4/11/2007 10:48:15 PM | Here are the results from this first night of playoffs:
Ottawa 6 - Pittsburgh 3 San Jose 5 - Nashville 4 (2OT) Vancouver 4 - Dallas 4 (Game not over at time of this post) Anaheim 2 - Minnesota 1
Only 4 participants for today's games:
Leading the pack is Chiefs who correctly guessed the winner and score of the Ana/Minn game (1+5). However, OT was incorrectly called so 1 point is deducted. Also correctly guessed Ott to win. 6 points
Next is Forever14. Welcome to the game! Correctly guessed Ott & Ana to win. 2 points Oh, you predicted the Van/Dal game twice and missed the TBay/NJ game in your Game #1 predictions. Not too late to add your thoughts on that one.
Smack & Riot close out at 1 point apiece. Smack was so close in the Ott/Pitt score but one off for Ott. Also correctly guessed OT for Nash/SJ game but picked wrong team to win! Smack gets 1 point for Ott win and Riot gets 1 point for SJ win.
The results for the Van/Dal game will be included with tomorrow's games. If you haven't posted your guesses yet, you have until 12pm.
Calgary vs Detroit New York Rangers vs Atlanta Tampa Bay vs New Jersey New York Islanders vs Buffalo
Good luck! | |

| Congrats to Canadian Women's team Posted: 4/11/2007 11:03:08 PM | Good post Korrosive. Although I don't agree with everything you say, it's well thought out. I didn't have time to break down each series when I originally made my predictions but here's where we disagree.
Rangers vs Atlanta: While it's true that the Rangers struggled with inconsistency for the first 3/4 of the season, no team was better in the Eastern Conference since the trade deadline. The Rangers recorded 30 points since Feb. 27 - matched only by the Penguins. So the Rangers are coming into the playoffs playing their best hockey all season. The Thrashers, on the other hand, while winning their division, only posted 23 points over that same period. Furhtermore, the Rangers did the bulk of that without the services of one Brendan Shanahan, who sat out most of the stretch run with a concussion. I see him and Jagr as being the X factors in the series. They are the ones with all the playoff experience. Also, as much as it pains me to say it, the acquisition of Sean Avery has proven to be one of the best trades of the NHL season.
Anaheim/Minny: Yes, Anaheim won tonight, but I don't see this as an easy series. I see it going 6 or 7 and I have Minny picked as the winner. Every year it seems that there's a relatively unknown goaltender whose team rides his performance deep into the playoffs and, as I have said in another thread, I see Nik Backstrom as this year's Cam Ward. Just a gut feeling but he's been lights out ever since Fernandez went down with his knee injury.
We agree on the Calgary Detroit series, but maybe not for the same reasons. Again, as much as I hate to admit it, Dom Hasek will be the difference in this series. You did mention him in passing, but I see him as the main reason for a Detroit win. Remember, the last time he played in a playoff game, he was hoisting the Stanley Cup at the end of it. He's had an unbelievable year and would get my vote for Comeback Player of the Year, if I had a vote.
Dallas/Vancouver (in ot as I write this). I pick Vancouver flat out because Turco sucks in the playoffs. He'll let the Stars down again this year.
