Game 6
Posted: 6/4/2008 11:51:21 PM

Riot why do you wait till the last minute to post the bonus?

I post the bonus when I post the deadline - it's always been that way. Again, it really doesn't give anyone an advantage (or disadvantage) per se because it doesn't matter what score you pick. All you have to do is pick the correct winning team so everyone who picked Det to win tonight would've got the bonus had the score been UNDER 5 all together. The bonus should not affect the team you want to pick to win.

Needed a day to recouperate. OK, here are the results:

kaos was the only one to call the game and score but he didn't wager.

No bonus points for anyone because score was not UNDER 5 cumulative.

prairiep: 300 points
DonnyDude: 260 points
smitten: 60 points
kaos: bragging rights

On the flipside:
unohu: no harm, no foul

Congrats to passion/song!!!! A well-deserved win through consistent play, in regular season and playoffs (just like the Wings)! You are the winner of our 2008 Hockey Playoff Pool and as the winner of this year, your grand prize is......

FRAMED OCTOPI!!!!!!!

korrosive has passed on the torch (and makeshift crown) onto you and you must now wear this with pride. Take your octopi and make your way across the country.

prairiep, also a very good game to you. If passion/song is unable to fulfill his duties as our 2008 winner, you are next in line.

Another 3rd place finish for myself. I guess it could've been a lot worst!

Thanks to everyone who participated this year. It has been fun - even with the controversies.

Stay tuned for our annual Hockey Playoff Pool Awards!!!!!!

2008 Hockey Playoff Awards
Posted: 6/6/2008 2:34:38 AM
Staying true to our tradition started 3 years ago, I've compiled a list of awards to be given out to select individuals based on their performance this year. If you didn't get an award, that's okay. There's always next year! If you DID get an award, and you didn't want that award, don't be offended or alarmed, remember, it's all in good fun!

First and foremost, the Stanley Cup winner & Conn Smythe Trophy winner: passion/song! Only a rookie, passion/song played the game with a sense of consistency and urgency, when that was required. He had a strong regular season, almost always landing at or near the top, and maintained that consistent play throughout! Even when he was down, he never complained or ****ed about the rules. He won this fair and square and conducted himself in a sportmanslike manner throughout.

Rocket Richard Award (given to the player who accumulated the most points at the end of the season): passion/song! Ended the year with an amazing 1506 points! Again, goes to show that this format that we tried this year wasn't designed to benefit those near the bottom. passion/song was one of our top performers and proved that with the right strategy, he could maintain the top spot!

Comeback Kid Award (given to the player who had to make up a lot of ground in order to get to where they ended up at the end of the season): Riot13! Yes, yes, thank you much. Seriously, riot had a very bumpy start to the year, betting on ridiculous teams like Nashville and Colorado to beat Detroit. Stuck in the middle of the pack for most of the season, riot capitalized on 3 all-in bets in the final, which led to her 3rd place finish. Had smack not suggested this wagering system, poor riot would've faired a much worse fate, especially having picked Pittsburgh too, to beat Detroit. Honorable Mention goes to Smack! Also, destined for failure by picking all the wrong teams (only had one series winner correct in Round 1), smack made huge gains in the finals with risky wagers. Unfortunately, a bad break robbed smack of top spot and this award.

High Rollers Award (given to the player who accumulated the most points in the season without having to play that many games): tropicalfish! Does anyone really know anything about this guy? He peeks in only to give round predictions, gets a good number of them correct, then moves himself up the ladder without ever having played a single individual game! Ends up in 7th place with 75 points based on round play ALONE! Way to go!

Steve Smith Award (given to the player with the biggest mistep, causing them to lose as a result of such mistep, like Steve Smith scoring on his own net in Game 7 of an Oilers/Flames series): smack! One could argue that his biggest mistep was betting 670 all-in points on Detroit in Game 5 when as prairiep put it, he was almost uncatchable! However, he was just playing an honest game, seeing as he picked Detroit to win in 5. No, the bigger mistep came in Game 3, when prairiep raised the stakes and made a call without even picking a team to win! His bet put the pressure entirely back on smack and smack fell victim to his tactic. Not only did prairiep win based on smack's bet, he got the score correct too, thus taking away the "uncatchable" lead held by smack! Honorable Mention goes to chiefs. Both smack and chiefs really could not catch a break heading into the finals. Round 1 was not kind to either one of them. Chiefs exit was also a case of bad luck. Two bad wagers right off the bat took him out of the game. Then, the third game, he gets the team and score correct but with no points to bet!

Eric Lindros Award (given to the player who showed the most promise at the beginning of the season and thus had high expectations, only to lose steam towards the end): DonnyDude! This was a tough one. One could hardly say that a 4th place finish, especially not having played all the games, could be considered disappointing. However, he showed such promise in Round 1, virtually destroying the competition with 55 points in Round 1 play alone that many feared the day when he decided to join in on individual game play. The other rounds, however, weren't as kind and even though a 4th place finish is considered respectable, especially for a rookie, everyone expected him to be at or near the top!

Murphy's Law Award (given to the player who just couldn't catch a break no matter how hard he tried): chiefs! Only 2 correct teams picked in Round 1 and 0 in Round 3, chiefs struggled to get away from the middle of the pack. Even DonnyDude had him beat at one point without having played a single individual game! Bad luck followed chiefs around all year. Being one of the few people silly enough to pick Pittsburgh to beat Detroit, chiefs lost all his points in the first 2 games, only to get the 3rd game correct with correct score but with no points to wager or win! Lucky for chiefs though, no one came close to touching him for this award though!

Stuck In The Middle Award (given to the player who despite playing a lot of games, just couldn't break away from the pack): chiefs! This award really does seem to go hand in hand with the Murphy's Law Award. It just seemed like poor chiefy could not break away from the pack, until he made a move and it was in the wrong direction! An Honourable Mention goes to smitten, who had a taste of what it was like to be at the top but quickly fell into relative obscurity in the middle of the pack, unable to get back to the top.

Joe Who Award (given to the player who placed the highest despite never getting any ice time): tropicalfish! Again, 7th place finish and 75 points without having to play a single individual game? That's quite a feat! Honourable Mention goes to wizard, who got 40 points in Round 1 play ALONE and placed 11th!

Hat Trick Award (given to the player(s) with the most points scored in a single game): smack & smitten! Interestingly, this award has only gone to female players. It was first held by Smilnlady, then smitten, now smitten claims this victory again but has to share it with smack. Both players earned 12 points in a single game. Smack on a Wash/Philly and Bos/Mon combination and smitten on a Nash/Det and Bos/Mon combo.

Half An Award (given to the player who just couldn't hold the top spot on his own and had to share it - this award is to be shared as well): prairiep! It seemed like passion/song was a constant thorn in prairiep's side and while prairiep was always near the top and even held onto it for a short time, it seemed that it was never really meant to be. Honourable Mention goes to korrosive, who had the same problem. At the beginning, korrosive seemed destined for a repeat at the title but just couldn't hold onto the top spot, even had to share it with smitten for a while. So prairiep and korrosive will have to share this award.

NEW AWARD THIS YEAR:

Five For Fighting Award (given to the player(s) who instigates the worst on-ice fight - best scrap)!

Our nominees:

1) kaos vs smack (ongoing rivalry):

Sorry but I have a life unlike you and that ratty sweater you wear.
Why are you on a dating site anyway?

It's funny that the first game you pick right on in 2 weeks is a Wings game. Champ!
Smack your man crush on Jerry is really too much.

kaos thats 2 for unsportsmenlike conduct, christ man mine was a joke also, next time sping for the non bunching panties.

look im kaos ramble ramble whatever calagry blah wings yes, blah blah hockey town, smackem bad, kaos good, blah blah wings good, flames bad. that pretty much sums up all of your post.

lets get this straight i am the bloody champ and thats why i am going for this. i dont bet 5 points on my team, ohh wow high bidder here.

one has to wounder if the wings are going to choke as bad as kaos did in our pool.

and get the hell out of here, stick a fork in kaos he is out!!!!!!!!!!
na na na na hey hey goodbye.

2) kaos vs riot (the wagering debate/ongoing Crosby-like whining):

No bet Riot you ruined the game with all the wagering.

You don't get it Riot.

Those at the bottom had nothing to lose in that system. Those at the top had everything to lose it was designed to help the less fortunate. So now help us less fortunate.

This pool sucks!

Look for a new and improved hockey pool comming to a thread near you in 08/09!

The game ceased to be fun.

3) cincin vs smack (the octopi debate)

In Detroit we have had a huge tradition of our famous Zamboni driver Al, swinging the Octopus over his head and getting the fans all excited and wound up.

Our favorite commisioner Gary Bettman has decided to fine Al $10,000 if he does it again. Booooooo So below if you could please follow the link and or links, and sign these petitions I would really appreciate it. It takes less than 2 minutes.

tradition is another word for history and times change babe step up to the now and stop living in the then. when 1 team of 30 only does this then nothing wrong with removing teh side show. if florida had a guy swing a dead rat around above his head, what it the 29 other teams did it then maybe keep it in . but really that would be stupid as hell a sideshow that isnt part of the game.

AND THE WINNERS ARE..........

cincin & smack (the octopi debate!)

These 2 were chosen because this particular scrap was not just a name-calling, backyard fight kind of tussle. This sparked a real touching debate, not only between cincin and smack but almost everyone on the site had strong feelings about the matter. Now one could say a lot of people had strong feelings about the whole wagering system but that was nothing compared to the feelings brought out by the whole octopi debate. cincin probably didn't even mean to bring on this particular "fight" but that one post seemed to rile almost every player into voicing an opinion on the matter. Congrats to you both for being the winners of the new award and for bringing that lively and controversial discussion forward.

Congrats to all winners and again, if you didn't win an award, don't feel bad. There's always next year!

Thanks Riot it was fun...I guess I have a concusion winning the Lindros award and all...lol! Suggested improvement for the 2008-2009 pool, make the pool more hockey knowledge friendly vs luck in the final round. In other words loose the "All In"option on individual games, it really made no sense and took away from the early rounds. I am not saying points should not be escalated as the rounds go by, but not to the extent it did for the Finals. I thinks series predictions are more important than individual games. Thats my 2 cents...it was fun, gongrats to the winners!

Good work riot!
I say lose the all-in feature as well. Totally took my interest right out of the finale. That's why i posted all my scores for the last round at once. Maybe have the person sitting in first after the first round ( ) should get a 25 or 50 even point bonus. It's the toughest round to call, and by the time it's done, over half the playoff series have been played. Maybe five points per series correct, ten for hitting the number of games, one point for each game right, and five for each correct score.

Lose all this garbage of turning it into a poker game in the last round. Whoever is mathematically out of it from making lousy picks thru the first three rounds should be out of it. Done. Finito. Quiche lorraine. To hit one correct series of the first 14 and to be in first half way thru the last round is, well it's just retarded. Unless we want to have folks sitting around looking like the cat that just swallowed the canary. I didn't vote for it, but I didn't really say anything against it either. But it was gauche to say the least.

I'd congratulate passion but I'm still waiting to see if anyone lodges a protest about the fact that his first round predictions were all accepted after the rounds had already started. I'm surprised you accepted his picks when everyone else's that posted late were null and void.

Just my two cents. Great job again. Have yourself just a super summer!

1st round: 1 point for a victory, 3 points for correct score. 5 for series winner, 10 for exact amount of games.

2nd round: 5 points for victory, 10 for correct score, 15 for series winner, 30 for exact amount of games.

3rd round: 15 points for victory, 30 for correct score, 45 for series winner, 60 for correct amount of games.

Finals: 50 points for victory, additional 50 for correct score, 100 for series winner, 200 for correct amount of games.

Throw in your additional game bonuses wherever you see fit. DON'T do the all-in thing.

Tinker with the numbers all you want, but keep a format similar to that.

agreed with korrisve othe rthen still to much for a guess on the score.

first round
2 points for the win
1 for the score
10 for the series
20 for correct amout of game

second round
4 points for a win
2 for the score
20 for the series
40 for the games

conference fianls
8 for the win
4 for the score
50 for the sereis
100 for the correct amout of games

finals
50 for a win
25 for the score
100 for the series
300 for the right amout of games or i like before the series starts can bet up to a set amount of points, say 200 or none. just a idea no all in crazy stuff like i pulled lol. and alot more skill in picking the right team and games.

i really dont want the single games or the score to play such a massive roll. i like the idea of the series winner being the highist amout you could get. and the games them selves being higher then a bonus if the score is right.

Thank you so much for all your work running the names and numbers. I really had a great time with this little hockey pool. I'm serious about the Lightning seats as well.

When do you guys get the pool started? Do you do anything during the regular season? I don't want to miss out and stumble in half way through the game.

The Five for Fighting Award is great. It kind of feels like Prom King and Prom Queen all over again.

You forgot the award for who best planned the births of their children... those were some good times on days with no games.

If you plan to visit the cup, look me up... because it's in Detroit!!!!

Enjoy the summer everyone. Be safe and peace to all of your families.
