But, I think one thing you are overlooking is that these people come to the local forum for Ontario. Just by clicking on that, shows the interest in getting to know people close to you. If any of these people who complain because they are new and really wanted a totally chat free, inpersonal forum. They could always go to the global forums.

[We already give the local forums, much more leniency than we do the globals]

Most successful threads: Say something nice aobut the person above

Crush Thread

Dating games

Other personality threads.

[If you consider "success" to be how fast a thread grows, maybe. But, that is not how we measure "success". These type of threads are completely beyond the realm of moderation. Then the posters get used to their style, and they spill their inane chat posts into the other threads/sections.]

I think a few harsh suspensions would take care of that.

[Some "get it" with a warning and reading the rules. Some "get it" after a few suspensions and
getting the rules "spoon fed" to them. Some never "get it". We could ban them til we're blue in the keyboard and they'd chat their first post back.]

Bad rule....simple.....but you or this website are not the first to impose bad rules........so cest la vie....life truly goes on

No complaints from the posters who can formulate a reply that covers a number of thoughts in one post, chatters seems to be the only complainants

bad rule I agree...you have to wait your turn to respond to something someone said.....and if no one posts anything after you...well your out of luck!~

Read the first post (message #1) edit reply -Post something with substance, other than just one, two, three etc. word replies, then the filter will allow you more than 2 out of the last 10.

yep, thats exactly whats gonna happen, LOL. can you even do more then one quote from different posts?

You'd be surprised what you can do with the quote tags.

Limiting post count does not necessarily ensure quality. I know, I've run my own forums for years. I was trying also to post in the halloween thread about my own halloween - bridgewater thread being deleted, but was unable to due to this.

This place doesn't seem to really attract the spammy types, or rather, when it does, they don't tend to live long. This new rule could prove especially troublesome for someone organizing a party thread, for example.

"In order to maintain the highest quality forums you are restricted to having no more then 2 of the last 10 posts on a thread. Since 2 of the last 10 posts are yours you can not post to this thread."

Someone got this while responding in her own party thread!
as per my above point.

Well crap, seems these forums DON'T support the "[quote=author" bit.

at trapped:

Imagine hopping from thread to thread having a new timer set for each individual against every thread they've entered, the amount of continual checking against a variable number of timers for each user against every thread they've been to would be a programming nightmare if not resource draining /ToB

Your logic was flawed on this assertion. If the system is already counting how many of the last 10 posts were yours, it's not much of a stretch to figure out what your last post was on the thread, calculate the time between now and that last post, and deny the post if it's too soon. It's a calculation, and a rather simple one at that. No need to spawn a process ticking down the time, just simple subtraction.

True, it would be easy if the filter was meant to curtail your postings globally - yes quite easy in fact as you mention. My assertion was based on the restriction on a per thread basis as is the current 2 in 10 filter, which would, at first thought, require a counter for each forum. In any event, the filter is to minimize small, non content posts which are inherently non contributory to a discussion. A time constraint IMO would be more limiting than the ability to post with substance.

In dedicated forum hosting software, there is often a "post flood" control. At least a minute between posts globally. However, I was thinking of thread by thread. For example, if I tried to post to this thread again 30 seconds later.

N=Total posts in thread
Loop backwards from N to 1
Stop loop if there is a previous post by person attempting new post
Check date/time of previous post
Subtract that time from current time
Evaluate difference
Block if difference too small (too soon)
Allow if difference is acceptable

With the 2 in 10 rule already in place, you could limit the loop from N to N-10 instead of all the way down to 1 to save a few clock ticks on longer threads, remembering to set the N-10 value to 1 if N<11.

In addition, as others have stated, it would be nice if the software warned that the post was not going to be allowed before, either by the 2 in 10 or any other filters, instead of after you went through the trouble of typing the message. In theory, it's just a matter of moving the check code before the call to the form page instead of after.

The 2 in 10 filter only applies if the message is under a certain number of characters. In order for you to be warned before you type the message, somehow the system would have to psychically determine how many characters you were planning on typing. Nice trick!

If the reference to being exempt was to me, it is because on average, I have more to contribute than the usual "me too" response. Inane at best, completely not contributing to the conversation at worst.

Do I think it could be better executed? Absolutely. Do I understand and agree with why it is in place. Again, absolutely.

I posted another thread before finding this one. My bad. Still, after reading much of this thread, it doesn't seem a solution to the downside of this issue is to be found or even of the mere interest to be found.

It won't affect you if you have something of noteworthy contribution /Trappedonbayst

It does effect those who have something noteworthy to post. While I have not read all the rules (my God, there's so many and they're everywhere), I believe I have been a pretty decent poster. I try to remain on topic and hardly ever post a small response.....though there have been rare exceptions. I've been real tactful in responding to abusive members and mostly don't reply to them at all.

Still, when a thread is moving along nicely and two or more members happen to be focusing on the topic at the same time, it becomes difficult to carry on due to this restriction.

I don't know what solution there could be, but perhaps a rating system for the members that frequent the forums which would allow them to participate at will based on their conduct might be one suggestion.

I understand why the rule was thought up, but it really seems to be killing some good threads where nothing wrong is happening.

Just my opinion. Not trying to step on any toes here.

If you have, go back and read it as answers your question as far as I understand it.

Happy reading.

Post something with substance, other than just one, two, three etc. word replies, then the filter will allow you more than 2 out of the last 10. if you need to respond to a lot of posters at once, gather your thoughts, quote each member you are replying to, and answer both, or as many as you wish in one post, - problem solved. Many people have already adopted this style, even before the-filter was put in place. / Moderator - Trappedonbayst

Is this what you're speaking of??? If so, it does not answer the question of why some are still unable to participate in threads despite not replying with "one, two, three etc. word replies" and are, in fact, replying with substance.

I do (and have for a long time) try to respond to multiple posts by using two browsers to quote multiple portions of the thread. However, this also causes a thread to die because people do not want to read massive forum entries when they can see that the thread has many pages. I realize this is something that happens anyway, but it seems as though this auto filter is actually feeding that problem, as well as killing decent threads by making it impossible for an active participant in that thread to respond to the few that remain interested in it until more happen to come along...if that happens.

As I said in the thread that I posted before discovering this one, I think it warrants consideration. I have no interest in getting into a debate about free speech or the right to leave if one doesn't like the rules. That's not what this is about. I like these forums. There's quality people here to discuss the issues with and to have a little fun as well. I just think that some of the attempts to see things run smoothly are counterproductive to the purpose of the forums.

Would this not fall into Post Whoring or Bumping your own thread violations?

Post "Whoring"???

Wow. I don't know that I'd call what I do "Post Whoring", nor am I vane enough to need to see my screen name published on a message board by intentionally bumping a thread I'm participating in. As I've said, I enjoy the forums and I do post with substance. I don't understand the problem or why I'm being prevented from continuing.

Haha...I suppose you could say "get a life" and have some validity to that comment, but that's besides the point. I thought forums were for communication. As long as a member is not abusing the forums or the members within it, I don't see a problem.

I've been watching a thread that I cannot post to, on and off, for several hours because I would like to respond to someone (now several people) who have addressed me directly. Once I am able to, I will compile all the responses into one, but it will likely be lengthy and will be a factor in the death of that thread for those who don't like reading lengthy responses. Then I may post once more within the following nine entries before having to repeat the process again...and that's only if the thread doesn't die before that happens. At which point, anyone that was looking for a response from me or any number of people who may have posted two out of the last ten is just flat outta luck.

Anyway, I guess I've said my piece. Haha. I don't know why I expect these things to be heard or for any real consideration to go into them, but somehow, I do. LOL

I just think it's too bad when the smallish percentage that use the forums here are doing so with integrity only to have their efforts dampened. Surely, there's a viable solution. Something other than shutting them out.

I could be wrong.

^^^^^ just trying to help with your problem.

Not sure why you cannot post your considerable responses to the thread that you wish to respond to. The 2 out 10 rule is in place to alleviate chat in the threads. But posts that are conducive to the thread and as previously indicated by the Moderator that contain substance and length should still be able to be posted.

JMHO.

Edit: And you as well as I have just posted 3 of the last 6 posts in this particular thread without any difficulty.

Haha...Ya know what....DEE DEE DEE....I just thought of something.

I'm sorry to have been a pain in the ace here. I think I might have gotten blocked out once and just assumed that I'd be blocked out again until nine more people posted, so I would only post a short message, figuring on using the edit option to finish my post if I were allowed, only for it to be blocked because it was just a tiny one liner.

Like I said. Geez, I'm such a ........

My apologies. I'll let ya know if that wsa the case. If nothing else, this can be a lesson learned on my part that may help others with a similar situation.

EDIT: Yup, that's what it was. Like I said....my apologies.

Here's an idea.....don't let users TYPE in everything just to hit the submit button and get that message. How bout do it after you hit the "Reply" button? So we won't spend all that time typing up a response.

If you spent enough time to compose a post of around three sentences, you wouldn't even know the filter was there. Also, if it's the threads where you hald already made two sequential posts in a row, see, "Sequential Posts"

I think the rule is good to prevent chatter and stupid replies from being posted. But for us who have something legitimate to say about the topic it is annoying. that's okay though some of the rudest people i've encountered are on the forums. When i go to the music forums there is rarely any posts about the music I like and when I do try to post a topic or reply to one not many people will respond. I'll stick mainly to the site from now on and post in the forums every now and then.

This site can be a killjoy sometimes but it's free and I've had more success here than any other site. So whether we like the new rule or not this site is free so be thankful for it!!!

Actually you can respond in any thread in any way you want (as long as you abide by the site rules), as many times you want, provided you aren't posting 2+ times in a row, and you are posting in a contributive and substantive manner, ...not a chat room, never been a chat room.

Since the filter was implimented, chat is down, flame wars, thread-jacking, ...down, Quality of threads - up, and those who don't chat, and post well thought-out replies, ...haven't even noticed the filter.

Limit of No More than 2 Posts in last 10 Posts!
Posted: 6/23/2007 1:08:30 AM
The 2 in 10 filter only applies if the message is under a certain number of characters.

Applies to all Posts/Threads except:

  • Posts Over 200 Chars

  • Certain Global Forum Categories

  • The OP and his Posts on a Thread in a local Party Forum.

  • The Plentyoffish Site/Suggestions/Help Forum Category.

  • Limit of No More than 2 Posts in last 10 Sequential Posts

The Topic Name of this Thread is a Mis-nomer, as no more than 2 Sequential Posts are allowed: Forum Rules - Specific

It should have read: Limit of No More than 2 Posts in the last 10 Posts.

( Since all newer Accounts now require a minimum Message Length of 200 Characters per Post except in the Plentyoffish Site/Suggestions/Help Forum Category, this Limitation may gradually become obsolete in due Time ...)

There may yet be another Filter at play ... a probationary posting Period for any User measured in Terms of Time ... Posting Habits and Count ,that may result in a permanent assigned Status, priviledged with minimum Posting Limits. This Information has not been published by the Admin to prevent Disruptions to the Forums.

How come other people on same forum can repeatedly post ?
I cant post but 2 Xs
I can post on other forum /Thread and am happy I can !
I wanted to start a fun Thread for everyone and leave the other Thread
    for a while !
I dont think I have did any thing wrong . The people that can
chat /post on other thread repeatedly it is just as explicit as the
one created and can't post on !
its as if form of discrimination or negative judgement towards
    me is "taking place !

Was there something wrong with the Thread ? or does POF think
I have gone too far "posted too much in last Thread to
be a part of the new Thread ? Because of my last Thread having 121 pages
I know it is Outrageous ,but it has been interesting . I would think POF
would be Proud that we like coming here so much !
