I'll change the pic. I was just showing the effects of the workouts I do at the gymnasium. I honestly KNOW it's the women here.

That's all?
Try being a Trekkie. Star Wars doesn't count. It's cool.
DnD? Only nerdy if you actually roleplay, dress up and talk.
The rest is pretty nerdy. Good luck.

As women get older, they realize that we have the traits they are looking for. I couldn't get any women to date me back when I was in high school. Nowadays it's not too difficult if I put a little effort in. Take some time off of WoW on Fri. or Sat. nights and go meet some people.

| Do nerds actually have girlfriends? Posted: 5/14/2006 6:46:06 AM | I just got a xbox360 Friday to just play Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Talk about nerdy. Anyways, every time I see this cute girl at BestBuy(believe me,I'm shocked at how many jocks go there) , I freeze up every time I get near her. I keep on wanting to talk to her, then the thought of being rejected comes into mind. I usually pay for my stuff and leave. I asked my cousin Frances to give me her friend's sister' phone number so I can finally set up a date for the hopefully "date." This thread has been through hell and back, so I'm just going to make this thing happen. | |

| Do nerds actually have girlfriends? Posted: 5/14/2006 10:32:01 AM | Yes, I've had a girlfriend who is a nerd, though she wasn't really ready to pursue a serious relationship after much deliberation.
And then another who just ends up being a nice platonic relationship.
Star Trek novels though I think are much better than the various TV series. I've also enjoyed some Timothy Zahn novels.
I own an iPod, three computers, and an HD-TV, and what has that gotten me? Hrmm...Best Buy, well, I stopped going there after the last two times customer service didn't want to handle my inquiry. If you are able to make something out of Best Buy, all the better for you!
Well I'm not complaining.

| Do nerds actually have girlfriends? Posted: 5/14/2006 12:11:55 PM | I like the Trek novels too. Good reading. I especially like Peter David and Keith R. A. DeCandido. Those books are so good I sometimes find myself unable to put them down!
Count me as a geeky designer! I look forward to the day I pull out my Alienware computer and start showing clients what a room can look like on the computer.
|
| Do nerds actually have girlfriends? Posted: 5/14/2006 5:48:19 PM | | Yep, Peter David's one of my favorites too. Dorothy Fontana (that's D.C. Fontana) is also very good, and so is Jerry Olten, and Diane Carey. Tell me which Keith book you have? | |
|
| Do nerds actually have girlfriends? Posted: 5/14/2006 5:53:47 PM | | Relax, no one said dating was easy. Look at Bill Gates, he is a nerd and is married to a brilliant woman. Yes, I know the obvious thought here but just relax and it will come. | |
|
| Do nerds actually have girlfriends? Posted: 5/14/2006 9:05:04 PM | I have the IKS Gorkon series to begin with, and I have several others floating around. I like Keith alot. DC Fontana and Diane Carey are also awesome writers. I tried to message ya but you were too far away. Drop me a line, we could talk more.
Those who haven't read a Trek novel don't know what they are missing

Wrong.
Oblivion is just plain f'ing awesome. It's an experience, much like a good movie or book.
Although, if all you wanted was to play Oblivion, why didn't you just buy a copy for the PC?
I think you might even be able to play it on a Linux box, using a program called Cedega... Actually you can play WOW on a Linux box that way too... talk about nerdy... or just super sexy good times.
DnD, Shadowrun, and WOD (world of darkness al la vampire, werewolf, or Mage) kick all sorts of ass using all kinds of sweet asskickery maneuvers.
d20 for life bitches!
BTW: you made mention of your IQ and someone said something about 140 not being that high or something (paraphrasing badly). Looking around at some different statistics about 1 out of 140 to 160 people (depends on the statistical compilation and some use a healthy deviation which probably makes said compilations with said deviations more accurate) have that score. The disparity gets even greater the higher you go (obviously).
At 140 you are into the 99th percentile (something like 99.2 or .3 or something), so that’s not too shabby.
Now it depends on how you arrived at that number, if it was some internet IQ test... well, the best you could do is take enough of the somewhat reputable ones and average out the score. Otherwise take a 'real' IQ test, the best ones are the newer ones based on not only raw intelligence, but also relational intelligence.
PS. IQ tests have a strange way of being meaningless in the bigger more general life context however, seeing as how someone of average intelligence can rise to heights of great success and power; while conversely someone of ‘potentially’ high mental acuity can never really do much of anything well, or have much success either personal or professional.
Also academic success is not always linked to raw intelligence…
Go figure.

Haven't had a date in 3 years. One serious boyfriend in my life....
Just remember..
one day nerds shall inherit the earth! And eventually someone always wants the stability we bring to a relationship.

| Do nerds actually have girlfriends? Posted: 5/21/2006 5:33:08 PM | | I saw a fellow nerd at the movie theatre with his girlfriend and I tapped him on the shoulder. I said to him: "Good job. Having a girlfriend while being a nerd. Such a rare thing." He smiled and said "Thanks. Yeah, I'm happy." He walked away with her and I saw "Over The Hedge" with my parents. | |

Someone should make a dating site for just us nerds out there. Maybe they have, but I haven't seen it. lol
The hardest part of being a nerd is finding someone that will respect you for who you are and not try and change you into something that you aren't. Another big thing, is that most of us are rather secluded and are VERY hard to find.
Why can't most nerds find anyone? It's because they are in the exact same place as you are. Either hanging out with their families, at home on the computer, camping, library's, and whatever. It's not like you can waltz down the street and break into everyone's house just to find these people. Most people that you find in the bars, and in social settings, are not who you are looking for to begin with. And if you do get lucky with one of these people, they WILL try and change you if they feel like it's worth the effort.
It's just like religion and belief's, if you dont believe something that someone else does, they are automatically shunned and neglected. More and more people are finding entertainment elsewhere, and just because someone thinks that sitting around and playing a video game for hours is stupid, and something only losers do, doesn't make you a loser. There a millions of people that are just like you, and think that gaming is the best, and the people who go out to bars and drink are the losers!.
The only problem. Finding the people that are also nerds, is like finding a needle under 100 haystacks! Yes, we have feelings too, and we don't like to be alone, and we do strive to find a campanion to be with. It's not easy to do, but we do eventually find that one person we strived to be with.
Nerds seem to hunt for the "right" one, rather than jumping the first person that looks at them. Nerds don't play the game, as they find it a waste of time, and they don't like being played either.
Yes, they come in both male and female, and boy, i've seen some pretty damn hot female nerds in my time. Woooooo!
Stick with it, and you will eventually find her//him. I know, my last girlfriend was a wonderful person and was good looking, but she tried to change me, it eventually ended. I am still in search of that one person that I was meant to be with. I WILL find her one day.

I concur, I'm not a nerd, (the truth is that I don't know what it means, and also noticed that there are some conflict regarding the definition of this term) but I believe that what you describe is correct.
What is call "reality" is what we agree upon. If the majority of the people agree that you are a loser because you are part of a smaller group, you'll be a "loser", yet because the biggest part of the society thinks so, doesn't mean they are right. Because reality is what it is *"AS IS"* Whether we like it or not, whether we understand it or not, whether we are -or not- able to see it as it is. There was a time where the majority of the people thought that earth was flat, yet one person showed that the "majority" was wrong, I'm sure you can think of other examples.
And when you look at the final product, it is desirable. I mean, everybody (or most people) would like to be Bill Gates, but (I think) very few are able to realize that he was one of those that many call "losers", because he was probably most of the time studying, and I don't think he was "hanging out" in bars or clubs etc, but probably investing as much time as he could studying in order to develop his Ideas, and THAT is what got him where he is.
Regarding "social skills", this is a problem that many people have, no necessarily nerds, I've seen people with this problem in different areas of society, in every part of the world I've been. Personally I believe that the way to handle it is in gradient, one step at the time, just like when we learn anything else, you don't read a book about piloting a plain and then jump on a plane and try to fly it. Is not how it works. I'm sure you are aware of it, and know why I'm clarifying this.
Anyhow, I hope you find a way like you say to solve this problem, I'm sure that some of you will come up with the right answer, as I see it you are already doing something about it. Best wishes everybody!

| Do nerds actually have girlfriends? Posted: 8/2/2006 1:51:37 AM | I'm sick of people comparing nerds to Bill Gates. Yeah, we nerds have ambitions to become billionaires. We always think that our next project is the best thing that ever roamed the internet. But the truth is, most of the nerds are not going to be the next Bill Gates. Some of us will probably be a computer programmer making decent money, living in a fairly decent house in an upper middle class neighbourhood. Basically, getting our degrees worth the effort.
But I feel a little better now that I know there are other guys like me. I only had two dates in my 24 years of my life, once when I was 21, and once when I was 23. So, my next date is just around the corner, in year 2007! Hooray!

| Do nerds actually have girlfriends? Posted: 8/2/2006 3:24:22 AM | Of course they do! I would even go so far as to say that the more beautiful a woman is, the more likely it is that she will prefer a nerd. (its a chick thing) Keep your head up! | |
