Btw... read about the "barefoot mailman" who delivered mail in the 1800s -- used to take mail from Jupiter to West Palm and back...hand carried it on the beach. One time someone mailed a cast iron cook stove... he carried it in sections. Then quit the job.
Lots of fabulous Florida history. Our Indians, settlers, cowboys, stage coaches, cattle industry, citrus, turpentine, railroad industry (on and on) -- the houses of ill-repute in Jacksonville and those "tarts" who solicited men on the steamboats -- so much really great and very interesting history right here in our own state.
I had asked a historian one time in Ocala when I was seaching for the stage coach trail --why did/does the west have all the popularity when our history is just as rich and just as colorful? And she said, because they had better press. And I suppose that is true, as so little is really told about Florida. You do have to search for it.
Welcome to those of you who are new to Florida and to those who are long time residents... even natives. And to all of you, take a look at our rich history the next time you are in a local library. | |
