Migraines? Curing the Cause.
Posted: 7/8/2007 1:19:36 PM

Imitrex is probably the most used med for migraines with varying degrees of success and I'm glad it is working for you klo. The only concern I have is that taking meds without trying to find or treat the cause is like shutting the fire alarm off without putting out the fire.

DISSGUY hits the nail square on the head. If I may add, one can only take the "meds" for so long, then the toxins begin to do their internal damage. The FDA approves some drugs which have the side effect of "Death" listed. Not diagnosing or correcting the Cause is criminal, and most often after the drug toxins begin doing serious internal damage the patient eventually goes off on their own to get real help anyways. Most often the cure is simply nutritional modification and purging heavy metals and chemicals from the body. For "treatment" of symptoms Imitrex probably isn't as effective as for example; natural toxin-free peppermint oil which costs way less than Imitrex. It's a no brainer, if your house is burning - you put the fire out! There are so many natural cures out there today for those who are'nt captives of the tyrannical "healthcare" industrial complex. I hope people start finding them.

Well, I would like to share my story.

I just got out of the hospital due to migraines.

I had been sick all week, then Thursday morning about 3am I wake up and it felt like someone had hit me in the head with a bat. My neck was killing me, my face was hurting, and I couldn't stop vomitting. It was the worst pain I had ever felt. It lasted for hours. I was scaird, and had a friend take me to the hospital. They did test, and didn't find anything. At first they thought I had had an anuerism (sp.) but ruled it as a migraine. The imitrex they gave me, made me sick.

But I haven't gotten one since. They are very serious......I would never want to feel that pain again.....

I'm one of those rare men who suffer from them... have had them since I was 13 or so... I've had more than a few dates, Christmases and other parties destroyed by migraines, as I've gotten older they started to interfere with work.

They aren't as bad as what they used to be, but when the barometer drops I head for my bedroom and pull the blankets over my eyes and suffer.

I'm on Verapamil as a preventer and Tylenol 3 with codeine as a rescue med... fortunately I don't have to use the narcotic a whole lot.

Sad thing is I was being tested for an unrelated problem and an MRI detected some problems in my brain due to the incessant migraines I've suffered through the years.

I agree sfagirl... migraine pain is hell, and if you haven't had them before there is no way to comprehend how debilitating they are.

So horrible! The pain is overwhelming. There is no way to describe this kind of pain once the migraine starts.

i have a friend who suffers from very bad ones. the kind that make him vomit, poor guy. i once did a little research to see if i could find any ideas that might help him. one website i found suggested, of all things, celery juice. apparently for the person writing the article 2 to 4 oz of celery juice cured her migraine 30 minutes after onset. im sure this wont work for everyone, but then hey, it cant hurt can it? and you could add a little clamato and vodka.........

Wild Yam Root is a natural remedy.

It has to be taken every day--not just when you have a headache.

If you find that you cannot sleep while taking it, then just lower the dosage until you can go to sleep.

If you decide to try Wild Yam Root, be sure to do some research first. It is a powerful, yet effective, natural drug.

Best think for migraines is avoid MSG and processed meats. There's hidden msg so you have to watch it, example would be natural flavour. I drink plenty of water in between meals and take cold water rinse, very cold water on my head. Yes it feels like crap but feels better later on. Caffeine and diet sugars can also cause migraines. Last of all I meditate now I rarely get migraines. You should try doing a food diary what you eat and drink and how you felt 1 hr 2 hr etc.

I also get headaches to the point of vomiting when they are really bad I have found that cheese, chocolate, milk, cream, protein foods such as ham, soya foods, are what is causing them or making them worse. Foods that seem to counteract the headaches and improve them are onions, tomotoe puree, tomotoe juice, mushrooms, radishes the headaches are so bad I would rather eat a raw chopped up onion, but what I normally do is to cut up at least four onions and mix them with tomotoe puree and cook it in the microwave it could take up to two days to work, but when I stick to these type of foods my headaches go to the point of bearable so that I can live. The problem with this is though it means even cutting out margerine, milk, and most of the foods I naturally like but the headaches are so bad I would rather do that. I realise that this may not work for you as people have differnet triggers to there migranes drinking water too and also something that helps is the inocents drinks not all of them but the strawberry and banana ones and the cranberry ones I have just run out of strawberry and banana juice and my headache has come back with a vengance its time for the onions and tomotoe puree again for me. It could be that a lot of different foods are causing your headaches thus just cutting out a couple dosent do the trick such as in my case if any of this works for you I will let you know of other things that have helped me

Wow, after reading this thread, I feel lucky. I get strictly ocular migraines. Basically, that's where you get visual disturbances. For me it's always a shimmering rainbow-colored ring in my vision (both with eyes open and closed since it originates in the nervous system) but, thankfully, no pain. I've had four of them over the course of about a dozen years. The first one was very minor, just one colored strip on the lower left for about 15 minutes. Since then, the other three started out with me losing a spot of vision right in the center of my field of view. The first time it happened while I was driving and I became aware of it by looking at a speed limit sign. The numbers disappeared when I looked right at it. Then the squiggly colored ring appeared. It began to grow, but opened up in the center so I could see "through" it as well as around it. This happened over the course of a few minutes. Luckily I was approaching a hospital and turned in and went to the emergency room, not knowing for sure what was happening. My mother, grandmother and (since then) my sister have gotten these as well, with differing presentations. Anyway, it (and the two others I had - the last one about 6 months ago) lasted about 40 minutes. Basically, the ring keeps expanding until it goes out of my field of vision and I can see fine again. It can be scary as hell because you're keenly aware that "something is malfunctioning in my brain!" But still, I'll gladly watch the pretty lights rather than suffer days of pain. The one common factor I've found in all instances is that I'd consumed no food or drink (or nearly none) on those days (busy days... I know I shouldn't let that happen, though). Anyway, I never realized how debilitating migraines could be, and I wish you all good luck and hope you find effective treatments. The doctor who examined me recommended I take a daily low-dosage aspirin every day. I doubt that'll do much for a lot of you, but just one more possibility since it's thought there are likely common underpinnings to these conditions.

I suffer from them once in awhile. More often than not, it's brought on by sinus conditions (for me), and if I don't nip my sinus headache with medication quickly, it goes into a migraine.

The last migraine I had, it was so bad, that the effects of the headache had the right side of my face drooping. I went to a Neurologist, I was given a prescription, and underwent MRI/MRA; CT scan; and other extensive tests. What was ironic, is they found a brain aneurysm about 2 mm. Right now, the treatment is to keep an eye on it. If it were over 8 mm., then it would involve surgery. The risk of it rupturing at the current size, is very small.

If you have bad migraines, make sure you see a Doc. Watch your diet, some foods trigger migraines.

I used to suffer from frequent cluster headaches and classic migraines. I would get some that would last up to two days as often as once a week. I changed my diet - no MSG, low salt, no red dye, and tried many different things over the years.

Astonishingly enough, the permanent solution was two fold- dental work that was completed and regular massage.

I still get a regular weekly massage - and it is one of the keys to eradication of my migraines... I discovered that most of the problem stemmed from muscular issues. This actually precipitated my career change.

I now am thrilled to get a normal headache once in a while - no migraines any more.

Started with migraines back in the 90's. They were diagnosed as cluster migraines. Usually happen when the weather warms up in the spring and there is alot of rain. When the cluster starts I can almost tell that it is raining outside even though I am in the basement and cannot see outside. There was only two years since 1990 that I believe I did not have them. Cannot remember the exact years. After using Imitrex spray I started to puke with the migraines which I never did before. My personal thought about what causes mine is a variety of things and when the right combination is met then the cluster starts. A few things that I have notice with my migraines are when I eat chocolate, peanuts, coffee, and it is raining outside. When I have the right mix the cluster starts. Stress might even be part of my mix but not sure. I can handle all different stress without migraines. Just when you add coffee, rain in the spring, chocolate then the cluster may start. When the migraine starts the vision in my right eye starts to go. The white becomes blood shot in the right eye. After about two hours of the worse pain you ever felt the right side of the face drops as if I have had a stroke. Becomes numb after. After if someone hit me as hard as they could to the right of the face I would not feel it. During the migraine the right side of my face even become puffy. Swells up some. The only thing that I found that helps is Tylenol if I take it before the migraine starts up. If I pop a Tylenol before it starts sometimes I can get away with a daze and no pain. Does not work all the time.

I have had migraines since I can remember. It runs in my family.

Thanks to a friend, I recently discovered what was causing many of them, Tyramine. Along with that - the weather, hot and stuffy rooms/cars , flashes of light, smells, stress, too much sleep/lack of, laughing to hard, coughing to hard, holding yoga poses to long..The list goes on...

Hi Arley,
I get them sometimes from food allergies and I used to have them a few times a week also. Do you have any warning signs like an aura or like wavy lines before the actual headache part hits? If you do, like I do I take 2 regular aspirin(not tylenol or ibuprofen, regular aspirin) Aspirin is a blood thinner and they give to people who are having a heart attack to stop it. Ayways, the aspirin for me stops the migraine in its tracks within a half an hour before the pain starts. Good luck, I know what you are going through.

OP, you should message me sometime. My life from freshman year of college till now has consisted of trying to deal with migraines. Not only do I experience pain, but I also experience dizzy spells. It has practically ruined my life at times and has kept me bed ridden. I went through so many doctors and all they could do was give me drugs and more drugs. Nothing would help, I felt so hopeless and became extremely depressed.
The good thing to this whole situation is I met a doctor who specialized in homopathic medicine and hormone therapy. I found out through her that my body was extremely toxic from years of prescription drugs. My adrenal glands were burnt out and my thyroid was way off. I also found out that my body produced too much estrogen which plays a part in my migraines.
Now I take Topamax, the only prescription drug in my regimen. This doesn't treat the pain, but more or less is a preventative drug. It has helped tremendously. I suggest you ask your doctor.
I am also on a regimen of natural supplements which help to detoxify my liver and body, and give me the proper minerals I need to eliminate the estrogen from my body. Eventually my body will be able to do this on its own.
I do recieve regular treatments from my chiropractor to help ease my neck muscles and jaw alignment.
Come to find out, many of the headaches I was experiencing was a result of TMJ. You should have that checked as well.
I had to change my diet and take supps, but it has been worth it to me. Taking those hard perscription drugs do more damage to your body than you realize.

If you have any questions please contact me. I'd be glad to talk with you about this more and help give you some suggestions. Good luck, I know it is not easy.

Started suffering from Migraines when I was younger, mostly food related and cured relatively quickly (compared to the ones I get now). Aura, then pain and nausea. I then had a Migraine clear few years before they started up again. Although still related to some foods, I find hot stuffy rooms/cars to be a major problem, as are the pressure changes due to weather. I recently got a stronger dose medication from the doctors, but the last 2 Migraines I got had me spending time talking to the bottom of the loo (despite having taken medication for the nausea) and popping more pills than had been recommened to try and dull the pain. So, I'm going back to the previous medication I used and am also going to try the massage option that has come up on this thread. I'm also taking Feverfew capsules, which is said to help. Time will tell.

In Japan, they eliminate migranes by giving the person collonics and nothing else.
