If you are using any supplements such as vitamin and minerals or herbs be aware that the Canadian gov't is passing a law to take your rights of access to these away from you under Bill C51 & 52. 26thJune 7PM Ontario Institute in Education auditorium there are speakers explaining the facts of these new laws to stop these being passed. Be informed or lose your rights as gov'ts are passing more laws that restrict your rights and freedoms beyond this one. Go to a health food store and they will have info on this. Big pharma wants these to be only sold in drug stores which will push the price up beyond the reach of most citizens. Be there, support you own democratic rights! Jim

| Migraines? Posted: 6/27/2008 8:31:41 PM | After being infected with Herpes and a continuous 8 month migraine and a whole new outlook on life I sympathise with everyone. I have a healthy respect now for what viruses can do to your life. My doctors refused all treatment for what appeared to be viral meningitis, my migraine subsided after taking Olive Leaf Oil Extract for 2 months along with all the anti-virals I could lay my hands on. I found I was eating noodles just for pain relief, when I regained more conciousness I found they contained Palm Oil which is an anti-viral. I've also been taking flax seed oil.
Perhaps an underlying viral load could be at the heart of some of these persisent migraines. I've recently started some herbal tonics along with the usual anti-inflammatories and Echinacea. Chinese medicine and "Averdyric" tradition certainly has a lot to offer for both migraine and suspected viral conditions. It pays to be suspicious of medications that ultimately destroy your liver and kidneys, yet I well understand you have to all you can to regain some quality of life and earn a living.

| Migraines? Posted: 6/27/2008 8:49:20 PM | Best think for migraines is water. Drink 8 to 10 cups of water through out the day on an empty stomach. Thirty minutes before a meal and 2 hours after a meal. Eating plenty of vegetables will help too. I found going on a food rotation diet works wonderfully. Not eating same thing more than 3 days in a row.
I really don't believe in herbs, I believe food as medicine, that is all you really need to do is eat the right foods and drink plenty of water. Meditation can help also because it releases the toxins for your body. Taking herbs without getting consultation can be a dangerous thing, you should be going to a naturopathic doctor.
I can bet anyone with any kind of pain not caused physically has a low body PH. To be health your body PH is suppose to be around 7. To bring up the PH you can either eat plenty of vegetables or take chlorella. Chlorella is a natural food not a herb or medicine. It will drive up your body PH pretty quick. You can get PH test strips at a health food store.

| Migraines? Posted: 6/29/2008 3:38:10 AM | I got about one a year for many years after a depressed skull fracture when I was 10. None for years when I go to 19, then one that landed me in a medical facility under IV and observation a couple of years back, then none since. Maybe 10 all up.
No apparent trigger, the only thing that changed was head trauma. Only had the one in the last seven years, hopefully they are a thing of the past. Visual artifacts were the worst part for me, pain and naseau I can deal with, but losing non-peripheral sight for hours sucked.

| Migraines? Posted: 7/4/2008 8:50:59 PM | | I have had severe migraines for years to the point where I had to have a completely dark room and absolutely no noise in the house. I would end up in the hospital after 3-5 days for the shot to relieve the pain. Imitrex and Maxalt did nothing for me. Execdrin Migraine worked far better loaded with all the caffeine, tylenol and aspirin. One day I finally got a D.O. instead of an M.D. and started getting adjustments immediately upon onset of the migraine (great relationship with doctor's office for scheduling) and I simultaneously started taking a migraine preventative (Topamax) which helps immensely. Now instead of having migraines 28 days a month, I might get them 2 days a month--whew what a relief after years of suffering! | |

| Migraines? Posted: 9/11/2008 12:22:09 AM | Has anyone who has tried or is using Topamax got an allergic reaction from it?
My doc prescribed 2 tabs a day and I think within 4-5 days of taking it I developed a really awful, itchy, red, sore rash on my face and down my neck. I assumed it was a hayfever type of thing (even though I don't usually get that), so took telfast for allergies and tried a cream the girl at the pharmacy recommended, didn't make any diff, in fact it just kept getting worse.
Ended up speaking to my pharmacist about it and he asked what medications I was on, I told him and then remembered I'd started the Topamax so he investigated it for me and said there was a high chance the rash was coming from that. So I got a cream with cortisone in it and stopped taking the Topamax (off my own bat) and the rash is almost gone. Have had a 2 day migraine since stopping it though :( and I wasn't on it long enough to tell whether it was going help with my constant chronic headaches/migraines either ......

| Migraines? Posted: 9/12/2008 8:42:03 AM | I didn't have a rash from Topamax, but I hated it. My doctor started me a small dose and worked up to a larger dose over time. This was several years before it had been approved for migraines. It made food taste funny. The worst part was the stupidity. I would want to speak, but I would forget the words for things. It was very frustrating. I didn't realize it was from the medication until I stopped. I heard some people refer to it as Dopamax.
The pharmacy had to special order it for me because it wasn't used that many people at that time. It was a $35/mo medicine since it wasn't on my insurance formulary. I decided to quit because it was a pain, expensive and not all that effective. I was so glad I stopped. My migraines weren't actually that unmanageable. I just think the doctor just want to see if it worked. He had been doing research on Topamax.

| Migraines? Posted: 9/13/2008 7:26:46 AM | I suffer from migraines at least once a month, which is mostly hormonal for those, but then also just randomly.
I have Imitrix, oral as well as injection. But I've found that Excedrin Migraine works much faster. However, it tends to make me nauseous.

| Migraines? Posted: 9/13/2008 11:00:24 AM | well, for me, i used to suffer migraines 1-3 times a month. I haven't had one for more than a year now, since I became a vegetarian.
I am way more happy now and do not have the fear that i could get one at any moment, like back when i used to get one. ><
was horrible!!
oh well! good luck all with finding your own cure.
i sure love mine | |

| Migraines? Posted: 9/21/2008 9:08:19 AM | Obeytheplug: I have been on Topamax for migraines for about 2 1/2 years. It has helped with the migraines, but nothing eliminates them totally.
I take between 75 and 100 mg a day depending on how I feel. The side effects that I have had from Topamax has been anxiety. If I stay at 100 mg a day, I have anxiety. If I go down to 75 mg a day, I have more headaches. That's why I vary my dose from day to day.
I tried Depakote before the Topamax. I was getting good migraine control, but it made my arms shake.
Generally side effects from medications go away as you get used to them.
Topamax is now the only drug that is specifically approved for migraines to my knowledge even though it is a epilepsy drug.

| Migraines? Posted: 9/22/2008 11:21:28 PM | All I know is lack of sleep, dehydration and a bad diet all come together and can cause migraines... that and a big change in weather.. we get chinooks here where the weather can go from -20 one day to +10 the next... the difference in pressure seems often to be a trigger as well...
the only thing I find that works is if as soon as I know I am getting one, I have to take a high amount of caffiene, an asperin or 2 and then have some high sugar/mineral drink (gatorade works well for some reason) and then I have to more or less lay down and relax for 10-30 minutes and it goes away before I have a problem...
if I wait for the visual distortion to get worse, then I am stuck with a huge headache for 2 days..
I get them a few times a year but I know when they are comming so I know I have to immediately take action or I'll feel terrible for a long time...
I'm just glad I don't get ill.. for me it is mostly visual distortion, then when that clears, the massive headache hits... only a couple times did I get the numbness but rarely in the past few years
I wonder how much migraines are a combo of food/drink allergy and stress such as lack of sleep or physical exertion... the granola crunchers seem to think it is just food allergies... but I doubt that is the only factor.

| Migraines? Posted: 9/23/2008 9:47:58 PM | | I have had migraines since I was a teenager...and suffered for years......later in life I went to pain management, one of the things that helped me, was to eliminate caffeine... | |
|
| Migraines? Posted: 9/23/2008 9:55:13 PM | Atlas...don't even get me started on the chinooks here !!!!! They are a killer. I also get them before a thunderstorm and during high winds or other weird barametric changes. Not a damn thing that can be done to prevent weather related migraines...except for moving I guess. Only thing that has worked for me is to take half an Imitrex and lay down with an ice pack on my forehead for a while. Tried about every OTC pain killer out there...nothing touches them. | |

| Migraines? Posted: 9/26/2008 2:40:05 PM | | Yep. Some come straight on with no warning. Others like one I had on the weekend, I got dizzy, nausea...nearly passed out and had to pass out for the rest of the day. I can't handle noise or light. Smells are the number one cause for my migraines. Other causes include lights flashing (like music videos) or some games, really fast motions, smoke... etc etc. Some come on for no reason. I like taking advil for migraines, and gravol to get rid of the nausea. | |

| Migraines? Posted: 11/6/2008 11:56:10 AM | I got off work a little early today. It's gorgeous weather... and as soon as I got in the door it kicked in. SUCKS. So now on a beautiful afternoon off I'm going to be laying in a dark room with a cloth over my eyes.
Nausea gets me too... I just ate some chicken really quick before it kicks in.

| Migraines? Posted: 6/3/2009 8:55:35 PM | | I do, but I find what helps me is a nice joint. When I smoke one it keeps it from coming. If I dont have one for when it comes then its like a partys in my head and evreyones invited. | |

| Migraines? Posted: 6/4/2009 6:42:59 AM | I used to get severe migraines, but the number and severity has decreased a lot over the years, to practically nil. Stress (or rather, once a stressful event has passed), light, the weather and hormonal fluctuations seemed to be the triggers for me.
Migraine starts as visual disturbance, then "pins and needles" or no feeling on one side of my body often accompanied with slurred speech and staggering gait (because I can't see properly!). Those symptoms fade as the headache begins on one side of my head. I usually had twenty to thirty minutes to get home before the headache became bad and the nausea came. During the worst migraines, decapitation seemed a reasonable "cure"!

| Migraines? Posted: 6/4/2009 11:19:59 PM | Yes. It's like a genetic thing. My mom suffers from them, and so does my cousin, her daughter, and her grandson.
I've had headaches EVERY single day since I was about 6. Some days the headaches will be very mild, other days they will be severe--a migraine.
Five of us in this family have the condition. Not sure what to do, except pop the Extra Strength Tylenol and lay down in a dark room for a while.

| Migraines? Posted: 8/2/2009 7:29:37 PM | | I have chronic, almost daily headaches which often turn into a disabling migraine, and I've tried everything I can think of. The latest thing is I went to a doctor with a degree in western medicine as well as Chinese Traditional Medicine. She has special training to diagnose and treat food sensitivities and claims that she will help me. The results were that I'm allergic to soy, all fats, sugar, salt, dairy, yeast, and food additives, and on top of that my body doesn't process calcium and my thyroid is out of whack. So for a month I'm on a strict diet, then she will treat me for one sensitivity at a time - with acupuncture. She says that she thinks the calcium thing is the biggest culprit. She's had a lot of success in treating people with a whole gamut of problems. So once again I have some hope, with some skepticism thrown in. The only thing that helps the bad ones is a narcotic painkiller with a sedative and caffeine, a dark room, an ice-pack, and sleep. | |

| Migraines? Posted: 8/4/2009 3:28:09 PM | | I never use synthetic sweeteners any more. I try to avoid MSG but I probably don't read labels carefully enough - it's in so many processed foods. The migraines are partly mechanical for me - a lot of neck pain and muscle spasms at the base of my skull. I gave chronic whiplash syndrome after being rear-ended too many times. I was seeing a chiropractor who made the problem worse. Now I'm getting physio , cranial-sacral therapy, and it's helping the neck but the migraines are very stubborn. Thank you for the advice Omega1969, I will check out those links. | |
