Toilet Paper - which way does it hang?
Posted: 5/2/2006 7:04:13 AM
Surprisingly there IS an answer to this question...

OVER and towards the Toilet... yup you got it, behind and under isn't the way to go.

Years back *being a repertory of pointless information for moments just like these* I found an article where the Pentagon launched a whole million dollar study into just this issue.
Turns out, after months of testing in barracks across the US, that having the paper come over the top towards the.. um.. shall we say "ripper" saves on toilet paper usage.

Try this at home if you like, but on average two sheets were saved with each tug-and-rip.

It worked something like this :
When the paper falls down behind the roll - we reach and pull forward and UP, which actual spins the roll and thereby causes the waste to occur as it breaks from the roll too late - as we yank harder to accomplish this - or we need both hands to separate the paper. Further the roll regularly completes a revolution after said ripping, which allows the extra sheets to dangle down the back side for the next ripping event.

The cardboard tube normally rests on the spindle "bar", and when pulled up from under it lifts and what friction and tension is there is negated for a moment, and the roll spins totally free, and continues till resting again on the spindle bar. But of corse after allowing the paper to get longer and longer before the final separation.

Having the roll pull towards you from over the top however, allows for the one handed yank-and-rip as the resistance of the roll to turn is applied to the actual top of the roll along the dotted line - like a sort of friction/resistance - as now the roll is also "stuck by friction to the spindle bar" and to turn the roll you need to add more force to get it to turn.
Meaning you can easily rip one sheet at a time if you like this way opposed to the multiple sheet yank from underneath the roll - and it helps prevent the roll from "free rolling" with gravity / force. Hence the reason why a person consistantly rips off "too little" when it's an over the top roll, and you need to rip off "a little more".

So why was the study done?
Well in the end, this study ended up forcing the military to adopt the "over rule" for the toilet paper and have since saved hundreds of thousands of dollars a year by optimizing the use of toilet paper....

course the question then became, should the seat be up or down...

I can't believe we are even having this conversation because everyone knows....its over the top with the hangy part coming from the behind. Any other way would complicate the whole ripping along the periforated line. If you don't believe me, look in the public washrooms. If its different, well they must be from Newfoundland or something ;)

Pssst...love the newfs!!

I think they hang it like in the public washrooms to save on toilet paper. If you notice it is always harder to get any down when the roll is on backwards!

And I always place mine under...never over ...neener neener

If you put it "over", then you can fold the end into that nice little pointy thing like they do in fancy hotels.

Which really only serves to remind me of how long it's been since I stayed at a fancy hotel.

Great. Now I'm depressed.

Thanks.

^^ Now I am depressed too!!! Do you know how many rolls of toilet paper I have folded into nice little pointy things when I worked at a hotel while in school! EGADS - the number of wasted squared ripped off and tossed just because they weren't perfect.

For shame!

All these years I've been keeping it free in a wicker basket in fear of improper tp hang etiquette. Finally I can hang it with confidence! Wait...what was the right way?

Well, jettagirl, according to Shai (who should know cause he's...well... full of it...), the correct way is, indeed, up and over.

So hang your TP with confidence.

I've done an unofficial running pole of toilet paper hanging over the past while. Of the 18 places I've checked 11 hung over the top, 4 hung under the bottom, 2 rolls were sitting on the back of the toilet, and 1 had no toilet paper at all ...... (luckily for me that one I was only doing number 1)

The cat not only runs on it, he chews and rips it to shreds if it wont unravel. He shreds a roll in under 30 seconds whenever he finds one. The TP has to stay hidden under the sink.

OK....
I was once told to hang the toilet paper over, as it is more sanitary, you actually touch less of the roll. That way the germs(or whatever) are not spread to the next person to use the roll. Just the thoughts of that make me switch mine to always hang over if someone puts it on the holder differently.

I was also told once that the toilet paper "hung over" was "well hung". My mother actually told me that.....LOL.

Only makes sense to have it over, otherwise it's not as accessable, 'specially if you've had a few. (drinks)

LOL!

Hmmm i was sure i responded to this one before..haha Anyways..i HATE the toilet paper on the roll..hanging either way i don't care. I like it sitting on the back of the toilet or on top of the holder..or depending on how close your bathtub is on the side of that..haha. My husband hates when it's not hung so we always have 2 rolls of toilet paper in the bathroom at all times..one hung for him and one sitting for me..hahah

Whatever way I get it on there, ha.
It's supposed to be better to change it if you have pets so it's not facing out, I've heard that before.

I actually fold mine like that whenever i clean my bathroom and put an extra role on the counter that i use so i don't have to desturb my perfectly folded point. Not hard to tell that i work at a fancy hotel eh.

When I was a younger kid my mom hung it over the top. I'm told I would stand in front of it and unroll it all, leaving it in a mess on the floor. And so the roll was wasted. She saved a lot of money by switching it around. It wasn't fun any more to unroll it.

Now that I'm an older kid I am not sure, myself, on the right way to do it. I've experimented by holding the end of the roll and throwing the roll at a house, down a field, across the highway, etc., and then seeing both how far it would go and how fast the owner could run after me.

Unfortunately these experimental results are inconclusive.

Sorry about your house, Steve.

I myself don't care how it's hung as long as you follow a few rules.

1. You actually have toilet paper.
2. It's hung and not floating in the toilet or soaked in the sink.
3. It's not hanging from my trees or my car isn't wrapped up in it. lol
