| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 11/1/2008 11:39:42 AM | | My worst place has to be Bangor, Maine, what a dumpy ugly New England city should look like. And I agree with lepetitemorte said as I live in Newport, Rhode Island. Tourists suck ass, they clog up the coffee shop and the sidewalks. That and I also can not afford to buy a house in my hometown and that has bothered me for years. And my favorite place is where I live, it's beautiful after the summer jerks leave. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 11/8/2008 12:01:00 AM | The only place I have been to that i would never go to again is Napoli, Italy. the government there is corrupt and the rubbish had not been removed for months. the roundabout next to the hotel was piled so high with rubbish bags that the bus could not make it around and we had to get out and walk. The piles of garbage were over 10 meters and the smell was all through the hotel and the area.
As for other places i have been, sure there are places i have not liked but that is due to my own predudices and life experiences and expectations. I wouldnt complain about a country because i thought the people were rude, I would look at my self and see how my attitude needed to be changed.
You cant expect ( or want) everywhere to be just like home.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 11/10/2008 5:35:10 PM | I went to Dominican looooong time ago. It was horrible, the hotel was huge but in the middle of no where. Santo Damingo was clean but I could find nicer stuff in a run down flee market then I did in the entire town. Wasnt much to do other then drink and stare at the ocean or jungle. The in hotel "club" was ok, but for an 18 year old I wasnt into picking up women 50+
Perhaps it was my timing. I wont even go off about the food.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 11/11/2008 8:48:37 AM | | Worst place? I've traveled far and wide and have never been to a place I've never enjoyed at some level. I have certainly liked some places better than others. I do extensive research before I go anywhere. If I see too many red flags about a place, then I choose not to go. To be honest MANY years ago I visited Niagara Falls and Disney World in the same year. Niagara Falls is really spectacular! But both sides contain the tackiest (and not in a kitchy way) tourist traps you will find anywhere. Disney World was VERY crowded. We might have gotten into four or five attractions. Park addmission was expensive along with food and beverages. I'm sure many will disagree with me but I didn't think it was anything special about Disney World. At least Niagara had the falls. Because of those two trips I started doing extensive research on any place I thought I might want to go. Since then I've visited over a dozen countries and many, many places here in the USA. Research and knowing about a locality can make all the difference when traveling. | |

I have travelled to many countries in Europe and have found that the problems people encounter aren't because of the country, it is because *most* Americans who travel abroad are ordinary, loud, obnoxious, and crude, in addition, they have no manners, show no respect I want to modify this. Having worked in tourism a lot in Canada, I have found *most* Americans to be genuine, kind and pleasant. However, there are a few who act entitled and boorish and they are so loud about it (I AM AN AMERICAN AND I WANT/DESERVE...) that they infect the whole barrel of apples.
I've never come across any other nationality who loudly announced their nationality and demanded treatment above anybody else. The other thing that Americans should be aware of when they travel, is that some of the hatred you may experience abroad comes from American foreign policy, which has nothing to do with you as an individual. It goes back to as far as World War II. In my youth, Canadians took measures to distinguish themselves as "not being American" by sewing Canadian flags on their backpacks (and sometimes Americans sewed Canadian flags on their backpacks, too).
I am astonished by those who have complained that while in a foreign country, people didn't speak English to them. Stay home, tour your local MacDonald's.

Posted: 11/14/2008 3:54:14 PM | Kadena AFB, Okinawa - stuck in the airport for three days because we were traveling standby and there was some operation whatever going on; by the third day, we were out of money and down to our last bag of M&Ms; would have got on a plane going anywhere if it was possible; made lots of friends with the other folks on standby, but just the same, I shudder whenever anyone says Kadena...
FYI - I should clarify - I don't have a problem with the airforce base - just three days in its airport was just 2.75 days too many.... :)

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 11/22/2008 1:32:54 PM | I think most places in general offers something for everyone, it's a matter of what you're looking for and the time you go. As well as people, not everyone is rude or obnoxious. Perhaps that depends on going in groups and age. it is good advice to do your research, such as if you have kids, you need to find some kid friendly places or your kids will be bored.
I live 2 hours away from sf, the few times I've gone there, it's been pretty nice. Perhaps it just depends on where in Sf you go that you see homeless and trashed up. But the times I went to the piers, it was clean and barely homeless was around.
I went to Paris, France this past april, right before tour season. I was surprised at how dirty and stinky Paris was, most especially found in popular places that should be respected due to the building's history. A lot of people smoke, so that somewhat explains the stink in most places. The subway/trains is chaotic, confusing, and crowded, as well as filthy with dirt and stink. Wait, pretty much everywhere in France is crowded and this isn't even tour season yet. I've also heard they often have strikes for their public transmit. Avoid the subway at traffic times, or you'll be in a can full of sardines. I know there are beggars everywhere, but beggars tend to stay around the popular places and they are bold to approach you, even some with cards saying in english that they need money. And talk about frustration when you're traveling with a toddler, not kid friendly at all especially if you need to use a stroller, which you need since lots of walking is to be done. If you do travel there with young kids, make sure you have a stroller that is not bulky and easy to fold and unfold, otherwise it would be a nightmare to get up/down stairs which they love there. As well as finding some places to take kids too, the zoo that was an hour away from france, Thiery Zoo offers a safari drive thru section which was great, and a walk in, it's huge! They have a great section for the lions where you can go thru a plastic glass walkway. You might get lucky and have a lion/lioness be near you. I got lucky to have a male lion right in front of the pathway looking straight at the people, it was amazing.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 12/4/2008 3:11:30 PM | | The Congo when war broke out (again) in 1998. I was probably the only person lucky enough to evade being raped, beaten, shot, or killed. I did get robbed repeatedly but only the first gang actually got anything. The jungle and the music there is first class. The food, accommodation, sanitation, and transportation... not so much. Trust me, don't go there - I still have souvenir mortar splinters embedded in my arms and a counselling bill to pay. | |

Am I the only one disgusted by this thread? Someone didn't like Egypt because there were Arabs there! Another Belize because they are poor and uneducated!
What the hell is wrong with you people. Why aren't you moved to make the world better instead of criticizing cultures you clearly do not understand? I truly do not understand. I am embarassed for you, for my country and our reputation. Please, do the US a favor and stay home.
Very well said. These peopel are obviously ignorant, and dont understand that every country is different from their, its sad

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 12/12/2008 4:51:48 PM | | I've seen a lot of the world. I've been to over 30 different countries, and each one in their own aspect is amazing. Although there was one place that I would probably never go back to, and that would be Morocco. The people that I actually met and were able to talk to, they were all incredibly nice and kind hearted people. My only real problem with it was the way some of the parents there would use their children as basically tourist traps. There would be little naked boys running around trying to sell you things. Of course you felt terrible having to tell them no, you're not interested in the cheaply made fan. So Morocco would probably be my least favorite country that I've been to. | |
