| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 3/30/2009 6:26:21 PM | | I just came back from a mission trip to Domican Republic Puerto Plata, we stayed at a place called Tubagua Plantation. It was beautiful but dangerous. We had to leave because it rained and it was very slippery getting around and we were afraid we'd slip and injur ourselves. The owner took exception and made our life hell. I'd avoid it if possible. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 4/4/2009 8:03:03 AM | Italy we had Eurail passes for a month, we were traveling along the French riviera when we entered italy the light in the train started to flicker, the AC went off, we got into the station in Milan and found out the country was on strike. Basically anybody that did anything for the government wasn't doing anything. We got into a long line with baggage in tow waiting for a train to get out of the country. We didn't care which direction just anywhere but here. Turns out after a couple hours in line we got a snell zug (fast train) up though the swiss alps. I was a sleeper train, we had a nice meal with escargot and wine (treated ourselves for escaping Italy) and then woke up in Frankfort. I really like Germany. I'll try Italy again, but it will be from the coast on my sailboat, planing a multi year circumnavigation. Check out my website. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 4/4/2009 9:22:00 AM | | I'd say it is a toss up between Chicoutimi, Quebec and some village south of Anderlecht in Belgium. In the former I dealt with French speaking Quebecois rednecks who made good ole boys from A$$hole, Alabama look absolutely sophisticated; in the latter I was assaulted by a French speaking Walloon for addressing him in Dutch at a kiosk inquiring about the price of cigarettes. Despite this, I try hard not to be a Francophobe. | |

pretty much everywhere in France is crowded
You know France pretty well obviously - Not!!
With a land mass over 2. 5 times the size of the UK and a population of roughly the same as the UK it's not exactly crowded.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 4/15/2009 4:43:57 AM | quite a list... 13 pages... hard to pick a worst...
I'm sure I've been to "bad" places.. though the good places always seem to make up for it... bad travel experiences can happen anywhere on any day... even in your home town....
Sibolga,Indonesia wasn't that flash, I suppose.. though Sibolgans seemed to like the place... you could say the same about Ensenada... however they have Tequila there... one thing in it's favour.. and those fried prawn thingys ..ceviche and stuff... terrible!!!..
a lot of my travel has been on surf/sail adventures and on the roads/dodgy ports that get you there... and the worst places for tourists are often the best places for surfers...

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 4/16/2009 2:16:57 PM | | The place that sucked most ass was probably Russia, me and my sister went there with my parents in the early nineties right after the collapse of communism. Scary place really. They stole much of our luggage, some soldiers would not let us leave the airport until my dad gave them money. Our "travel documents were not in order". | |

Hardly suitable for a first timer in his first year to eighteen months out of high school as a holiday destination who also didn't do schoolies week.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 5/2/2009 10:43:29 AM | Gainesville Florida - it is dank and stinks to high heaven in some parts. 8th highest impoverished city in USA. Drunken students from UF, copulating in doorways, crapping in alleys behind churches, wandering into the streets. The business and homeowners are all hateful creeps, probably because of the stupid drunkard students. All the traffic of a big city with all the poverty and lack of employment and culture of a backwoods territory.
SUCKS!!! | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 5/11/2009 10:02:16 AM | | Nepal. They use any available space for a bathroom. Any I mean anywhere - the side of the road, someone's doorstop, a tourist lookout. After a while you get so obsessed between the smell, fear of disease, and watching where you are walking you just want to run screaming back to the airport, dodging all the way. GAG | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 5/12/2009 4:11:56 PM | | I thought Boston was bad. Roadways designed by lunatics with no sense of direction, toll roads everywhere, and the people who are nice to talk to become animals when they get behind the wheel Having said that, it doesn't sound so bad anymore by comparison.... | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 5/16/2009 10:29:36 PM | | Gary Indianna is the most foul smelling place on earth due to a large papermill and the chemical stench for a hundred mile radius is killer. Made my eyes swell shut, my nose close up and was a sickening sulphuric acid sting on my skin. They should bomb the city off the earth. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 5/22/2009 9:45:18 PM | Egypt. Absolutely horrible vacation. If you ever go 1 day to see the pyramids & museum. If you have to go to Luxor only make that a day as well. You will get insanely harassed for Bagshish(Tip). If you take a bus it is entirely possible the driver will stop mid-trip and refuse to continue until everyone tips him. It happened to me on the trip from Hurghada to Cairo. If you find yourself over night in Luxor, check out the English Pub there. It was the only good time I had in Egypt besides the awe in seeing the Giza Pyramids. If you get offered a package to go and see the Memphis pyramids, eh, nothing special. And Elvis never lived in them ;-)
Also if you are here, don't bother with hostels or doing it cheap. If you cant afford the Nile Hilton & a tour to Giza definitely don't come. It is not worth it. The only itinerary I would grudgingly recommend: cab to Hilton from airport, stay in Hilton until Giza Tour, return to Hilton after Giza Tour. Stay in Hilton until cab comes to take you back to the airport.
1 day, GTFO. I hear Alexandria and Sharm El Sheikh are better, but I didn't get a chance to go as I was busy for kicking myself in the arse for wasting my vacation.
Also do not fall for the "come upstairs and see the picture of my father with Muhammad Ali" con. You will get guilt tripped into buying something at best.
Oh ya and squat toilets ftl

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 5/31/2009 10:29:52 AM | Haiti, without a doubt.
People eating mud cakes (bits of food mixed with mud to fill their stomachs). The most horrible and sad-looking shanty towns - they looked as ready to fall down as the hollow-eyed people living in them! While driving through some of these towns, our tour bus was constantly stopped by people motioning with their hands for food, and people trying to sell us thin, wormy puppies..........
Haiti also has one of the worst AIDS/HIV infection rates, especially for children.
When you travel to other countries, you are, most of the time, prepared for disparties of wealth. But when the vast majority of the country is starving or under the grip of a dictatorship, you are unable to really enjoy yourself when you realize that so many of the few resources are being channeled to the tourists.
It just made me miserable. I ended up giving away a lot of my restaurant meals to people and animals. What's especially sad is that a couple of decades ago, Haiti was the "Pearl of the Antilles." When they opened up their market, the could not compete with cheap subsidized rice from the US. Now 70% of the population is unemployed.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 7/1/2009 5:16:26 PM | | JFK Airport. I try not to fly there. The delays are horrible and the gates for Delta are very confusing. If you plan to fly overseas and must fly through JFK, fly in several hours before your international flight. | |
