| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 8/30/2006 6:51:24 AM | Kuta. Best to get a bus to Ubud as soon as you arrive in Bali.
Manila. Hard to believe that this was once considered the pearl of the orient, before the Japanese invasion.
New Jalpaiguri in India. This is where you catch the little train up the mountain to Darjeeling. Not a place to say unless the train isn't running.
Ipswich (in Queensland, Australia - not the one in Suffolk England, which has one or two saving graces).

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 9/1/2006 9:26:26 AM | #1 Turkey and #2 Egypt.
Turkey have very bad gray sand with stones. They cheated me with local trips (on the way to Pummakale we visitet about 8 local stores.. because they payed "bakshis" to organizer!... i payed for the trip, but not for the stores) prices are not fair.
Egypt have a lot of naughty and annoying arabs (Pyramids and luxor are great, don't get me wrong!) prices are cheap.

New question to everyone: What is the nicest place you have been?

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 2/3/2007 1:36:01 PM | Harlem New York in the middle of July, with two other people, one of them sick, in a truck made only for two. The cops told us we better get outa there before dark. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 2/3/2007 2:40:04 PM | I have yet to go somewhere in the Middle East that I haven't despised.
The worst place I've ever been is Cairo. Hot, dirty, polluted. Trash rolling around the pyramids. Trash, empty Coke bottles and cigg. butts inside the tombs in the pyramids. Bribes all around. Oppressive police. Insane drivers. Taxi cabs where the seatbelts had been removed (which, unlike merely not wearing them, is a deliberate act saying: I care not for my life, nor your's)
I saw a man get shot and killed on the street in downtown Cairo about thirty feet from were I was walking. A drive-by shooting. The poor guy rolled around on the ground for a while, spurting bright-red arterial blood, while passer-bys studiously ignored him. The next day I walked past the same spot and the blood hadn't even been washed off the walls.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 2/5/2007 1:40:08 AM | | Eilat in Israel on the Red Sea - I was stuck there for two days waiting for the Egyptian consulate to open. Eilat is a resort town so everything was expensive; bland and incrediblely tacky with no escape. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 2/5/2007 2:41:21 PM | So, I went with my sis and brother-in-law to this small, rural town in Saskatchewan to buy a boat. At first it seemed like any other quiet rural community. I'm not going to name the place, but it's beyond a 200 km radius of where I live (just in case any locals read this and try to figure it out!)
Anyway, as soon as we stepped out of the truck, we all noticed a very eerie sense about the place. It was more than just quiet, the people we did see looked at us more out of suspision than out of curiosity of strangers in town. It was just a very uneasy feeling. It was almost like something really terrible had just happened there and we just walked into the middle of it...very Twilight Zone!
They bought their boat and we decided to go to the local restaurant before heading back on the road. The same thing happened at the restaurant. All eyes were on us with suspicion. The waitress looked like she was going to jump out of her shoes when she handed us our menus.
My brother-in-law, a tough as nails pipeliner, had had enough by this point. Even he had picked up on the negative vibes. "Let's eat and get the hell out of here!" We ate, paid and left!
I never did find out if something did happen there, but none of us have ever gone back there.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 2/8/2007 12:22:17 PM | Salt Lake City, Utah. Even worse when you live there. The Mormons have a hold on everything that matters, you can't buy a decent drink anywhere, the crime rate is as high as it is in L.A., many of the people are jerks, and they still pay $5.00 an hour as a means for minimum wage for people trying to make a living.
Take it from a guy who spent two-thirds of his life living in that general area!

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 2/8/2007 4:41:11 PM | | Somalia, I hate Somalia! I have never used so much ammunition in one trip or been shot at so much for no bloody apparent reason, closely followed by Kabul a place I can find no redeeming feature of, however the Hindu Kush is possible one of the most enchanting and magical places on the planet. Beirut when its being bombed is no fun, but lovely when it isnt, without a doubt the best food in the world and some of the loveliest people. Oh and Lebanon Ohio, I once spent 3 nights there, they all have big name badges, I think so that they can remember. | |
