| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 5/24/2007 8:02:39 PM | Heathrow airport! What a nightmare. I once saw an on-line poll that rated it the worst airport in the world, even over others already mentioned here. My last time through there I recall walking for what seemed like forever on my way to a connecting flight. I did not realize that I had to catch a bus to the terminal I was going to so after following all the signs I was confused when I found myself walking out a door to the outside. There was a bus sitting there, and upon closer inspection I happened to notice a handwritten paper sign in the window that said to terminal X. So I just got on the bus and hoped for the best. At the other end I again walked for what seemed like forever to get where I was going. The return flight was even worse. The plane was an hour late getting to Heathrow so we were dropped off at terminal different from the one we were supposed to go to originally. They then bussed us to the terminal we were supposed to be at, but I then had to backtrack to get to my connecting flight! More endless walking. Then, you spend your time waiting for your flight to come up on one of the screens so you know where you have to walk to next. They do like to keep you waiting! Oh well, I just bought a couple bottles of Bailey's at the duty free | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 5/25/2007 1:33:47 PM | Wow reading through the posts really brought back memories...
Karachi Pakistan.. having to boil the water to pour over your just washed dishes to prevent amoebas.taking your maleria pill every morning at breakfast and the shots you need (17 in all) to stay healthy if you're going there.. and the beggers and lack of sewer systems where the locals defficate on the hills all around the place... Know exactly what that smell is in the Mysterious East..not so mysterious afterall.
Istanbul, Turkey after my brothers water bombed a local Cop and he came knocking of the hotel room door dripping wet....lol Oh hated Greece...too crowded. Same for London.... Berlin is a cool city to visit. Same for Bangkok except hotter than haities.
I lived in Beirut in 1966 the Yom Kippur War wasn't until 1967 (and it was on the Sinai Desert and Egypt) .. so somebody is a lier...here! From 1963 to 1971 only saw a few mortars.and some riots not bad really.. Incoming!!!! Great Beaches.. fabulous food and what a Tan!!!!
Just a little of my "traveling experiences". I lived in Pakistan, Germany and Lebanon growing up. The worst place and most dangerous places were Rangoon Burma...1970. This society is still closed off from the world.. the plane landed and men with machine guns came onboard to make sure no one but the CIA Agents disembarked. The Winner is.... TAAA DAAA Saint Kitts! Went there on a Windjammer Cruise and the local Gendarme came on board in Nazi Costume and marched all over the Vessel snapping his riding crop against his boots looking for some poor American victim to haul off to jail..... Anyway we nicknamed it St. Shlitz... lol and mooned the Island as we pulled out of Port.
Traveling is an adventure... Thank the Gods my Folks passed on Kinsasha Ziare...where there are spitting vipers in the trees and you have to iron your jeans dry to avoid those pesky bugs that lay their eggs in the seams.. and if your wear them without doing the hot press the next day you have them nested in your skin and will have the seams forever on your body... hum will that be the next tattoo.....?
Happy trails... Going bananas in dating land....

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/3/2007 7:19:14 AM | Hands down - Venezuela. Filthy, rude, and if it's not Bolivar it doesn't exist in their history. I was the ONLY (literally) tourist I met who had not been physically accosted (pickpocket, robbery) - although the baggage handlers helped themselves (another long story). Avensa Airlines is absolutely unspeakable (lost my bags for a week, charged me an extra tariff at Miami "because of a mistake," and stranded us in Caracas because of a wildcat ATC strike (they had called the day before to say it was "overbooked" meaning a stopover at MY expense - when I balked at that, they said "OK, we'll put you on the original flight" and then dumped me - I later found out they knew of the upcoming strike and that was their line).
A couple years ago I was mugged (daylight, downtown) in Asuncion, Paraguay but would still go back there. About all I can say about Venezuela is.........Chavez is exactly what they voted for, so they will get what they deserve.

Posted: 6/4/2007 2:52:35 PM | Mia828, your experience in Georgia reminds me of my time in Memphis......went to take in the Titanic exhibit at the Pyramid (have been an afficionado long before that wretched movie). Arrived a bit early, and the volunteer started chatting before the intake movie.
"Where y'all from?"
"Nova Scotia - Canada's east coast?"
"Y'all from Halifax?" I took a moment to peel my jaw off the floor - I was after a few days getting used to explaining where CANADA was.
"No, but I went to school there for six years. I live about 90 minutes away."
"D'yall know there are XXX victims of the Titanic buried in Halifax?" (that explained it. The bloke was - this gets important - a PROFESSOR at the University of Tennessee, a Titanic nut and a volunteer for the exhibit).
Anyway, the fellow pretty much adopted me because of my home - "y'all eaten yet? Got a place to stay? We got a spare room, y'know.....how long ya here for?"
So far so good. I was there by happenstance, only for a short time, and he gave me the requisite itinerary. Graceland, naturally. Antebellum houses. That sort of thing. I mentioned, in passing, that it was a priority for me to see the old Lorraine Hotel, now the National Civil Rights museum.
This PROFESSOR turned on me like I had just told him I had had carnal knowledge of his wife.........."Y'all some kind of N****R lover or sumpin?"
I rather enjoyed most of my time in the American south, but for some reason that's what I mostly remember.
Dr. King, I entirely agree with judging people by the content of their character......

No problem if B is a travel agent or emporium that pays the auto rickshaw driver a commission. India doesn’t become bearable until you get out of Delhi. Then it can be marvellous.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/5/2007 12:39:01 AM | | I dislike Frankfurt's airport. That layover was terrible. I prefer to buy flights that take me straight to my destination. But I am not in a major hub. Westjet airlines is actually quite good, I dislike most of the major carriers. Southwest seems to upset alot of people on that show called Airline. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/5/2007 1:08:37 AM | I can't believe 2 people have complained about Buffalo! Wow, that's one of the better places I've been. (yeah, maybe because it's just a different country, and my football teams there...:))
Heathrow airport; I saw someone else comment on it. Wasn't the WORST place I've ever been to, but it was odd. We walk in (I'm 16 at this point) customs greets us, with machine guns. "AMERICANS OVER HERE, EUROPEANS OVER HERE, ASIANS" etc. etc.
I walk up, "where do Canadians go?" Guy looks at me, tightens his grip on this machine gun he's holding. Yells, right in my face, "AMERICANS OVER HERE". I laugh with my cousin, I guess we're American today my friend.
We enjoyed the stereotype the whole time there, got nice and drunk, loud, obnoxious.... Oh wait, that's what everyone else in London was doing also... :)
ABSOLUTELY WORST PLACE EVER; Jane st and Finch ave. in Toronto. *rolls eyes* A friend of mine just got a job in Toronto, he had a town house roughly about a block north of Finch........ I kid you not, we actually heard guns going off the one night. Sure enough, people were shot that night. It was also dubbed "The year of the Gun", by the media.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/9/2007 5:30:45 AM | | I have to agree about Charles de Gaulle airport. Easily one of the worse places to be, even compared to airports in poorer countries. The cops, the servers and other airport workers speak English perfectly, but refuse to speak it even if you are only a transit passenger who's not even traveling into the country. Very poor directions and fewer people from whom to ask directions. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/12/2007 1:13:09 AM | | I think Rome when president Bush is visiting, then everything stops...no buses or taxis to take you to the airport....all streets closed and rude italians giving you wrong information when asking for directions. And why should a mojito cost 17 euros in a four star hotel? The prices are ridiculous, a beer (20 cl) for 5-6 euros??? A beatyful city, but not very touristfriendly, since they in general don´t speak any english. Went to Palatino and hadn´t a clue on what I was looking at on the site. No maps, no informationboards, but you pay 11 euros to make guesses. The central Termini is chaos too, big signs lure you to walk long distancies just to find out in the end that the gate is closed and you have to walk a mile back where you started. So Roma! Shape up, and pay more respect to your visitors. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/12/2007 4:27:03 AM | Thinking on the gunfire mentioned above... The Mayfair House in Coconut Grove/Miami, Florida was in the Japanese soaking tub on the balcony when a few gang bangers decided to settle a score down in the Atrium.... no amount of Laural Ashley and antique furniture could overcome that "romantic" weekend! One of the reasons I moved North!!!!! Miami my birth place is one of the most dangerous cities in America can't figure out why anyone wants to visit there! Especially if they speak German!!!
Too bad what you're sying about Rome... it has always been one of my favorites.. remember after High School in 1968 graduation in Madrid going there and hanging out on the Spanish steps.... always thought of going back one more time! Guess the days of wine and roses are passe'.

hmm..I would have to say "Belize" in Central America is the WORST place that I have ever been to. The locals are uneducated, (my date included, lol), the government is the equivalent of neanderthal monkeys, and 'hot' water is non-existent there.
I'm SO glad to be an American..omg!! lol
I DON'T recommend visiting Belize unless you have no problem boiling water for your dinner nightly. I prefer filtered water myself. In the States. lol
^^^ Very disturbing and uneducated post!
And I have to 'defend' Greece here...there is more to see than Athens only....

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/20/2007 4:04:30 AM | Napoli is the worst place i have been for the filth and the corruption
Most of the other places i didnt enjoy were due to a lack of preperation or misconceptions on my part, not becasue there was something wrong with the city or country. This seams to be true for many others in this thread.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/20/2007 4:34:53 AM | About 15 years ago I stopped in Stephenville, Texas for groceries. When in the store, I asked one of the clerks where the beer was. Now, EVERY store in Texas has a nice assortment of cold beer at reasonable prices, right?
The clerk reacted as if I had asked him where they kept the crack cocaine, and where was the nearest high school where I could find a girl to smoke it with. "We don't stock any alcoholic beverages here; this is a clean store." By the time I left the store, there were stares coming from everybody. Of course, the town is set in a flat, stinking hot, nasty dust bowl where the prevailing colors are dirty brown and gray.

Thailand. Lovely people. Lovely place. I'm allergic to something they put in most food. Not such a good experience.
MSG - everyone should ask restaurants to not put this in their food, it's awful.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/20/2007 9:04:41 AM | Maybe my memories are getting pleasantly foggy, but it's hard to think of any one place I really disliked. Even the toughest places (Sudan) had a wild appeal to them.
Jakarta definitely ranks high on my "not fond of" list, though. I'd spend a couple hundred bucks extra to avoid Guangzhou also. Kathmandu is a great place in many ways, but the pollution will kill you.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/23/2007 9:41:50 AM | I guess for me, it's a tossup between Detroit, and Flint in Michigan. They're just a couple of festering, rust belt, shit hole cities, but at least Downtown Detroit is a relatively safe place to be in these days - as long as it's daylight. But Flint? You better carry a gun, or avoid the area entirely like I do. | |
