Aww lol that's where Michael Jackson was born and bread, up until the age of 11, that is. I'd like to go there just to see the tiny 2 bedroomed house that hos parents brought up 9 kids in, but apart from that..no thanks.
Worst place I have been to might be Istanbul. OK, so it was cool, but maybe it's just not my thing?

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 9/13/2007 3:36:17 PM | The worst possible place I've been is Christmas Island... aside from the locals making music from plastic pipes with the soles of their flip flops there is seriously nothing there. I was fortunate enough to spend most of my day dressed up as Santa Claus getting pictures taken with the cruising passengers most of the day that I was there anyways, so it was still fun. | |

New Delhi, India - fascinating but has extreme air pollution and lots of desparately poor beggars.
Niagara Falls, New York - just plain depressing
Pisa, Italy - Worst tourist trap I've seen
Paris, France. I great palce on one level, but is quite a dirty city. Though I've been to places with a much more dangerous reputation, Paris is the only plac eI almost got mugged.

4 New Orleans- before Katrina
I hear ya. Up until a week or two before summer, I was living in Louisiana. I'd been to New Orleans so many times that even Mardi Gras became boring to me. And there's not really anything interesting to do there. Yeah, there's the zoo and aquarium, but other cities have those, too. Oh well, at least most places in the New Orleans had good food.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 11/14/2007 6:59:25 AM | | for me it has to be Pathos in Cyprus, we arrived early hours of the morning pulled back shower curtain and there sat very large****roach, then anoth one ran across the floor and we could not find it, we had to walk through a building site at night to get to the centre and it was unlit. we would come back to the room to find****roaches on the door in bath on balcony it was horrible, i was annoyed because we had gone with Thompsons who i have allways thought you get value for money with, but when i complained to the rep all he said was " your in Cyprus what do you expect". some one came to spray some stuff around which does not work, so we didnt want to sleep at night in case we were shareing the bed. so never again. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 11/16/2007 6:45:54 AM | I confess, I only read through 5 of the 6 pages of this thread before I just couldn't stand it any more. One or two have had legitimate reasons for not likeing a place, But most of the time the reasons were just pathetic! "I watched a man get shot 30 feet from me." That would have been a good reason except the person then went into detail about how he watched the man bleed to death and "nobody lifted a finger to help." including him. Great going ugly american. "Buffalo because there's nothing to do there." Wow! There's a reason to hate a place: you haven't the imagination to find something to do! I think my favorite worst place was the person who said they hated Tijuana because an AMERICAN came up to him and picked a fight! How DARE Mexico let Americans in!!
Several people mentioned Italy or Rome. I spent 3 months in that country and the people were accommodating in so many ways! I'd researched the country and knew things about the culture that explained a great deal. The year I was there, the Italian government discouraged commerce with anything except cold hard cash. So I paid for things with Italian lira. Italian drivers are trained more like US professional drivers. So there were protocols they followed on the road above and beyond those taught in America. Except for their very evident attitude of borderline hostility toward Americans, my research showed them to be very interesting people. Then I walked into a store where an American was purchasing a religious statue. I have never been so embarrassed to be an American. After the woman did everything in her power to demean and embarass this Italian man, she had the gaul to pull from her wallet American dollar bills and tell him he had to take her money because it was REAL money! The man remained polite--if somewhat cold--to her through the whole thing. ...And he accepted her American dollars. When was the last time you could buy something in America using Italian lira? I went up to the store owner afterward and apologized for our Country.
Well it's that same attitude I've been hearing here in this thread. It is not required for a foreign national to speak English. So why do we take exception when they don't? Different countries do--and should--have different customs and mores. Just because the French don't act like the Americans, we tend to call them mean, hostile... If it weren't that this message is getting too long, I'd explain the difference in the way the French see the world. They are being hostile because we've most likely been rude and boorish. Isn't it interesting that we expect them to follow our customs and social foibles when we're in their country!
When I started reading the thread, I was mentally taking stock of all the countries I've been to, and all the states, trying to think of one I found to be bad. Well I have to agree with the poster that simply wrote: The United States. And now I've accommodated the poster after them that wanted to know the reasons.

I am with you girl. I will never understand people who travel to FOREIGN countries, then complain constantly about how it doesn't have this or it doesn't have that, expecting it to be like their homeland. One would think your going to a different country to experience the different culture and people...not to experience the same thing!

Toronto Ontario is horriable, dirty streets, lousy transportation, high crime, not to mention the street beggars. Stay well north of the city, don't go farther south than HWY 9 or you'll get shot, ice also falls from the CN tower killing a few every year and the city covers it up.
now THAT was just funny
For me, well as far as airports go, Frankfurt, closely followed by Detroit & Heathrow.
For scary....Harlem, New York takes the cake.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 12/10/2007 3:58:13 PM | evilblueyes99, I'm lmao. I lived in Charlotte, NC for about all of 2006, and you're right about the Waffle Houses!
I found that although the nightlife and shopping was superb, I can't stand the way they drive in Atlanta. I was doing 70 mph in the far right lane (trying to go with the flow of traffic), and an old lady passed me on the left and gave me the finger while she had to be doing at least 85 mph. They just drive way too fast for me and it rattles my nerves.

International... Turkey. It's a beautiful country, lots of history and the people are friendly. But try to buy something in a shop and the people will haggle your a$$ off and try to get you to buy anything!

If that's your idea of a bad experience... you better stay home, I guess, because you just never know where somebody might attack you that way again!

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 12/13/2007 3:03:11 PM | New Jersey. It's the only state that's free to get in, but they charge you an arm and a leg to get back out. NYC isn't too great either...$60 will get you across 1 bridge (unless they've raised tolls AGAIN) if you are driving an 18. ====================================== HOw much for the 60 Wheeler trucks that my brother drives.? | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 12/17/2007 5:35:00 PM | 'Worst places' discussions are always dependant upon an individual's experiences there. A filthy, empoverished, crime ridden city may be the most facinating place for someone who rarely experiences such locations.
One of my favourite travel experiences involved a visit to the Aral Sea, considered to be the world's largest ecological disaster area. The devastation is beyond belief, and I can't imagine the horror to be living there, but I am glad to have seen it.
So, my least favourite destination has been Cairo...it was cold and damp, I was sick and fed up with being hassled, waiting days and days for an onward visa...all which made me terribly homesick. I'll never go back.
