| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 5/19/2008 5:40:40 PM | | My Honeymoon!!! My ex booked a suite at a resort in the Poconos . We checked in at 1am, slept fullt clothed with our heads on our suitcases(the rooms were that disgusting)and checked out at 6am the same day. We managed to salvage our week by staying at different ski ersorts around and going to New York City. He never did make it up to me. (I had wanted to go somewhere else). So after we split, I took myself on a nice vacation. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 5/20/2008 6:32:24 PM | Dubai. Just came back last week.
It's hot, crowded, lots of traffic and pollution. It's only May and it's already 45 degrees celcius with humidity there every single day.
It's not what its cracked up to be in my opinion, it's a place to work and make some good money and drive a nice car.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/14/2008 7:02:36 PM | | Trapped in a Hotel in Spain because I couldn't find anyone who spoke English so I could move on. Finally just got on a train the next day and ended up farther down the coast where there were English speaking people. Mind you it was an adventure. Other worst is England early spring, cold, cloudy and miserable. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/14/2008 8:10:40 PM | Waiting to clear customs at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow.
Ironically, my grandparents probably didn't wait as long at Elis Island when they made the trip in reverse, and the toilets were probably in better condition in 1915.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/18/2008 11:02:17 PM | | I think CUBA bothered me the most despite the beauty of the country and some of the good people I met. Tourism is disturbing in it's own way there and total Government control like that is something I've never experienced before. I would never go back and was thankful to be able to leave (unlike the Cubans). | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/19/2008 8:38:13 AM | Guatemala city
I have traveled all around the world as a backpacker and have been to many slums but this city was so disgusting I couldn't even eat or drink the whole time I was there (Yes I fasted!). Major pollution from the diesel exhaust of the chicken buses driving around throughout the city and the filth was worst than anything I saw in India. Tons of shoe shine boys everywhere that wore the same dirty clothes for years. That was many years ago but I still get sick just thinking about the place!!
Delhi, India was a distant second to being the worst place I have ever been since it was hard to over look the poverty and the filth. But even with a constant 2 inch layer of cow dung covering the whole place it was still like paradise compared to Guatemala city.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 6/30/2008 9:04:42 PM | | Super Dave I would have to agree although there are some lovely parts of Miami. I did have the terrible misfortune of checking into and quickly checking out of the most disgusting little road side hotel ever. As soon as we turned on the lights the roaches scurried in every direction. The beds were badly stained and the rooms smelled like urine and mildew. The cigar smoking manager with the huge boil on his face who showed us to the room was a bit perturbed when we said no thank you. Very Very creepy place. | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 7/2/2008 1:34:39 PM | Like some of the others on here I'm appalled at the attitudes of some folks on here. Personally I can't say I have hated any of the places I've visited. If its raining and you happen to meet nasty people then it seems like a bad place. Go on a different day and you can see the good in it.
In the southern USA I've been shocked by the racism but also fascinated by how different things are (black vs white line through Kansans City for example). In Paris I've seen people be treated badly and have been too but I was also surprised and made curious by walking through a street full of hookers at 10:00 in the morning (I like to walk cities) and thought that the museums were amazing. In Mexico the huge disparity between rich and poor was disheartening but the generosity of those who have little also touched me.
I've not been to some of the hell on earth places like Haiti where the poverty is overwhelming so I can't speak to them. But for the most part folks need to stop looking at places they visit through a monocle. Don't bother travelling if you want everything to be just like home.
Had to laugh at the Toronto thing too. The city Canadians love to hate...

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 7/2/2008 6:15:20 PM | hey barn2, i have to agree. some of the places that people have complained about, i've been to and while they weren't my favourite spots to return to, they were adventures and stories all on their own. of course, it helps that i'm a bit adventurous and probably get myself into things rather than sitting tight in my hotel but i figure if i'm paying for the trip, what's the good in staying in the hotel?!!?!? lol
i have not seen the poverty that some have described and i'm thankful that i've been spared that. it's probably one of the reasons i won't ever go to india. but i never planned on going to china until i was told to go for work. was a lovely amazing experience and yes there was poverty but the people always seem to make a place, don't they??
i do have to say that i'm always glad to come home, though.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 7/2/2008 8:44:39 PM | I cannot fathom why anyone would travel to places that are:
dangerous, unless one is aware and prepared poverty-striken, unless one is aware and desirous of seeing and feeling cold, unless one is well clothed and planned for just that hot, unless one is less clothed and planned for just that quiet, unless one is needing alot of peace and tranquility noisy, unless one is needing busy and loud
To travel one needs to investigate...know what it is about and be prepared
My worst was Freeport, Bahamas. Why? It was my first far away holiday and I had no idea what it was about. Rest assured, since then I research places and come to know what I seek and where I can find what I seek.
Someone said her worst was Edinburgh, Scotland.... I found it charming and loved it. Someone said his worst was Quatemala and my best friend confirmed to me how dreary it was....he had to stay in a boat that was steamed with heat in a small cabin...but he will never forget that trip Many complained about India.... and yet I have a friend who loved it there... although I am not so sure I would, so I am not tempted A few complained about Russia...and again, I am not sure I want to be in a place where one cannot be in a park that is rife with thieves
My dream vacation will be in South / Central America...I really want to experience life in a jungle.... but I know in advance it will not be a long trip into the jungle....hence I want to be based near the ocean.... Belize and Costa Rica come to mind.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 7/7/2008 11:51:23 PM | Belem, Brazil, by far. As the taxi driver took me further into the city, it became more and more obvious that this was the biggest dump that the world had to offer. I could not believe how bad it was. The streets were just paved with drunks, ugly hookers, drug addicts, and criminals of every kind. The buildings were in such terrible shape that it seemed strange that they had been erected in the first place. Here was a city where absolutely no one was evicted.
When I finally reached my hotel room, the floor was so disgusting that I didn't want to walk on it in my hiking shoes, and the bed was so awful that I didn't want to lie down on it. I finally walked out and just left the place behind. I grabbed another cab and rode to the airport to see Curitiba, which was absolutely beautiful.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 7/8/2008 12:16:31 AM | Brunei.
The airport - I expected one of the richest men on the planet to have a half decent airport. NOPE. Filthy toilets, worse than Jakarta. Seriously off food...not good when the toilets are seriously filthy!
The hotel I stayed in was ok. The food was disgusting. On the streets, the food wasn't that much better either.
The only redeeming part of that trip was getting ratfaced in Miri with British tourists (and I loathe British tourists!) and Borneo.
So why oh why did I go back a second time? If you're ever in transit and try to get on a tour from the airport...forget about it. Unless they can fill the seats, they won't run.

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 7/9/2008 6:43:43 AM | Cancun, Mexico... I wanted to stay further down the coast, and I was right, it was the equivalent of being in Benidorm, Spain, except I'd travelled 12 hours to get there I'd go back to Mexico, but I'd stay elsewhere | |

| Worst place you ever been? Posted: 7/13/2008 6:25:41 PM | Loved Greece, however, I had a Greek friend who knew where to go and what to see so I had an excellent trip and found it a beautiful country. Isn' t it amazing how each of us can look at the same thing and yet see it so differently? That's what makes us each unique. I will say I wasn't a fan of the food though. | |
