Yes....Orkney Islands are very beautiful...at least in my eyes. Many very old sites to see...went to visit a church built in the 1200's which is still in use today. There's also a church which is in a hut from WW2 era....inside was all faux painted by Italian prisoners of war...very beautiful and interesting. Kind of barren landscape...but I like that.

I live in Ireland. And it is ok place to be.

But someone coming from Texas you should really consider if you can live with the constant rain.

I'm from Scandinavia myself and can handle the rain, but not as much it is in here. It's unreal.
There for I'm in a process of moving.

Also system in here is different to my own country. Everything cost a lot of money. Unless you make a lot of money, you are not able to rent on your own. You have to share. one word on that, painful.

Drugs are quite big problem in here too. Healthcare and dentist cost huge amount of money!!

That is just few things.

I lived in Edinburgh, Scotland for 18 months. Beautiful city, very laid back, very social. Can highly recommend it. It's quite a small city though, so be prepared. And winter times the sun only shines (when it's not raining) for about 5 hours a day, so if the thought of that depresses you, steer clear. But having said that, it's probably my favourite place in the world that I've been to. Also just spent the last 18 month living in Cork Ireland. Never really settled into the place, nothing much happening there, and way too small for my liking. Choose Dublin if you're keen on the whole Ireland move though. Much larger, more happening city. Very expensive though, so unless you're going to work (you'd want to be earning at least 300 euros a week, bare minimum, just to survive), you better have plenty saved up.

It's generally a misconception with the rain in Ireland though. It doesn't really rain any more than anywhere else I've been. I've been in Texas 6 weeks and seen more rain than I saw in Ireland for the entire Summer. As EB1 said, sharing accomodation is the most common option. It's not that painful though. Good and bad experiences over the last 3 years or so in both Ireland and Scotland. As long as the place is clean, and you're relaxed about things, there shouldn't be any problems. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer.

Original Post:
So you want to move to one of these three places..I have been to all 3, and Texas too..You are concerned about illegal aliens, do you have lots of money, do you enjoy rain...Can you get a job while you are there....It rains so much over there, and it is very expensive..If you want to move..move away from the border state, and go to Washington State..But if you are dead set on it..Carlisle England and Dublin Ireland would be my choices..They drive on the other side of the road, and you would not be able to take any electronics over there they use a different plug....but the rain would keep my away...

A good converter will also convert the voltage so this isn't a problem. All my electronics are from Australia, the UK, and Ireland and don't have any problems using them in the US or any other country I travel. Shouldn't cost you more than about $10

When I was about 13, I traveled to England and back then you had no worries and I had fun, althought for some reason, no Americans were allowed to go to Ireland. Does the United Kingdom have capital punnishment?

I was first in Britain during the 'foot and mouth' plague (April 2001). Even Sherwood forest was closed. I liked the view in the north country, but the sadness of all the animals being slaughtered and the farmers losing their livelyhood was really bad. Needless to say I burned my clothes and my shoes before returning to my farm, even though the quarentine people said the decontamination proceedures were sufficient. For that trip I ended up staying in Chester, very pretty, friendly and loads of history. Rode the trains to Bath for the museums, and flew in and out of Manchester.

In August 2002 I managed to come into Heathrow, went to Dover, then back to Chester, and then to Newcastle on Tyne, spending a week at Hadrian's Wall area. Great to visit, but expensive, and the cities are really dirty, like NYC or Washington, DC. The countryside is beautiful, but even in the summer it was a bit on the cool side. Someday I'll have to visit London, but only for a few days.

You can drive across the country in just a few hours, get away from the big cities, visit small towns and pubs. The people are mostly very nice, and I love to listen to the various beautiful accents. If you go to Wales, by train, you'll hear a lovely language, (that of my forefathers), but I have no idea what was being said!

You'll pay twice as much for stuff, although gasoline was 5 times more expensive than the USA in 2001 and 2002. As a tourist, if you buy large ticket items, you can get an exemption from VAT or get a refund when you leave the country, if you are willing to do the paperwork. Using the British post to ship things, I had about 25% of my packages dissappear between the UK and the USA destinations. Next time I'll use UPS.

I might like to live there, if I had a really good income, but with housing and all the taxes, it is not my first choice of places to settle down. But then, I always liked central and southern Germany.

Oh I just got to love some of the points up on here, especially "how expensive it is over here!"

Yes its expensive if you are coming from the US for a trip as the $ to £ exchange rate is pretty crapy for you guys. But if you are going to work over here most jobs will pay a decent enough wage. Hey even shelf stackers in the supermarkets for night shifts make equal what others term as a good job

London is expensive, and personally i think its over-rated but never been one for city life if I can avoid it

dont forget about Wales, I went to uni in Cardiff and its more of a town feel than city there, people are real friendly there.

Lived and worked in England for 9yrs now, and would say that generally out of all the most unfriendly of the lot for walking down the street against. Even if you say morning feel priviledged if you get more than a grunt. Forgetting that there are loads of places to visit.

If you are talking of Ireland, Dublin is OK for a visit, but dont think about it for too long as its more expensive than New York. along with this hotels and B&B's etc in the Republic are very expensive at the minute.

Then my home, Norn Iron (speak for Northern Ireland people) would have to say probably the friendliest of the lot next to scottish.. Plenty of places to see here especially up round the Causeway Coast, with the Giant's Causeway, Carrickarede rope bridge, and the Bushmills Whiskey Distillery (oldest in the world) still producing

I have been to England. It was in the late ninety’s when I was there. The former husband goes to Cambridge ever year for business. I accompanied him on a business trip so we started in Cambridge and toured most of the southern part of the country. We went through Oxford, Bath, Salisbury, Southampton, Portsmouth, and Dover and also spent a day in London. I loved it all! The southern countryside is breath taking. We also visited a few castles. I read some where in this thread that English food is bland. I would have to agree. My ex and I wound up dining at Indian or other cuisine. I have never been to Ireland or Scotland. I recently learned that I have a lot of Scottish blood on my father’s side. There are Scottish Masons, etc. I thought that side of the family was mostly German! Haha. So I wouldn’t mind visiting Scotland.

I still get excited by a visit to London, but it's incredibly pricey just now. With the pound approaching $2 but with the buying power of $1, I just have to ignore the exchange rate or risk getting very upset.

However, I'm there for a weekend as part of a European business trip in about a month so I am sure I'll have a good time -- especially since most of my costs are on expense account!

I would say somewhere like Glasgow or Liverpool the people are very friendly and not scared to put there hands in there pockets, the price of living is half the price as in somewhere like London.
The place is a dirty place in the night and too over crowded so go north.

i went to ireland for two days and stayed in dublin. although it was nice i would have much rather preferred to stay in some small city where there were green hills and stuff around like you would have seen flying into the airport.

I lived in England (Yorkshire) most of my life .. I now live in Texas, also since 1991 In a nutshell I hate it .......and want out . I am just sick of dealing with American women, bible belt attitude and redneck mentality.
And liz I agree with you I also "cannot IMAGINE going back to cold, wet, miserable and EXPENSIVE Britain" either
Which is why I have been scaning around looking for a place /contry to move to ....but it's not easy .I don't want to jump out of the frying pan in to the fire
I am just an old school sort of guy who tells it like it is .Anyone got any suggestions ?
CR looks interesting I have been considering making a visit to check it out ....just reluctant to travel there and be on my own .Not sure how safe it would be or how much fun it would be
to just arrive and know no one

Ireland is the best ever. I took two trips there last year and loved it so much even researched trying to move there. Very difficult unless u marry an Irishman!!! I have to say the Cliffs of Moher was breathtaking. That was my favorite. In Dublin they have a strip of bars called Temple Bar and it is a long cobblestone street and the locals and their pubs are fantastic! Have fun u will have the most wonderful memories.
