If your looking to meet someone from a similar cultural background as yourself, it is an important question to ask. Often you can't tell from looks where a person is from. Afro-Canadian have a different cultural experience than AFrican-Americans, Carribean, or Africans.
People from Toronto are different than someone that grew up in Nova Scotia.

I think the question can be "bad" or "good" depending on how the asker intended it, the relationship between the asker and the askee and how touchy the askee is about it. People bend over backwards these days to have "cultural" fairs and food and music and clothing and art celebrations. Yet, here someone is offended by it.

Sure in some places people would just accept you without giving it a thought. And in some places they would slap a BURKA on your a$$ and beat ya with a stick if you took it off.

I just tell them I'm a Texan and we came from everywhere. Or I tell them I live in the state of Confusion. My people basically came from England. As far back as I can go it's English surnames.

That is an awesome perspective to have, semigoodlife!! I'm a Canadian born girl raised in the Pakistani culture...my parents and half my sibs were born there. I grew up with racism all around me, and I didn't know it at the time, but it's just due to ignorance. So enlighten them...be proud to tell people what ethnic background you're from. Maybe they want to learn more.

I'm assuming, since you don't have a picture on here, that people ask you this when you meet them. I don't know if I would find it insulting. I mean, I do a lot of traveling and people are always guessing where I am from. They yell things like "Hey, fish and chips", "G'day mate", "Velkommen", and anything else to try and guess my nationality. I don't take offence because they are going by visual clues. I don't get upset when they look at me and figure out I'm female or determine that the St Christopher medal around my neck tells them I'm Catholic. Usually, they will ask me to determine if they are correct.

I get the feeling you are being a little overly sensitive about this issue but then again, I haven't had to put up with a lot of racist crap - just sexist crap. If a guy says "You look mixed", ask him if he's trying to determine what your children will look like.

When I'm hungry and on the go I get out a PANINI AND throw a couple of slices of prosciutto topped with OREGANO,garden tomatoes,and olive oil and sliced bocconcini.
I also love an occasional CANNOLI pastry with an espresso.

Well, I'm Middle Easter and Arab too.. Not religious, but when I talk with someone and thats all what they wanna know to see if they will talk to me or not, then sorry, try another search.. I don't like that kind of shallow people who would judge me this way.. Not all people are the same, not at all, or the whole world would be full with identical twins!!

I'm still wondering how come people still look at the surface and and bother to take a deeper look in to see all the treasures!! Its so easy!

I don't see why it would be a bad thing? I hang out with peole who are proud of their cultures and of where they come from . I am pretty mixed and I am proud of my heritage. I don't buy into the having to know where you're from to know where you are going but it's still nice to know where you're from however I do sometimes feel out of place (not white enough, not hispanic enough). I ask people all the time that question all the time I am culturally and geographically aware. It is just very easy piece of conversation starter.

I have a status card and use it as a 2nd piece of ID. I hate it when the person starts going on and on about how I don't look native (well duh, I never noticed that b4) then telling me about every native they've ever met....like I'd know them or something.

I am polite because I know they mean no harm. Just annoying sometimes. I don't mind people asking though and I don't mind telling.

If you are asking why they list it on here...because it is a fact that people are more attracted to certain ethnic features

As far as the question being asked in a more personal setting....that seems to be more of a silly question...why date someone if you aren't attracted to them? And then, were they attracted to your ethnic background or the person? If it is merely the ethnicity they are attracted to, move on, they have problems far beyond dating.

I'm sorry, but what's wrong with finding out someone's nationality? Is that not part of getting to know someone? I've never took offence to someone asking my background, as I've asked people myself. If that's the worst question you've ever hand to endure, than you're in for an awful ride.

And why do you feel that since you are "mixed" that only YOU have put up with racism? If you wanna talk racism, make a pot of coffee and I can go on all night!

I do agree that the stench of racism still exists, only difference is it's less "in your face".

Well, neither the habits of my family nor the place where I was born has any resemblance on my personality.
This is so true, that every person I met from my own country don't believe that I'm from there. There's even one person who don't believe me after showing the ID from my Country.

I consider myself to be a human being, for me this means that my body is something that i have and use, but it isn't me, I'm the unit of awareness which is aware to be aware and habitats that body, THAT is ME!

And despite of the genetic heritage this body has, I will still be who I am even if it was completely different.

Because all the Ideas, considerations, manners, type of behavior, way of thinking, that makes me WHO I AM, come from all the experiences I ever had, and the things that I have learned, 99% of what I learned in my childhood from family school etc was dismissed at the age of 22, when I decided that I WILL ONLY use my OWN mind to find things out.

So my body yes has some mix. Like most of us, Spanish, Arabian, Italian, Native American...

Who cares..??? You won't see any of it in my personality anyway.

If someone like to know WHO I AM…… that person would have to interact with me to find out.
And, if my body was completely different and I would have lived the exact same life, I would still be the exact same person.
