Black metal will always be an underground thing....but no,it's far from dead.

Some of the recent efforts from Craft,Naglafar,Sargeist,Mithras,Vermacht..etc are much like the first wave stuff of the late eighties and early ninties efforts from Bathory,Darkthrone,Enslaved and others.
It's still out there and as always, you gotta look for it.

Black metal is still very much around. It will never be mainstream but if you can get onto the distributors mailing list for this genre, you woudl be amazed at how much there is, albeit underground.

I didnt mind the latest Darkthrone album. One of our local radio stations has a few programs that specialize in Death- we played it all the time.

killedbydeth is right. It's out there.

Metal is not that big in the US, but I think it is holding strong and possibly will make a come back. You can't kill Metal there are too many solid fans. A normal music listener will jump around a bit. Once some listens to metal it hard to let go.

Varg Vickernes is a murdering s.o.b
Somebody ought to run a butcher knife into his forehead and see how cool that looks
as that was the only reason he had for killing his mayhem guitarist Euronymous .... he thought his corpse looked cool with that knife handle sticking out of his head.

I don't think it was so much as the church burnings but that stupid so called " Black Metal Bible", half of these kids listening to Black Metal today don't even relize what they're listening to or the ideals that the music represents. They see a bunch of guys on stage wearing corpse paint and they think it's cool. Alot of these little snots running around claiming to listen to Black Metal wouldn't even have known it existed if it wern't for that fcking book.
What I really hate are these little 14 - 15 yr olds who start a conversation talking about
Dimmu or Mayhem and then in the same breath start talking about korn and all that other nu metal sht that should get you the death penalty for listening to.
Now I know that for a few of the die hards this might sound like blasphemy, but I never did really give a damn what any of you thought. I wish that more of the real Black Metal bands would come out into the mainstream like Cradle and Dimmu have. I get tired of the aural assault that I have to endure when I get in my car every evening to go to work for the 30 seconds it takes me to switch the radio to my cd player.
The world would be a better place if all false metal just suddenly died a horrible painful death one day and the only thing that was left was true black metal, but we don't live in perfect and the big time record labels are going to continue making money on the easily manipulated cattle that we call todays youth filling their heads full of this mtv dictates what is cool
bull sht.

All those black metal bands have been overtaken by more musical influenced bands, like Tiamat, Therion, Within Temptation, etc. Italy has soem pretty powerful speed metal/folk metyal bands....with actual talent.

Check em out.

Luca Turilli, Dark Moor, Angra, Rhapsody, After Forever, Shaman, Zonata...I could go on...

You forgot Moonspell
I don't know how close to traditional black metal that band is, but what purpose does genre serve without good music? If you're into gothic, devilish music, Moonspell won't disappoint you. Plus, it doesn't usually have the opera that bands like Therion and Within Temptation have (with the exception of Wolfheart). Therion is also a great band with very refreshing and creative music that you can't find in mainstreme music, where all music pretty much use the same sort of melodies over and over and ove......Zzzzzzzz....

I never heard of black metal. I have heard of Light Metal.

You meant to say "white metal", didn't you

Bands like Dark Tranquility, though, shouldn't be classified as Black Metal. It's too melodic, and never in a darkly profound sense. When they play in a minor, you don't think "Ohhh man, this is like the cure's pornography album". You think, "Okay, so they're playing in a minor..."

I don't think black metal is dead. But then again, it's sometimes tough to know what is considered "true" black metal or not. The genre's fans sometimes seem like the most elitist people you could ever meet. I've heard a lot of arguments over whether certain bands are still black metal or not. I mean, it's a given that bands like Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir and Immortal are no longer considered black metal (although I love the hell out of all three of them). But I don't even know if you could still consider Emperor to be black metal, since there are some who'll tell you they're not.

I think the last black metal CD that I really loved was Dark Funeral's latest one. That one's incredible. I'm also really getting into 1349, too. And I've always liked the Marduk songs that are slowed down, like Bleached Bones. I like their faster blast beat-type stuff, too, but to an extent. I just wish they had a little more variety.

I don't know. I just get sick of all the bickering I see online about whether or not certain bands fit into certain genres. The amount of genre lables in metal music is ridiculous. All I know is that I love metal in general.

I think Black Metal will always be around regardless of whether some people want it to be or not. It will live on much in the same way that punk has survived to the present day in its various forms. Personally, I'm glad that the church burnings and excessive blasphemy, and other forms of satanic silliness have died off over the years. I'm glad to see that the music itself has been going into more symphonic and progressive directions. While I don't care much for Satyricon's new direction, I really like the newer stuff that I have heard from Behemoth and Cradle of Filth.
There are some seriously great Death/Black metal bands out there right now that are making some very killer music. Old Mans Child, Dimmu Borgir, Amon Amarth, Crimson Moonlight, Slechtvalk, Moonsorrow, and 1349 are just a handful of bands that are very much alive and kicking...undeniable proof that Black/Death metal will not only live on for decades to come, but also continue to evolve to new levels of creativity.

I agree with you on that...the church burnings, murders, etc. have gained notoriety for black metal, but not much else. I've always been more into the music itself, more than anything (although I can't deny that the shock factor of the whole scene kind of got me to check it out in the first place).

Has anyone seen the new Dimmu Borgir video? The Serpentine Offering? Holy crap, that song and video are both badass. I was pretty psyched to hear some new stuff from them (especially since Hellhammer is drumming on this one), but the new song has blown my expectations away. Especially since Death Cult Armageddon wasn't all that I expected from it.

Speaking of Dimmu Borgir, I just browsed through used CDs at a local record store and found a signed copy of Godless Savage Garden (signed by Shagrath, Silenoz and Nagash). Who the hell would ever give that away? There's also a signed copy of Mayhem's Grand Declaration of War that I have to go back and pick up. I'm guessing the same guy sold both of those. But I'm rambling, so I'll stop here.

The guy who runs the local metal store here in Vancouver lectured me on this subject for about a half hour. As you probably suspect, trying to apply any sort of definition to metal is like herding cats. Everyone has an interpretation. His theory was basically, Black Metal was a victim of it's own creativity - it just kept changing until it one day it just wasn't true black anymore.

At The Gates (while maybe not truly black) is probably my all time favorite metal band. My son is a wicked guitar player and I successfully got him off the emo shit and into Emperor and ATG and he loves playing it. So, there is hope.

Black Metal is like any other genre.

You have people who are involved in it for the scene, and you have people who are involved in it for the music.

For scenesters, you have the novelty hounds who will move on to something else one they realize it is not making them liked or respected (or feared or whatever), or they get bored with it, and then you have the people who are truly into it, and will never stop being into it. And for that reason, Black Metal as a scene will never die.

Then you have the people who just listen to x number of Black Metal bands because the music makes all their synapses fire, but are not really concerned with how they are labeled.
Generally, these people will will experiment and branch out with the music, and often earn derision from the true scenesters.

This is basically the dynamic of any genre. Thats why you keep hearing 'Hip Hop is dead' when it's not, 'rock 'n roll is dead' when its not, etc, etc. This also why you will have purists calling anyone who isn't a purist a poser, musicians who put their heart and soul into making the music scoff and juvenile purists, and ignorants fools who will judge people by the music they listen to.

Black Metal is dead? Whatever, who cares, I'm going to go listen to some Enslaved. Keep music and trends separate ffs.

Yeah, I hate it when people get attached to black metal just for the shock value itself, and its "underground" status. That's an insult to a lot of the music. Black metal has put out some really good stuff that's been atmospheric and totally relentless at the same time. But yeah, you can tell who the trend hoppers are. They'll think they're the biggest hardasses on the planet just because they have a Mayhem shirt. They'll try to seem as grim as possible just to show how "evil" they are.

But I'm definitely for black metal bands trying new things. I love Mayhem's Grand Declaration of War album, although it seems like they're going back to a more traditional style. Chimera wasn't a bad disc, either, but it didn't seem as inspired as GDoW.

I also get confused about the synthesizer backlash now. People get so angry at bands that use synths now, but Burzum is a highly respected black metal band. Didn't Varg use synths on most of his stuff? Is it because of the production values of the newer bands?

And Enslaved kicks ass, btw. Now I need to play In Chains Until Ragnarok.

Burzum is a load of CRAP. The ONLY reason that anyone pays attention to it is because of the drama from the Mayhem days.

As for black metal being dead.....thats like saying "punk is dead". Metal evolves, metal changes, metal becomes new styles of metal.

Last I checked Sammeal and Gorgoroth were black metal.....and as for the more melodic aspect of the newer stuff, so what? The message and soul of the music is still essentially the same.

There is a Good Segment about Black Metal in the New Documentary 'Metal: A Headbangers Journey'. They Interview members of Mayhem (sorta).

Oh man, that was GREAT. I love later on, when they're talking about how the whole "devil horns" thing got started... They show all the guys giving the horns, then the drunken Mayhem guy giving the finger; oh god, I laughed at that for quite a while...

Sorry, I had to say that.

I know about BM, but it's never interested me...*shrugs* I'm kinda surprised that there's even enough of a scene to say that it has died

if you're not interested, then you don't know enough about the scene to judge it.
Hair Metal, for example. It existed. Was not interested, but was well aware of the "scene".
Yes, there is a Huge BM scene. I'm not talking "boy band" huge. I'm talking "bands that have great musicians and know how to write a song" huge, if that makes any sense at all. lol
I like Naglfar. and others... too MANY to name...
