K, the oldies on here know my thoughts on this...

My Mum had a mastectomy at the age of 32, when she had cancer again in later life the Doctor said to her "now Mrs C, we can give you a lumpectomy and rebuild your breast and whilst we are there we can reconstruct your other breast". My Mum looked at him like he was quite insane and said "No thanks, just take the effing thing off, i have been wonky for almost 30 years, at least now i will balance!"
I asked her on the way home from the hospital that day "Mum why didnt you have a reconstruction done?" She then went on to tell me how, at the age of 32, she was just so pleased to be alive that she just wanted to get home to her kids and be with them and get on with being a Mother. She said although it bothered her a bit, my Dad was just so pleased she wasnt dead and was around to be with him and us that is was never ever an issue.
I was lucky to be raised by someone with that attitude, she was such an inspiration to me and i believe, from the heart, that her story shows that you maybe need to look deeper inside rather than bemoaning your saggy boobs or big nose or wobbly bum.

So no, i would not have plastic surgery. Knowing how my Darlin Mum had lived with such a physical blight and how it DIDNT affect her gave me rather more self respect than that

Plastic surgery..... Yay or nay?

First of all if money was no object I would say hell yes...!!! There's various things I would have done but also if money was no object I would probably be able to change some naturally... have people aiding me with things like a dietician, a nutritionist, a personal trainer, better made clothes, an on an on an on.....

But secondly.... when I read Foxy's post I thought how superficial my thoughts/desires seemed. Thanks for the grounding there.

Foxy - really lovely post - very inspirational. When my niece had her mastectomy at 29 she said she didn't care about losing her breast at all as it was where the cancer was and she just wanted to get rid of the cancer, she didn't care about the body part that was going with it.

However a couple of years after she recovered she did have a reconstruction, not for cosmetic reasons but because she was sick of paying £50 a shot for ugly prosthetic bras to balance her out. She was offered a chance to have her other breast lifted and made to match her 'new' one but she declined, saying that after what she'd been through what they looked like didn't matter as long as she had two boobs and could buy a bra for a fiver from primark she'd be happy.

I'd not have surgery to improve on what god gave me either, I'm glad I've got all of my body parts in tact and that they all work, I feel fortunate and wouldn't change anything with surgery.

^^^^^^ Dave, don't change a thing.

^^^^^^ Willis - sounds like DIY will work for you.

That's what I would like done desperately a tummy tuck I keep trying to save but other things always seem to need repairing/replacing.

It may seem like vanity to some maybe it is but it really upsets me and to be honest it holds me back. I'm conscious of it all the time even clothed. I have looked into several times but 4 grand seems such an unnecessary expense.
If I ever won the lottery the first thing I would do would be to book myself into a clinic for the procedure before anything else.

I had cosmetic surgery to have a breast reduction when i was 22 as i was a HH cup. They took me down to a FF cup and the darn things grew again to a GG cup as they are now.

The NHS was prepared to give me a tummy tuck....abdominoplasty/apronectomy free but i declined until i feel i REALLY cannot cope with the skin

I'd do it for me,not for a fella...no way Jose!

No more surgery for me

A friend of mine had a gastric band fitted about 18 months ago, she lost 9 stone very quickly - in about 7 months. She's had her body lift done to remove all the excess skin left from losing the weight so fast 3 months ago and she's still in complete agony and still has a number of weeping scars refusing to heal. She is totally miserable and keeps on saying she wishes she was just fat again at least she felt healthy and happy then.

I know that some people would say serves her right she should have done it the hard way diet and exercise and I'd agree. But the thing is she was happy and healthy when she was overweight, she felt pressured by whatever; her husband, society, etc etc into taking drastic action. After the band was fitted she was miserable as she actually enjoyed eating before and found herself nibbling on nothing and missed sitting down with her family to a meal etc. Then she was thin and miserable because she had this horrid skin hanging everywhere, then she had the body lift and is miserable because she's in pain and can hardly move. Hopefully one day she will be happy again, but is it really all worth it? She used to enjoy a health sex life with her husband and now it's non existant, first because she was ashamed of her skin hangings and now because she's physically not capable. She's beating herself up about it and constantly worried that he's going to leave her. When I said to her "well this is what he got when he wanted a new slimmer model, I'd tell him to shut up or f*ck off myself" she defended him vehemently and his 'right' to a slim wife (even though she was slimmer when she had the band fitted than when she met him). It's all very sad.

Another mate had lipo on her thighs - cost her £3k and within 6 months was back and now she has these two deep horid dimples in the back of each leg which make her more miserable than her thighs ever did.

This kind of thing puts me off to be honest besides my being content with the gifts god blessed me with.

I wouldn't want to alter the way I looked (although some may disagree and say that I should) but I would have my tummy done.......only because it has been ruined by my 2 beautiful boys. I figure why live the rest of your life feeling uncomfortable with something.

I think if I was still with the kids dad this wouldn't bother me at all.......I get a bit conscious about it at the thought of meeting someone though. But none of us are perfect.....my last partner had a pot belly, what was his excuse???? But I loved it all the same!

Foxy..thats a moving story and your mum has shown great strength of character.
I opted for the rebuild when i had a double mastectomy though, i'm glad i did too, would i again?..yes for something like that.
I'd never go for a facelift or something though.

Like your mum Foxy, my mum chose not to have reconstruction after her mastectomy. She just wanted rid of the cancer.Unfortunatley she had the most aggressive and it spread.
Operations and hospitals freak me out so no way would i have plastic surgery.I come with stretch marks and wobbly bits, big ears and a big nose and thats what makes me who i am.Dont give a stuff if anyone dont like how i look.

Thinking mm maybe the older I get. A face lift and to firm up my jawline. The prob is that the rest of you gets older. Would a 30 year old face on a 50 year old look odd? Me thinks yes.
I wonder if you'd have to get other bits done to avoid looking like an identikit pic.
I think dental work looks great, and would seriously consider bleaching.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ this is probably why when people start they just can't stop. Best not to get on the downward slope in the first place in my opinion.

However, Cailin's story is very interesting and as usual she was very open and honest in her post which is always thought provoking. She doesn't strike me as the type to feel insecure about herself with any other parts of her body and obviously now the offending part has been sorted she is happy and may never have any surgery again. It is amazing how the surgery turned her life around and that can only be good.

Is it therefore wise to have something sorted out if it is holding you back in your life but know where to draw the line and not get drawn into an endless struggle to keep all of your body bits looking 10 years younger simply for vanity's sake?

Anneri, i would never ever say i disagreed with someone having surgery for what isnt actually a cosmetic reason, you had something taken away and therefore were putting it back.. Hope that makes sense??!! (xx)
I wouldnt, for example, have a nose job or my boobs done purely for cosmetic reasons.

I think when cailin and i had our exchange before, i was still very raw from my Mother's death and really did have it in my head that what she did was so inspirational and i guess i was rather bitter to a degree about things and couldn't see past her and what she did, i wouldnt say my opinion has changed as such but only for myself and how i view things. I dont have that degree of anger in me anymore and if someone wishes to have some sort of surgery that is purely cosmetic, whether i would have it done or not, i dont have the same degree of almost anger that i had before! Hope that makes sense people!

It's a lovely idea to go and get everything changed. I would love to change my nose, get bigger boobs and be a little slimmer, but once that's done, what am I going to want to get done next? Plus, these things are me... despite those things I don't like about me, essentially I like me and don't want to change me, this might change in the future, who knows what will happen to me and my body? I would never say never...

I don't think I could ever get with a man who was so insecure that he spent all that money and went through all that pain to change something that wasn't a serious blight to this person's life. I understand boob reductions because of the pain in your back and grooves in the shoulders and other necessities that can affect people and cripple their lives, but sometimes, you have to admit, people go through all of that pain and worry for their loved ones of having an operation for pure and simple vanity. Is that attractive?

I'd go for bigger rounder boobs......> if i had money. I have no bad thoughts for anybody who had their boobs or face done... in order to look good! It is their own business.

Cosmetic or Plastic surgery mean different things to different people.

We all s at the rich women who go too far and end up with the wind tunnel effect on their faces, but who would deny someone, or indeed not encourage someone, in the case of a bad scar on the face or a badly misshapen face as a result of a birth defect?

I recall in my 30s having a facial scar that was the result of a cricket accident - 17 stitches is the only record I ever held for my Cricket Club. After a year, the L-shape scar under my eye was still noticeable, although I had no problem at all going out in public with it. I readily requested an appointment with a plastic surgeon under the NHS, who reassured me that I still had a year of healing to do. He said it was a very good job and I should compliment the A & E doctor who sewed me up. He said it would all but disappear in time. He was absolutely spot-on and it is only noticeable when I have a deep sun tan now, and then only about and inch of it.

I also understand how women's breasts are usually an integral part of their identity and I would never try to dissuade anyone who genuinely felt they needed augmentation or even reduction. However, I would warn of the dangers of silicone implants, having a friend in the USA who had them burst and has been dogged with serious ill-health ever since.

Pure cosmetic surgery, where no one else can see, or is bothered by, the defect that the "owner" complains about, is a signal for some counselling before any surgery is undertaken.

I think from an ethical standpoint that if u are getting it done because of something that has happened to you that is beyond your control, like an act of violence or an accident, then definately a yay !!

I wouldn't get surgery done for vanity reasons but if they want to remove a bit more of the flabby tummy, while they have me open on the operating table, I will not object!

I'd say it was a woman thing. but i wouldn't mind having my jaw line widend so it's more square & teeth strightened and whitened.

everything else needs exersize not much i can do without that everything else i am happy with, oh maybe my fingers are too long and narrow but nothing can be done there.
