I would grow extra eyes to watch your kids too.. If I recall, there were ~40,000 who attended last year

| Lilac festival Posted: 5/26/2006 6:41:55 PM | If you read the thread you would know: Here's the cut and paste: Lilac Festival - Sunday May 28th 2006! Sunday, May 28th, 2006, marks the date of the 17 th annual 4 th Street Lilac Festival, and the streets have never been hotter! In 2005 an estimated 120,000 Calgarians participated in this fabulous one-day festival. They enjoyed the wide array of entertainers that were featured on stages and entertainment zones along 4 th Street in the heart of the Mission district. In addition, they had an opportunity to shop at over 600 craft, food and entertainment vendors along the 13 blocks of the festival. With something for almost everyone to see and do we had participants dancing in the streets to the smooth sounds and scrumptious tastes. Fourth Street is known for it's diverse cultural restaurants - "you can eat around the world on 4 th " - and those restaurants took to the streets that day selling samples of their fabulous menus. | |

| Lilac festival Posted: 5/26/2006 10:35:48 PM | Wow, I want to come back just for this one festival!
I went last year (and every year beforehand for four years). It was the first weekend that was really nice, so it was PACKED. By noon it was, literally, wall to wall people along 4th Street (from about 12 Ave to 20th). I've never seen anything like it. A large group from LiveJournal all went together; thank goodness we had a 7ft tall man in our midst... all I did all day was look for him to find the others! Honestly, it got to the point around 3pm where even basic movement was impossible (i.e. shoulder-to-shoulder, back-to-back people), so we scooted down side streets just to get to a place to sit.
It's fun for the wee ones if you go before noon; pee breaks and getting liquid refreshments after that time will be brutal. There is a parade as well that takes up the whole street that normally is a lot of fun; tons of bellydancers, political parties, etc.
My girlfriend owns a restaurant along that strip (Bistro 2210); I can't even imagine the chaos, considering her shop is smack in the middle of the festivities!
Lots of local music and beer, basically. I've always gone just to see friends I haven't run into in ages... *laugh* Imagine, more than 1/10 of Calgary's population showed up last year.

| Lilac festival Posted: 5/27/2006 6:59:30 AM | Here is the current forecast for tomorrow from Environment Canada. I suspect a lot of people will bail on this one and stay home instead unless the forcast changes. ___________________________________________

| Lilac festival Posted: 5/27/2006 9:30:05 AM | I like a challenge. Sadly, a lot of people claim they do, but few are actually willing to prove it.... I'm gonna kick the weather's A$$.
See the three or four of you tomorrow at the festival. That's IF I see ya there..
|
| |
| Lilac festival Posted: 5/27/2006 7:19:33 PM | Due to the uncertainty of the weather and also uncertain as to who is truly plannin to go. I propose that you make your own ways for this event.
I may or may not see you there!
