| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 12/29/2007 2:15:57 PM | I remember the 70s punk explosion well. Even though they were not really metal, I believe they started the whole ball rolling as far as giving female vocalists an alternative path in music. Some I remember in the Wendy-O vein:
ROMEO VOID X-RAY SPECS SOUIXIE AND THE BANSHEES THE WAITRESSES
And who could forget Patty Smith, The Cramps, or Sonic youth??

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 12/30/2007 7:58:35 AM | I do think that the singer in Kittie is good and quite talented. She does all the different voices herself... but the female musicians are not that good. I do ike Angela Gosgow from Arch enemy... and i did love the opera singer in the heavy metal band Nightwish (they fired her and the new one is not as good). Cristina Scabbia in Lacuna Coil is also good. But now i come to think about it none of them are great.
YAY so there is hope for me yet.

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 12/30/2007 1:17:12 PM | I got one for ya that you may not know but will wanna check out! Emily Whitehurst the former lead singer of Tsunami Bomb who now sings in a band called The Action Design frickin' kicks @$$, takes names, and then turns 'em into heiroglyphic symbols!
...I have no idea what that means...
Every now and then you'll hear a bit of Belinda Carlisle Go-Go's era influence in her sound and delivery but then she'll kick out a note that'll beotch slap ya like an elbow to the temple (but in a good way)!!
ummmm did I mention she's hot??? yeah, she's got that going for her too!
If I were married, I'd tell Emily that I'd leave my wife for her...Guess it's a good thing (or explains why) I'm not married

I bought it as a Christmas present to myself and man.. what a read...!!! The authoress has written about... Janis Joplin, Marianne Faithful, Tina Turner, Suzi Quatro, Joan Jett, Ann & Nancy Wilson, Patti Smith, Stevie Nicks, Debbie Harry, Annie Lennox, Pat Benatar, Chrissie Hynde, Madonna, Chrissy Amphlett, PJ Harvey, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow, Courtney Love, Alanis Morissette, Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Avril Lavigne, Suze DeMarchi, Sarah McLeod, Ella Hooper and Natalie Bassingthwaighte....
While I personally dont agree with a couple of the choices I cant comment on them in the book just yet as I have only got to Tina Turner!! lol

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 2/5/2008 7:51:31 AM | | In my opinion, probably the best female metal artists learned from various sources like Ann Wilson admired Robert Plantes vocals to name one. First, you have to gain your 'chops' by developing some basic skills in the art of singing like key, vibrato, harmonics, sustaining notes and projection. Do your own thing ..personally, i'm tired of repitition. | |

If you've never heard of Storm and the Balls, Storm is an awersome preformer as well as a very sexy singer. Her music comprises of Jazz and hardrock.
Out of curiosity, which female singers do you consider hypocritical and why?

Hey Beth... According to the book I mentioned Im reading..
"When in New York Joan hosts a weekly program on Sirius Satellite Radio, Radio Revolution. She and Laguna (being Kenny Laguna) have signed more alternative bands to Blackheart Records......."
So shes still in the industry but helping other bands make it from the sounds of that ...

If you can handle Angela Gossow (female screamo) from Arch Enemy, go for it.
I used to be a fan of hers but I found some other bands that have female vocals that just completely crush her. She seems....stale i guess now.

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 2/14/2008 8:00:11 PM | Candace Night From Blackmore's Night has a amazing voice, she kind of has that mysterious Stevie Nicks appeal to her...first started with backing vocals For Deep Purple and her and Richie Blackmore Teamed up and formed Blackmore's Night , great band! Also that chick Wendy Day from Four Non blondes was cool...not too sure what ever happened to her .....she had some pipes ,and any guy could get away with singing their anthem "Whats Up"........... Lee Aaron WAS a "Metal Queen" and them gals in the band Toronto were awesome...Darby Mills was one powerful singer . yanno, reading this thread something was brought to my attention... I'm looking through my song list and it is in the thousands ,I barely have any females on it aside from Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks ...shame shame , me being a female who plays the guitar...I better start collecting , cuz we Gals can ROCK lol
Oh to mention theres this chick that fronted a band called Babe Ruth in the 70's...had a song called ..."The Mexican" that is one cool tune. But I always thought it was a male fronting , till I seen the video, woops!

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 2/15/2008 5:40:35 PM | | There is alot of great hard rock/ metal female singers out there. I really like Jarboe's stuff from her SWANS days and the album she did with Neurosis. | |
|
| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 2/16/2008 9:33:11 PM | If we're talking true metal - I have to go 100% with Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy. There is nothing warm and fuzzy about her vocals - pure power. I think the closest she's ever had to a love song was something dedicated to Satan - lol.
PS: LadysLament - Im a HUGE Storm and the Balls fan. I have a load of cool autographed stuff of theirs. I've seen them maybe a dozen times in Portland and Storm even sang Happy Birthday to me and bought me a beer.

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 2/17/2008 2:56:08 AM | | Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, Flyleaf, Paramour, Garbage- all sorts of great female vocals. It depends, of course, entirely on the genre of music you want to accompany. Personally, Lacuna Coil is a favorite of mine. | |
