Black Metal or Melodic Death Metal - it's all garbage!
...and...when did Death Metal ever have any melody?
Since pansies started to make it... actually that wouldn't be true because, if I'm not mistaken, a member (or two or something) from Carcass are in Arch Enemy.
There's plenty of great Black Metal out there... then again, there's also plenty of shit Black Metal... just like everything else.

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 8/28/2008 7:12:20 PM | Female rock/metal singers eh? My favorite.
I consider the fest female metal vocalist to be Within Temptation's Sharon den Adel. She can be powerful and aggressive one song, yet delicate and beautiful the next. Here's a few samples of Sharon's work The Howling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bqRn0rLq1c&feature=user Ice Queen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_GHx0dhkbc
I also like Nightwish's new vocalist Annette Olzen. Her voice is very powerful and not annoyingly operatic like Tarja Turunen's was (don't get me wrong Tarja's a great singer, but she held Holopanien's songwriting back whereas Annette's more versatile voice allows him to experiment). She has potential to become my new favorite, but den Adel has many solid albums under her belt, Annette is still a relative unknown. Amaranth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdZn7k5rZLQ Sahara: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvDBD_kNs6c
Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia is also very good. The song I've chosen as a sample from her is far from Lacuna Coil's most popular, but the haunting tone of her voice had me captivated for every single second. To Myself I Turn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtvsFSAD-5I

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 8/29/2008 11:58:24 AM | Tarja Turunen - singer of Nightwish. Liv Kristine - Leaves Eyes, Theatre of Tragedy. Lots of women can sing, but her voice have a unique sound about it that's sweet on the ears.
Of course can't forgot the gorgeous redhead Simone Simon from Epica. Great singer and preformer. Also worthy of mentioning - singer from Xandria, Sirenia, and Tristania. Edenbridge also have a nice singer, but I can't stand her voice for some reason.
Bad singer: Amy Lee. Just because she's a widely acknowledged singer doesn't mean that she's good. Popular opinion isn't necessarily right. ;-) Her voice suck on stage without the effect of vocal correcting programs. (The music is also pure suckage.)

Beyond true.
If you think Black Metal sucks, all you've heared is cheap immitation Black Metal. Like Dimmu Borgay or Cradle of Sh*t.
Check out Marduk, Carpathian Forest or Impaled nazarene, for starters.
Also, I think Erica Dunham, the person behind Unter Null deserves a mention on this thread. Whilst she's not Metal or Rock, her voice is brutal as, even without the electronic distortion.

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. I don't consider Evanescence metal, but man can Amy Lee sing. As far as power house female singers, I highly recommend Lita Ford and Ann Wilson. | |

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 5/27/2012 6:23:53 PM | I can't read through all of these to see who has been mentioned and who has not, but I happen to love talented female vocalists and am more than willing to make some suggestions.
First, I suggest Floor Jansen from After Forever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EsQPoKk9UQ&ob=av2n
Anna from Eluveitie has a superb voice as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1lXdLus2WI
Simone Simons, of Epic, of course. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csYBwZPCleY&feature=fvsr
Liv Kristine from Leaves' Eyes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b15yaPYNDRU
I'm sure there are others that I'm not remembering, but those popped into my head first.

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 5/29/2012 6:54:12 AM | Anathema - They're not metal now, but they started out as Death Metal. They still get reviewed on metal sites. Lee Douglas is the female vocalist of this vocal duo (sometimes trio), and her voice is fantastic. They just put out a new album, Weather Systems, and it's phenomenal.
Although she's nowhere near metal, my favorite female vocalist is Mary Fahl, previously of The October Project. She's since embarked on an EXTREMELY underrated solo career, and released such heartbreaking folk ballads as Going Home and Gravity. I suggest YouTubing both tracks, as you'll be blown away by her soulful melancholy voice.

Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia is also very good.
I saw them last month with Megadeth. I was about 15 feet from her.
I damn near pissed myself when she stepped out on to the stage. She's one of the most stunning women I've ever seen in my life.

| Female singers in hard rock/metal. Posted: 6/16/2012 7:02:10 AM | How about "Fanny"? Surely they were almost the forerunners of female hard rock bands? Granted, they did not have an absolute lead singer as such but both the Millington sisters could belt out the vocals. Well supported by Nicky Barclay and Alice De Buhr and, later, Suzi's Sis, Patti Quatro. The other unique thing for a "manufactured" band was that they could actually play their instruments and play them well. They had all served as session misicians for all sorts of top dogs.
There is a cracking video of them on Whistle Test back in 1971 on U tube and some more!
