Vinyl can get a little annoying in the quite passages, with a shit table and a well worn disc....but....strictly sound reproduction....it's the way to go....

buy one of them $40,000 tables that looks like a space station...and you will have NO NOISE! or I certainly hope not....

....and remember...your sound quality is only as good as your amplifier/speakers....I'm savin' for a tube amp...the only way to go with vinyl....

sometimes a 'scratchy' old record adds ambience to the listening experience, especially when listening to a folkie sing or something....sort of a flashback or something...

the surface noise and pops in stuff on a record are a part of the beauty of vinyl. One thing I noticed is there are a lot of people not aware that records are still being made, in fact lots of new stuff comes out on vinyl as well as great reissues from the past. Just because you cant buy a record from the mall or Best Buy dosent mean they dont make them anymore. I strongly reccomend shopping for music a local independent record store, not only will you find great vinyl but people who work there have a tendency to have great knowlegde of music

ahem ahem who pays for music???

I do and not ashamed to admit that. I know most people download music but I dont. My reason for not downloading music is that its too easy. I have stuff in my collection that I have been searching for for years and the thrill of finally getting it made the search worth while. Me personally I have prided myself on building an awesome record collection so I dont think I would sell anything, although I do admit I have a few things that I dont like anymore but I dont think I would part with them just the same. You all would be surprised just how much people like records still. After all there are record shows constantly and there are loads of older stuff that has yet to be reissued. Most of my friends are record fanatics(some even worked at record stores), and I have a few friends whose record collections is over 3,000.

Im really not gonna get into it here, because it would be pages long.

But CDs are actually inferior to vinyl 99% of the time.

SACDs, recorded on the correct equiptment are pretty good, but you also need SACD players to hear the improvement, which isnt much over a CD.

Analogue recording is better on vinyl. CDs do not pick up the full wavelength as vinyl does. And they were introduced because they are very cheap, and were supposed to last longer, which is already a joke.

So, y'know, dont make dumb statements, cos you look, well, dumb.

As for MP3s, theyre even worse, much farther down on the quality scale.

I am convinced new music formats only come out in order to make music more convenient for playback, not for quality of sound reproduction. I know this sounds clinical, but it is a fact. But, as technology evolves, so will the need to come up with new recording formats. Vinyl, as we know it, lasted from the 40's to the late 80's, so approximately 40 or 50 years. By far the longest available recording format. If CD's are on their way out, then that is only 25 years that they have been a format. Does this mean MP3's will have a market life of only 12 to 15 years?

I love cds because I like actually having the PRODUCT per se , not something intangible like an mp3. That doesn't do it for me and I think its bogus

I like vinyl for the collector factor. I like cd's for the sound quality factor. I have about 80 records (many are framed and on my walls) and about 600 cd's. I love my music. Sound quality to me is of the utmost of importance. I have spent about 4 years putting together one kick ass stereo system and it rocks. Love it

Vinyl does indeed sound terrific if you use a decent playback system. A 45 played on a kid's record player is not going to even come close to providing the same fidelity as a cd played even on a a cheap portable. I have both vinyl and cd (even 8tracks and reel to reels too) in my collection. Cd wins out for portability, and of course easier to make custom mixes and import stuff in to ipod's etc. But for serious listening, I'll take a well mastered vinyl over a cd.

I'm in the same boat as far as sound quality...consider this...Vinyl is way better for sound reproduction....all the surface noise and "pops" you get with vinyl playback IS NOT the sound of the record, it's a side effect of having friction in order to get the sound out.....

....listen to the actual information on the record and not the action of the needle exerting force on the surface...you'll see that a vinyl record sounds WAY better than a CD...I've said it before...it sounds closer to being live....REALLY LISTEN! slap on a LOUD record, the music will drown out the noise....and just listen....

The problem is that sometimes the surface noise can be louder than the music Paulchino. Do you ever listen to classical? The opening bars of the Verdi Requiem are so soft that you need a CD to appreciate it. That is the best example, but there are many others in classical music.

I agree records kick!!! I have 80 and cherish them. 600 cd's. I have framed about 25 records. I have heard records have a "warmer" sound. I haven't listened to one on my new system but there has to be many a plus to records as well. I would love to hear some opinions on this. I do love my cd's and a lot of them are remastered which is hard to beat

see that record on my profile? just bought it brand new...along with Dark Side of the Moon....not playing them again until I have at least a grand to drop on a table...complete with record mat, clamp, and a good tool to measure tracking weight.....
...and eventually a tube amp.....

yup....if the noise bothers you too much...by all means go with CD.....but vinyl holds a value to me that far surpasses the quality of a CD....a lot of it has to do with the novelty too...my entire Sabbath, Zeppelin, Floyd, and Yes CD collections are all japan replicas of the LP's....sound quality is f*cking fabulous....but I'd rather spin them on a good record player....

I agree Paulchino II. My records hold extreme sentimental value to me. Look at my pic and those are all framed records behind me. The stereo I have right now tally's in at around $10,000. I have Paradigm studio 100 V3's and matching center and surrounds. I won't go into details but I wonder how a record would sound on it with a kick ass turn table verses a disc. Back when I listened to records I didn't have near the system.

One piece of advise to you however is play your record and burn it onto a cd, then frame the record to protect it. Each time you play a record you wear it out just a tiny bit. That record on your pic is a fine piece. I'm starting to love this thread more and more.

That's understood. I don't play my records anymore so I decided to display their beautiful artwork and notch in history on the walls. If you ever do decide to frame them down the road, Wal-mart has frames for eight bucks. You can't beat that price. I understand your angle on it though. We all have our "ways" when it comes to the beautiful form of expression known as "music".
