| English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish or British? Posted: 7/2/2008 12:44:18 AM | Well, as an Englishman living in the U.S., I must admit to being ever so slightly peeved by being referred to as "a Brit". It seems very dismissive, offhand and shows a lack of knowledge/interest.
The conversation usually goes like this:
"Where you from? Australia? You're from Australia ain't ya." "No, I'm from England." "Oh, you're British!" "Er, yes, but I'm English". (after a brief, but intensive moment of confusion) "Well, that's a coincidence, I had a friend once that moved to Paris. You might now him."
If only I were joking...

I would NEVER say that I am European, Europe is completely separate from the UK, except for that dreadful tunnel which lets in thousands of illegal immigrants every year.
But Britain is a country in Europe, just because it is an island doesn't make it not part of the continent of Europe. Japan is part of Asia isn't it?
No-one has to refer to themselves as European, but if you are from a European country then you are! I find it bizarre that some people still have the attitude that Britain is somehow seperate.

i think its weird that some people living in Northern Ireland dont believe they are in Ireland, they believe they are in a differnt country called Britain
but they are in a country called Britain... whether you like it or not Northern Ireland is part of Britain and some people there feel "British" rather than "Irish"

So, so true!!
I was on holiday in Florida some years ago and got talking to a Texan gentleman.
Exactly the same "You're Australian ain't ya?" "No, I'm from England." Short pause while Texan brain cell kicks into gear.......... "Hey, that's near London ain't it?"
I didn't know whether to laugh, cry or just deck him!

ireland is not just an island it is also a country
So what ? America is not just a continent it is also a country.
Just try going onto one of the Canadian forums and saying something like:
"i think its weird that some people living in North America dont believe they are in America, they believe they are in a differnt country called Canada"
and see how well you are recieved.
