When you're on vacation and you meet foreign nationals do you say that you're British or do you get more specific?

am not going to read 11 pages... my simple answer is.. I am welsh... there for... I say Welsh not British....

no arguements... nothing wrong saying your British.. just like it known I am welsh not english... actually that is a lie.. I am half and half... but to me I am WELSH... that is all that matters

99% of time I'm Welsh
1% of time I'm British

depends on how easy it is to converse with the other person and their grasp of the "english " language

Though accidentally born in (at the time) West Germany - now part of the state/nation of the Federal Republic of Germany, father is from the country of Scotland, mother from the northern part of the island of Ireland which as a country is part of the state of The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Island (UK). I consider myself British.

Please note for accuracy the island of Ireland currently is 'shared' between two nations/states - the UK (as described above) and The Republic of Ireland aka Eire aka just Ireland. Reference to Ireland is often solely (incorrectly) to the state/nation as opposed to the island similar to using America to reference the nation/state of the United States of America (USA) only when it really refers to a large land mass that includes many nations/states e.g Brazil, Canada, Disneyland etc
The island of Great Britain contains 3 countries but these are not independant states/nations though perhaps many occupants may desire otherwise.

Here endeth lesson

"No, I'm from England."
Short pause while Texan brain cell kicks into gear..........
"Hey, that's near London ain't it?"

I have a whole list of these type of interactions.

I think one of the best was being asked what language they speak in England.
I believe they think I have this funny accent because English isn't my first language.

I am Scottish..born and bred. Always will be. I do not consider myself British. I have been asked this when abroad and i always correct the person asking and repeat that I am Scottish.

Each to their own and whilst i respect everyones right to be whatever...i simply view the whole 'British' thing as a farce.

totally agree.

the sooner we become independant the better (I'm English by the way). Theres nothing to lose (because we will still have the shared history and close ties) and everything to gain.

Prior to us shipping them out to Australia.

Please see above...another prime example of the Scot/Irish mix
This may be classed as too short but I cant thing of anything else to say on the subject prior to falling into a deep alcohol induced slumber
