| English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish or British? Posted: 5/20/2006 1:45:14 PM | If anyone asks as they have done when I am in the US, I always say I am English, for one it saves the next question of where and also England is where I was born. I would expect a Scots or Irish or Welsh person to say they come from their respective countries. I always wonder though why the Scots sing about how wonderful Scotland is from every country in the world except from Scotland lol. | |

If men of this Scepterd Isle can squabble so tritely over nity gritty bits of trivia, tit for tat style, it makes me despair for international relationships.
I look forward (not) to the next thrilling installment of the Anglo-Caledonian-Scrapathon.

ps there is no such language as Scottish
But theres Gaelic???
I was brought up to be apologetic about being English - for years I didn't even know when St George's day was, or what it signified. Can you imagine a country where its frowned upon to fly your national flag? I live in one....
Now, in the left wing, PC-dominated environement we are expected to live in (specifically in London, where the majority of the immigrant ethnic minorities seem to end up) I am, decidedly, ENGLISH, and proud of it.

| English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish or British? Posted: 5/20/2006 4:36:32 PM | Good on you.. can i be and Cornish British/ English... I still believe in all things British.. but I do feel ashamed when I visit other countries and the Brits are the rowdiest and loudest.. around. how do you overcome that? It is a sad fact that there are quite a few factions that let Britian down big time, I am always well mannered and ladylike, but the behavious of some of my fellow Brits when in other Countries leaves me to depair, they are drunk, rowdy, noisy and loud.. it's then that I feel ashamed and want to creep away with my tail between my legs, and it's not even anything to do with me, I'm a Cornish lass after all. | |

| English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish or British? Posted: 5/20/2006 4:50:09 PM | anthony.. youre right.,.. I saw that incorrect fact too.. coming from a Scots man saying there is no Scottish language, I thought it a tad odd thing to say. We have not only a wonderful common language -English- but a wealth of Celtic languages too. Welsh, Irish Scottish and Cornwall all have a gaelic languages.... incredible to listen to.. damned hard to learn. Im proud to be of such diversity in the British Isles.
Male posturing though.. huh, don't all female mammals have to witness this and roll eyes heavenwards with a sigh and a shrug?

Oh dear!
Here's a fact: this is what I said:
ps there is no such language as Scottish
that is a fact, there is no such language as "Scottish"
There are Scottish accents, but certainly not a "Scottish" language.
Fern, I'm surprised you didn't already know these facts
Well, at least you do now...........cool huh?

| English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish or British? Posted: 5/21/2006 4:40:39 AM | Your actually mistaken Soxx if you check up you will probably be surprised to find that there was a language called `Scots` which after Gaelic became the spoken language in Scotland for 400 years. Scotland national poet Robert Burns often wrote in Scots an example being the word Auld in "should auld acquaintence be forgot" | |

There is NO SUCH LANGUAGE AS SCOTTISH!
The 'Scots Language ' that you refer to mistakenly is in fact properly known as the "SCOTS DIALECT". Now, if you are not too pompous and are in fact willing to learn and be educated, go to your dictionary or your beloved wikipedia and look up the word language then look up the word dialect and lo' and behold you'll find that you have indeed confused the issue in your own mind. I don't expect you to apologize, but perhaps in the future, you'll do a little more thorough research before you make accusations about me, fair enough? Have a lovely Sunday mate!
