I really dont see anything wrong with someone having a certain size criteria. Not all men like big, small, atheletic or toned women. Everyone is entitled to their own preferrences on who they want to be with. I am far from being "Model Material" and yes I get alot of compliaments about me,but that doesnt matter to me just for the fact I hear it ALL the time. What DOES matter to me is that I have something in common with that special someone. I have seen men on here that are way out of my league and to damn superficial and fake. I dont want no macho Vin Diesel wanna be. I dont mind tall and big men but I dont want to be with someone who does NOT take care of themselves. I want a hard working man who can take care of me physically, emotionally, mentally, lovingly, caringly, honestly, and most of all RESPECTFULLY just as I would be doing the SAME for HIM!!!
Alot of women are extremely picky too. I have seen a few profiles that pretty much say YOU MUST BE A DOCTOR.LAWYER OR SUCH to get with me.! I don't like stuff like that well I have news for people I have alot of flaws and I am not perfect looking at all. I have been around and seen alot of "SUPERFICAL,HIGH FALUTANT.AND IGNORANT profiles on here and I dont think I will be on here too much longer. I will say this though if everyone is gonna come down on someone just because A MAN or WOMAN that wants an AVERAGE SIZED WOMAN or MAN then I think you all need to do a MORAL INVENTORY OF YOURSELVES BEFORE TAKING SOMEONE ELSES PERSONAL INVENTORY AND NOT TO MENTION...THERE'S ALWAYS GONNA BE SOMEBODY OUT THERE FOR SOMEONE!!! GREAT POST KILO....

I apologize that I did not read all of the posts! However ... I agree with "Cajun" ... this post makes a lot of sense to me since I fall into that "40's to 60's" category he spoke of.
That's a hard one. When you have a woman (young lady) in her early 20's it's a different average than one in her 40's to 60's. We have to be realistic in the fact that not only the women, but, the men change in shapes too. So, average is only in the eyes of the beholder and what age the beholder might be. I know this does not answer your question, but, it might help on other people responding and their age groups.

I am 5'3" and weight about 135 lbs. At the age 57, I understand that's not bad at all. I admit to having a little (and it is little, but still there) baby belly. I have not met any man my age who considers me for "fat" ... most tell me I look really good for my age.

I still have a definable waist, my breasts do not sag (poor little things ... they have always been small but "perky" except the 4 times I was breastfeeding), butt does not sag and I've been told I have nice legs.

I don't wear jeans ... just don't care for them, but I do wear a size 10 - 12 in slacks. I am told (by most men) I should consider myself "average" and so that's what I put down.

A better question would have been whats a healthy size for females? Yes I am a full figured lady , it would be healthier for me to be thinner, however It makes me sad that we still live in such a shallow society when the girth of a persons body is more important then the strength of their character.

LOL@gah .. that gave me a good laugh.

at the height of her popularity, Marolyn Monroe wore a size 13. The average size for a women in the states is a 12. I think that about says it all

That sounds about right. I'm an 11-12-13, and most other women and guys say I wear whatever weight I have well, but I know I could always stand to lose 10. At this point, it's not just Americans that are getting bigger - -Europeans, both in the UK and on the Continent are steadily gaining weight. Soon the fashonistas of the world will have to redraw their designs for the rest of us, instead of the boyishly built models they use.

I had my size/build listed as "average," but I just changed it to thin (after reading what most people are saying). Although I don't think of myself as thin, I guess when you say average, people expect someone to be bigger. Although I exercise regularly and have some muscle, I wasn't sure if athletic would be correct either. I'm a size 6 - so I guess I can get away with it. I try to be as truthful as possible even though many people have old pictures or pictures that look nothing like them.

I'm 5'4" and 140, and I think I'm fat. Why? Because I have always been a size 8, then I got a thyroid condition, and lived with a junk food junkie for four years, and now at 55, I'm 140 and can't seem to lose it. I'll lose that famous first five pounds, but never anymore.

I have actually had other women tell me I'm "tiny"! Next to who????

I guess going by the weight standards scale, I am average, and I put that on my profile, but believe me, if I could get back down to 125, I'd be deliriously happy!

All I can say is, that most of the women I have met, who said they were average were quite overweight. The ones who said a few extra pounds... well, they were pretty big.
Why don't they have height and weight, instead of this average stuff, but I guess that won't work, lots of people won't even post a picture.

what is truly sad about this discussion is that the 2 previous women before me each ended up with a distorted view of themselves. one had to change her profile to thin because as we all know (or have read here) average on this site is overweight. the other sounded like she was leaning toward a few extra pounds when in fact, she is not. another woman ( who normally is vey insightful) stated that we are too preoccupied with a person's weight and not their character. unless there is a medical reason for being overweight, being overweight is a character issue. people (men and women) spend all kinds of time keeping a clean house or doing a great job at their job or a nice yard etc. etc. but don't have enough respect for themselves to take better care of themselves. it is far easier in our society to "lower the bar" AGAIN, to rationalise adinfinitum that being overweight is ok...normal. i'm not a gym rat or a health nut but i do watch what i eat BECAUSE i don't want to be overweight. i loooove doughnuts, pizza, and ice cream but i don't eat them very often because i don't want to be overweight. in my opinion, self discipline is a character issue. finally,( believe it or not) for every shape woman, there is a guy who loves that shape. alot of us guys prefer a woman that isn't skinny, but isn't fat either. some guys prefer that their woman has a couple extra pounds (something to hang on to) but not fat. some guys like a woman with alot of extra pounds. if people were a little more realistic about their size, they would only attract people actually LOOKING for that size. i'm 5'6" tall, using the weight lies and applying them to height, i could tell some woman i was 6' tall and expect her to not be disappointed when she met me using the logic that i felt like i was six feet tall, therefore i was. it's BS and everybody knows it. besides i would've missed out on the women that wanted a guy my height and missed her. any relationship that starts with a lie will end with a lie. and that's the truth.

You know, you may be right about one thing. Some people have a distorted body image, but in my case, I have a reason. I've done internet dating before, and every time I sent someone a full length pic, they didn't reply. The ones that did seemed to be only after one thing. It frightens me, makes me want to not meet the men who write to me, because I don't want the rejection.

I will say that the gentlemen who have responded to me have not even ASKED for a full length pic, so I'm thinking it doesn't matter much to them. I'll definitely send them one before I meet them though, so there is no "awkward moment" when one of us wants to escape.

http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm

Lets see now according to 'official' charts.....I am above the midpoint national average in height, midpoint average in weight, for my age group and gender, however I am above average in the peoples choice of ideal body size, but not if you include my height.

Average seems to have at least several meanings :
1- average of height and weight and age according to actual statistics on people
2-average as in not fat, not skinny, of course those are very personal in definition
3-average according to what specialists consider an ideal as to health and longevity
4-average as in what you actually notice in the people around your area

Who was it that said there are lies, dam lies and statistics?

Enjoy being average people, whatever that may mean to you!

The term used as stating one's physical appearance as being "average" is a mystery to me. I look at it as a "surprize package", either being slightly overweight to obese.
There's no mystery about one stating being "slender" or "athletic".
I think the term "average"- meaning is used as a buffer zone; some kind of acceptence level that seems to make people more desirably "datable".

I'd say that women should have a head, with hair on one and and feet on the other. Now in between should be the necessary accessories to make them interesting. Big enough to hold and soft enough to cuddle. And yes, cleavage is a good thing but that's just one guys opinion.

I'm not sure how this works, new to this thread thing. I just wanted to post my opinion. Here's the deal: most folks do NOT understand the concept of a 'fixer-upper'. There's an old saying that Women marry men expecting to change them, they do NOT; and men marry women not wanting a change, and the women change. One of my cousins is an example of a phenomena I call 'baiting the hook.' The woman is single, exercises and diets like crazy - my cousin went from 230 lbs to an unbelievably gorgeous size 3; made a lovely bride, and was back up to 230 within two years. Men do this, too. Hey, that wavy hair might be gone tomorrow.

I think the movie "Shallow Hal" should be mandatory for all dating persons to watch. Member the part where the oh so beautiful woman is seen as a skank by Hal when he is looking at the soul? Everyone has issues, it seems. And the bottom line is; love is where you find it.

Now, do I have some issues? Yup. I am 5'6", I usually wear 3" heels, and I have a psychic scar from being THE tallest, curviest person-- 35-21-36 (including the teachers!) in the 5th grade. I think the 5th grade is when a person's body image is formed. So, I think of myself as huge/tall. I have a body type not favored by the gay fashion designers - which is, basically, Zena after two babies and twenty years of modern life- aka - not an hourglass - more like an hour and 1/2 glass. Or, Marilyn Monroe type, except that I spent some time working out with weights, so I have muscles. I feel like Godzilla next to a lot of people, even though I am the size 12 discussed on here as average. BTW - today's size 12 was size 14 when I was a teen and a size 9. But you know, the older we get, the less fish there are in our sea. When everyone else was busy changing partners in my late 30's early 40's, I was busy raising my kids. And the major thing I've found out from on line dating is: Hey, you got on here to 'phish.' You have to cast your net wide, and check out all that comes up. The pix and the profiles mean nothing until you meet the person; even phone calls mean nothing. I guess one could sort by some basics: like, I love country life, I must have folks who like animals, horses and dogs, specifically - you know. Basic personality things. I am not into drugs, too much alcohol, risky sex. I like the profiles I have seen where folks are happy to get to meet so many different persons. That's always a good thing. I wish you all good fishing.

It's probably just my Virgoan practicality talking, but it would be much easier if we just used Body Mass Index (BMI) as a descriptor rather than adjectives such as average, slender, etc.

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is normal. Anything lower is underweight, 25.0 - 29.9 is overweight and 30.0 and higher is obese. To find your, just search BMI calculator and you will find an online calculator.

The obesity myth, Paul F. Campos,...The obesity epidemic: Science and Ideology, Michael Gard/Jan Wright,...Fat Politics: The Real Sotroy behind America's Obesity epidemic, J. Eric Oliver

There are more but these are critics of the standards and stats currently in vogue. Many of the stats we refer to for health are directly funded by the weight loss industry. Many of the 'scales' are set to reflect preference rather then health.
ON BMI
30.0 to34.9 is mildly obese 34.9 to 39.9 moderate and severely is above 39.9. Independant researchers have stats showing that aging adults in the mildly obese category are actually living longer healthier lives with less age related illnesses affecting this group.

So if this is indeed true; that people in the 30.9 to 34.9 are the healthiest, then somebody please define obese. I like most people atribute poor health to the word.

The average size for a woman who is 5 foot 9 is different than one who is 5 foot 1

I judge a womans size by her body type. I have dated short women who didnt work out and even though they weren't fat they had no muscle tone. I have dated women taller and although not thin by any means, they were in good shape.

For me, I go for a gal who is a little shorter than me, say 5 foot to 5 foot 6 and in decent shape such that she at least goes to the gym a few times to do something for herself fitness wise, health wise and looks wise.

It's not so much what you are dealth with in life, it's what you do with it.

I recently spoke to a woman online here that had only 1 picture, a little fuzzy and it seemed like she might be a little overweight and when we did speak, she never went to the gym, gave me excuses as to why she is too busy and "after all" she is 48 what do I expect ?

I expect (as my preference) to meet a gal who cares about herself to take the time to do whatever it takes to look good and be healthy... This BS that we don't have the time is something we allow ourselves to believe. We have 24 hours in the day and 168 hours in a week. they are YOUR hours, you can DO what you want with them.

I say, take the time to eat right (for the most part) drink water, exercise and enjoy yourself, such that we wind up looking good and feeling good in the same timeframe.

We ain't getting any younger, but we CAN get better...

All the best, Michael

By the way, regarding Marilyn Monroe's sizes, here they are:

Measurements( studio's claim): 37-23-36 (inches)
Measurements (dressmaker's claim): 35-22-35 (inches)
Hair: Natural Brown, dyed Blonde
Eyes: Blue
Height: 5 feet, 5½ inches
Weight: 118 pounds
Dress size: 12
Pant Size: 8
Shoe Size: 7AA (US)
Bra Size: 36D

She sounds good to me and I wouldn't say she is average at all

I think what the original post eluded too, was women whom claim to be average and realy aren't.

I've seen many profiles who claim to be average and clearly are over-weight. The problem for me lies in the claim not the truth. If a women claims shes average and really isn't even close, then later states that she wants an Honest man....well thats a contradiction in terms.

You can't lie about your weight and demand honesty from someone else.

As I stated in post 90 the difficulty seems to be in what we define as average:

2-average as in not fat, not skinny, of course those are very personal in definition

So what is your take on what average means?
