Personally, I believe that if the average dress size in the US is a 14 then the average woman is very much over weight... but then we already know most all men and women in the US are indeed overweight. The problem with adjusting our standards to fit what is, is that we ignore what should be. | |

Posted: 4/12/2008 8:18:53 AM | The easiest way to determine if our weight is appropriate to our height is by using a Body Mass Index Calculator (just google BMI Calculator). You just enter your height and weight and click.
If the result is less than 18.5 you are underweight, 18.5-24.9 normal weight, 25.0-29.9 overweight and 30.0 or higher obese. As long as the person is an adult the formula works for men and women regardless of age or body type.
For me, I find that when I get down to 21.3 my friends tell me I'm too thin and above 25.2 I feel I'm too heavy. Right now, I'm at 24.6 and dieting down to 22.9 (about 11 more pounds) so I would say my weight is average.
Not subjective at all. No "fudge" factor (pun intended). Just enter the numbers and click. | |

Posted: 4/12/2008 10:04:43 AM | I have to disagree with that chart. When I retired from the USAF, I was at 210lbs. I had a 34" waist, 19" biceps. According to the Air Force charts, I was only a few pounds from being overweight. If you take a person that lifts with his/her legs and the thighs and calfs are muscle, that would make you weigh more, but, not have fat. At one time, I had to buy pants and have them altered to fit. Seems that my thighs were too large for the cut of the pants. That's why (personal experience) that I disagree with those type charts.
Now, I'm getting older, not exercising the same because of an injury, and it seems that my muscle mass has redistributed itself without my permission LOL. I might fit into that chart now, but, did not fit into it a few years ago. The chart also does not take into consideration bone structure, build, etc.
The charts used a few years ago said that I should have topped the scales at no more than 180-185lbs. Heck, at 195lbs and running my first 1 1/2 mile run in the military, I came in second out of 50 runners. I was in fantastic shape and according to the charts, I should have not had that extra weight.
Without taking measurements from head to toe, those charts are meaningless. | |

Not an authority on that, but, I did manage physical fitness and weight management for my military squadron for 5 years. The question here is "what is average". May I say it again, the charts do not take into consideration many factors in weight.
As far as curing cancer, being sarcastic is not effectively contributing to the subject. You gave a link to a chart. I gave personal experience in dealing with such charts. I also just gave you my experience in the subject and the charts. Your chart would have a body builder overweight. You can have a person with thin arms and legs and a beer belly on the height and weight charts that would seem to be in contrast with the "average or normal". | |

Look up Dr. Ernie Bodai, he created the first fundraising stamp in history, the women's breast cancer stamp. He's also trying to get his men's stamp out there. Support it and him and contact the man. Amazing human being. If you're a guy, espeically, you don't have the same dialogue women do with your doc about your health issues and I say that because all doctors tell me this in regard, especially to cancer. I've lost too many male friends because they thought things would pass or whatever would go away and then find out too late.
Back to topic of fat vs. thin... last time I tried on a size 5 or 7 it was actually a 0 (anorexic) or also known as a non-to a young teen size. In other words, the fashionistas promote eating disorders. No matter your weight, love who you are, no easy task and don't let some bloody machine tell you what's what or another person unless your doc says, "Need to add or lose weight due to health reasons."
Is there a post on men's sizes? Not height.. weight? LOL Let's have one on size of his head, with the little guys next to him. HA | |

Give me a linebacker or teddy bear type any day of the week and I don't care if he describes himself as thin, average, few extra pounds or majorly fluffy...it's all good. It's also highly likely that his character, personality, disposition and what he deems important in life is more beautiful than the likes of those who have a serious distaste for real women with curves and instead prefer female bodies that look similar to 10 year old boys.

Hmmm.. Debs.. now my mum has a full figure and Rubensesque, which I think is beautiful but I also find that many women complain about their backs and it's kept this slender one from getting fake boobs to make a mate happy... my son's father was a big man, not talking height.. as I've said on another post, I fell in love with his heart, not his height or weight.. funny how that works when we put beer belly's (seen women with those) aside and stop making a slender or slim women into a little boy. That's like saying a larger woman is a Shrek's mate... 'eh? Simpler put, call me skinny, I call ya fat, same insult and I wouldn't call ya that. And muscle? haha Depends on where you're talking it's at.. Ooops.. lol | |

I put prefer not to say, because one man's fat dog is another man's few extra pounds or average size dog... I do disclose to those who might be interested in meeting me that I have a shape; but don't have what most consider to be "in-shape" type of shape.
I certainly can respect that people have preferences and I don't have any issue with my body size or shape not "fitting into their preference" (yes, pun intended) 
However, I do take issue when people are ignorant and make generalizations or assumptions that just because a person isn't a particular size or weight that it's all due to lack of willpower, over eating or being lazy...
While SOME people may not be their ideal weight because of such types of behaviors, not ALL people indulge in those types of "behaviors". Some people have metabolic or hormonal disorders so no matter how little they eat or how active they are, they're not going to be able to attain a weight that is remotely close to "average" based on whatever medical chart you like to use... Maybe, that person is on medication which has added weight to them-seen it happen to friends-went from a size6/ 8 to a 12/14 due to medication issues-not over eating issues or maybe they were in an accident and can't be as physically active and have gained weight because of not being able to do what they previously did...
So the Next time you want to insult a "fat chick"...just remember, that person is most likely someone's mother, sister or daughter... and ask yourself, if my mother, sister or daughter had weight issues, would I want someone to treat them with such ignorance and disdain simply because they aren't "average" sized.... food for thought  | |
