| How people age differently Posted: 3/5/2007 5:41:49 PM | I am by far not convinced that genetics is a part of it. I was asked how old I was by a couple of guys I work with every day and have for five years. I asked each to tell me how old they thought I was. Now at the same time there was a woman standing there that knew my age and she had first thought i was 35 to 36. One of the guys told me he thought I was 33 to 35 the other 35 to 39. i told them thx and asked the lady to tell them how old I was. when she told them i was 55 they about flipped out. see both of them don't work as hard or as much as myself and can't keep up with me. both are in thier early 20s. now on the part of genetics well there is where i am not convinced. see my brother is two years younger than myself. over his early years he drank a lot and in extreme amounts during his time in the service. he was also into drugs quite heavy for a while until he married. that he dropped cold turkey when his wife told him flat out if he wanted to marry her he had to stop drugging it. Now here is the thing on the genetics i spoke of my doctor asked my brother if he was my father one time when i was in the ER doing a breathing treatment for asthma. my brother said no and that he was my brother. doc looked at him and said must be his older brother my brother just looked at him and then said no younger. doc appologized to him and said he better quit while he is striking out. my brother went home and trimmed his beard and hair then dyed them both. then we were standing working and his 16 year old daughter asked me andthis is a quote. "Uncle Bush why do you look so much younger than daddy?" I smiled and told her because i am better looking is all. a lot of things can be reasons for one to age differently than another. I just never thought about being old and still don't. I try to do any and all i ever did except run since doing so plays havoc on my asthma. however if the need does rise to do so i can and will as long as i have my little oxygen bottle called inhaler and i go no where with out it.

| How people age differently Posted: 3/5/2007 6:57:09 PM | OMG.......Rossal and DestinySoulmate...my two favourite people on the site!
I absolutely agree that aging is governed by your attitude to life. I smoked until 1983 and quit cold turkey....I only drink light beer and white wine, I love laughing and dancing (in that order) and since I separated from my "old" husband...(who is two years younger than me) I am having a blast. I've been told that my skin is too young to have been around for 60 years!
Destiny....I wish my Mom was still here at 86...(My Dad is, at 88)
You guys are like my twin sisters or something.... everything you say resonates with me......
love ya both!

| How people age differently Posted: 3/5/2007 11:44:23 PM | When I was home taking care of my Mom, my sister and I were in the kitchen when a neighbor came over with a jar of peaches. She looked at us both, then said: So which of you is the older? I wasn't unhappy with the question, but my sister, who's sixteen years younger than me was, lol! Guess who's the smoker?
Me. So much for preconceived ideas, eh? .

| How people age differently Posted: 3/6/2007 8:46:10 AM | | I think it's a combination of genetics, life experiences and our own self-destructive ways. My parents are in their 70's and look 50. When I meet people they ask if I lied about my age. Nope, I'm 45 and enjoying every minute of it. | |
|
| How people age differently Posted: 3/6/2007 3:50:10 PM | | I think we all look younger nowadays than people from previous generations. We live longer too. Our forebearers would suffer more physical pain and distress to their bodies because they didn't have the products we have today. I think having more skin-protecting cosmetics, over-the-counter pain relievers, tooth-whiteners and other beautifying products have done a great job of improving the looks of the lot of us. | |

| How people age differently Posted: 3/6/2007 3:59:36 PM | well part is genetic and the other is the lifestyle. My mom has beautiful skin at 75. One the major hic...is the sun. Of course, smoking, driking, exercising, diet etc... The second major hic... is how we look at life itself. La joie de vivre. | |
|
| How people age differently Posted: 3/6/2007 7:46:03 PM | | La joie de vivre is everything. It's all genetics. If we look like our mom then we will have her genetics, into our "twilight" years. I am comfortable with that. :) My mum was lovely and happy to be in her likeness. But, I don't take any precautions which might do me in..... I enjoy LIFE! The old adage that reaching home base in not so mint condition holds true for me. | |

People say all sorts of outrageous things about age. As a career physiologist, perhaps I see things somewhat differently and so just listen and (usually) keep my big yap shut.
Nonetheless, it is quite true that some people age a great deal differently than others. While in their early 80s, my parents looked a lot better than some people in their 50s. At 95, my mother still looks a lot better than many women in their 60s.
Today, everyone seems to want to look younger. Not me. I earned every damn one of the grey hairs I have and I’m keeping them! Okay, I’m not into wrinkles yet, but neither is anyone else I know my age.
A few years ago I did a PSA spot for TV. The makeup gal died my hair and applied so much makeup that I looked forty on television. They still run that damn spot sometimes and people still look at me and laugh, cause it bothers me about the cosmetic deception. Women do that, but men are not supposed to. . . .
Yes, I would say that part of looking good is genetics. Some is attitude, though. Also, when we hit the gym every morning, I see people my age who are physically working to look good and it shows in everything they do.

| How people age differently Posted: 3/7/2007 5:28:47 AM | We've all heard the expression....
It's not what's on the outside that counts. It's what's on the inside.
I've heard or read this statement and I've understood it to mean that having a healthy emotional makeup, personality & intentions, and/or spirituality (whatever that means to you) determines health and it shows on the outside of a person. I'm not talking about genetics, pre-disposed conditions or diseases caused by environmental exposures or accidents. I'm referring to emotions affecting health and how we age.
I've read some studies. "They" say that there is a direct co-relation between negative/positive emotions and how we deal with them and the effect these emotions have on our bodies. I've met people who look great on the outside but suffer from disease on the inside. And, these particular studies indicate that the diseases are manifested because of unresolved emotions. Has anyone else heard or read about these studies? I think I'll go and " GOOGLE" to look for this info......and refresh my memory 'cause my memory isn't what it used to be.

| How people age differently Posted: 3/7/2007 5:49:43 PM | Well I am sure some think my pictures are 10 years old or older - nope.
I met a guy the other day that was 6 years older than me and looked about 45. He was a real small guy.
Oh and it is not always smoking. I’ve smoked for 50 years and that guy had too.

| How people age differently Posted: 3/10/2007 11:52:50 AM | When I lived in Florida there was a patient in the orthopaedic clinic I worked in that had the face of a teenaged angel, smooth, without a wrinkle. She dressed like a teenager in the latest "kid fashion"-- her hands and her neck gave away though that she was in her late 60s. Great cosmetic surgeon, but there is only so much you can do. I hear now, though, that they are working on cosmetic surgery on hands!
our society has become so "youth oriented" and so on that when I see a profile that says "I look younger" "I think younger" etc. it sort of turns me off.
My mom's face is as smooth and unblemished as an angel--she had good genetics and worked inside, didn't do much outside in the sun, covered up like a burka when she did go out.
I rode horses without a hat starting at age 4, baked in the African sun, and had different genetics. So I have actually "aged faster" facially than she has, BUT, her bones are turning to sawdust and mine are strong and I am active. She can barely walk from sedentary lifestyle. I wear sun screan now and have for 10 yrs, but the damage was done before I was 30 and didn't start showing up until I was 50. Wish I had listened to my grandmother and covered up, but am not ashamed of how I look, I keep myself clean and neat, my hair styled, and go on with life. If that turns someone off, oh well...I am proud of the wisdom I have developed over the years and think I am a better person inside than I was when I was a beautiful young (and very DUMB) lady.

| How people age differently Posted: 3/12/2007 1:17:36 PM | I think it could be all of the above.....but a person with no bad habits in their lifetime...smoking, drinking, suntanning, eating junk food.....may look younger, but are they HAPPY??? Give me happiness anyday. Smoking is the only one I didn't do, and yeah, the wrinkles caught up with me....such is life.....
I also think that wrinkles around the eyes from laughter, are incredibly sexy.
I also think that men of a certain age should just shave off all that gray hair on the face, that is TRULY aging. It can make them look not only out-of-date, but in their 70's instead of their 50's. Sometimes I have a hard time believing a guy is the age he claims when he has a full, bushy white beard. (eastsideeddie..please don't flame me!)
Recent polls have shown that US women are not into beards.
Ladies? Your opinions on gray beards? I, for one, happen to ABSOLUTELY LOVE beards...of any color....doesn't make them look old OR out of date....just sexy. I'm glad MY guy is a "Fuzzy-Face"
FYI....Eastside Eddie is back....post away.....

| How people age differently Posted: 3/13/2007 2:25:16 PM | Personally, I prefer completely clean shaven. There is something very sexy about a guy who shaves his head and his face. Although I do prefer soft hair on the chest....

| How people age differently Posted: 3/13/2007 8:14:59 PM | I definitely think genetics, and people take care of themselves a lot more...saying that i smoke still love then sun, to much sugar, love a drink occasionally love roast dinners, get stressed, i think i look great on a good day | |

| How people age differently Posted: 3/14/2007 5:10:56 AM | "horselady48 I quit smoking a while back but am sneaking a couple a night & have smoked all of my life from a young age. "
Umm... sorry to break the news to you, but YOU DID NOT QUIT SMOKING! And you must look darn old. I looked much younger than my years for most of my adult life, but at 52 the saggy skin seems to be coming on. oh well. One close friend wants me to grow the beard back so I'm not scratchy when we kiss. But , I'm not so sure; it is very grey. I believe we age ourselves with our attitude. If you still have some passion and excitement about getting out of bed in the morning then you will seem youthful. But, if you are stuck in old patterns of thought , activity, and feel that the best years are past you then, yes, I guess you are done.

| How people age differently Posted: 3/14/2007 10:50:17 AM | i think lots of things help to keep you young... not just one thing. .most peeps are shocked at my age i do look a lot younger, even if i do say so myself..

| How people age differently Posted: 3/14/2007 4:02:21 PM | | For myself, I'd say genetics has played a large roll. I've been told I look either younger or much younger than my age. I dismiss all the other factors for personal reasons. | |
