| why? Posted: 7/5/2006 6:33:36 PM | If you are having a hard time finding a job, I am not surprised. There are not a lot of jobs here....unless you are willing to work for peanuts. I was born and raised here and am not particularly proud of my state; 1) lack of employment; 2) one of the states where taxes are outrageous;and 3) (and this one is personal)...the long gray days of winter are depressing.
that's just my opinion...

| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/6/2006 4:57:36 AM | | HI YA BOSS; I live waaaay up in the booney's, far from the city life, but I do know that FEDX is always hiring. They school you, put you up and feed you for the 2-3 wk course. Then once you get your foot in the door, it's possible you could transfer anywhere they need help, be it in Mi. or another state. Just a suggestion. And they do have good insurance and retirement plans as well. Good luck! | |

| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/14/2006 8:40:52 PM | | I've been looking at Mlive.com, and they a lot of the good jobs seem to be apart of an employment agency. So I have to GO there, and pay $250 for them to find me a job, and then I can't look anywhere else, but on site at the jobs offered, apply to them, whatever I want. Can't do it remotely. Located in Lansing btw. This is becoming a pain in the ass. I have a friend in Jackson who would go look for me, but making that commute often can get costly! | |

| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/15/2006 3:18:29 AM | Say yes to Michigan! Our state is great from shore to sandy shore! We have the Great Lakes (4 of them), fun things to do in the cities, fun night life, great beaches, and national and state forests. It's the home of President Ford, Henry Ford, Eminem, Montgomery Ward, and the actor who played Mini Me. Also, our governor is from Canada. | |
|
| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/15/2006 4:03:09 AM | Personally I don't like the governor being from Canada....she wants us to take all of thier garbage~I hope that idea has been scrapped by now ha ha. You forgot Kid Rock, MOTOWN, the Wings, and Colonel Potter.
OP, don't use MLive, use Michigan Works. They have several base offices, one in Niles, one in Muskegon, and I think you mentioned the one in Lansing. There are also a lot of jobs on Monster, depending on what you're looking for. We are in the midst of a heat wave right now, so you should be right at home! Minus the tornadoes. lol

| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/15/2006 2:51:28 PM | | I not only would like to move out of this state (MI) because I feel it is a very expensive state to live in, full of low paying jobs and about a 7% unemployment rate at the moment (the highest in the country), I might even consider moving out of this country. We have a govener (D-MI--Jenifer Grandholm--from Canada), who likes to put the hurt on people that are allready struggeling, with all kinds of laws that are designed to get as much revenue as possible from people that are allready poor, just because they broke a traffic rule or something. That is a big way the states trys to stay afloat today, since many of the manufacturing jobs have disappeared. IMO, and many other people who moved here from another state---this is a depressed state. I live in a city now (Grand Rapids), and I have never felt so---under control. Myself---I don't like the place much, and unless I find a good gal to ease the pain--I will move to live life more free, and be able to keep more of the money that I work hard for. | |

| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/15/2006 5:52:14 PM | | its VERY hard to get into the prison. all the testing and shit. you gotta have a masters to make 14 bucks an hour **** that | |
|
| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/15/2006 6:39:46 PM | | It's not hard at all to get into the prison. You can get a job there by taking 5 VERY easy criminal justice classes at a local community college, and all you really have to do after that is do your academy. What's hard is getting in on first shift. 9 times out of 10, maybe even 10 times out of 10, no one starts on first shift. Sure you start at the bottom, but they move quite rapidly through the ranks and get raises a lot. It's a stable, fairly well paid job with excellent benefits (which you really can consider part of your salary, as some people are paying out the butt for insurance now). It's just not for everyone. | |

| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/15/2006 6:51:14 PM | | Stihl Chainsaw (German company) is hireing in Virginia Beach--putting in a new building--again. $10,000 relocation fee, and sets you up with a realitor to get situated. You won't find that in any Michigan manufacturing facility. Why would anyone want to work in a Prison? Most jobs are like a prison anyway, and I would not want to associate with the people there. | |
|
| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/15/2006 7:14:41 PM | ^^ I'm just saying...people were encouraging him to get a job there, but no one really knew what it entails or what its' about. We have three here, and I know a lot of people that are employed there, so I was just trying to be helpful.
They would probably have tons of people relocating to VA Beach if they advertised this in winter. lol

| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/18/2006 12:18:52 AM | | I actually don't know alot about Governor Granholm. That tends to be true with democrats favoring higher taxes, though. It seems the further left the democrat, the higher the taxes. As for her being governor, I don't know as much as I should. I'd rather have lower taxes than higher taxes, though. I think most people would agree with that. Whenever taxes are raised, the economy takes another notch down. LOL, sorry to get all political on everyone. | |
|
| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/18/2006 12:22:14 AM | | Also, isn't one of the members of the group Styx from Michigan (the Niles/Berrien Springs area)? I think the movie star Sinbad has relatives in Benton Harbor too. Just some more random facts. LOL! | |
|
| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/18/2006 3:13:13 AM | | If we're getting political....let's go ahead and talk about 'Democrats favoring high taxes'. Have you thought about why she had to raise them? Because our republican governor before her put us in such a sorry state that NOONE going into that office had any other choice. Bah. I think we also left out Uncle Teddy from out who's who list. | |

| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/18/2006 6:52:07 AM | | ^^^ And Bob Segar lived about 5 miles from (if even that far) from my old house. The little girl who played Darla in The Little Rascals lived down the road here too. | |
|
| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/25/2006 3:28:12 PM | | Doesn't Ted Nugent live in Concord? | |
|
| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/25/2006 7:02:55 PM | | I dunno...he has a ranch somewhere near Bitely I think. Did you find a job? | |
|
| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/26/2006 10:22:17 AM | Unfortunately the economy in Michigan generally and Jackson specifically stinks. The main employer is the State Prison which casts somewhat of a pall over the area. The industrial base seems to be moving out as soon as it can find a landing zone in Mexico or Asia. There have been several big closings recently. I've never been able to figure Jackson out. It seems like a fairly big town but it's underserved by shopping, restaurants and culture. Lots and lots of little hick bars though. I haven't had much luck meeting people since I've moved to the county about 5 years ago. Maybe I just need someone to sell the place to me and show me it's good side. On the plus side taxes and real estate are low and the countryside is very pretty and easy to get to. I-94 and 127 make it easy to commute elsewhere. Johnsay | |

| Moving to MI! Posted: 7/26/2006 12:46:22 PM | Go with job searching on Monster.com. There are also a ton of agencies (temp and direct hire) in lower Michigan that can find you a job without having to pay a fee for the service.

| Moving to MI! Posted: 8/11/2006 9:28:00 PM | | Well I just got back from being in Jackson for a week. Didn't have much luck. Signed up with a job placement agency, and found a few little jobs here and there hiring. Nothing to fancy, but paid enough to get by. I was kinda surprised in how many places I saw that were hiring. Last time I was up there, there wasn't many, and just like all of you are saying, there's not many places to work. Non of the places I saw were listed in the paper, but they had "now hiring" signs up. Don't really know what to make of it, heh. But I'm still pushing for it! | |

| Moving to MI! Posted: 8/12/2006 6:17:00 AM | I moved to the Upper Peninsula about 4 years ago, and well, jobs are hard to find. But you know what? They are hard to find everywhere. My brother lives just south of Madison WI and it took him 2 YEARS to get the job he wanted with a college education. Its not just MI. MN has the same issues, low paying jobs, EXPENSIVE living conditions. Still cant find a job? Create one! 4 years ago, my job didn't even exist! I designed my job to fit me and my personality and along the way, got my boss started on a larger money making company than he had been in when I first met him. Take one of the 'just to get by jobs' and work at creating the job you really want. If nothing else, start your own company in your spare time. If a mom of 4 can do it, surely anyone else can! BTW, having lived in St Paul, MN most of my life, I find that moving to smaller towns usually yields a lower cost of living and makes it more affordable to go to the bigger cities later on for the extras you need. Where I am at, the average rent is $250 for a one bedroom, $350 for a two bedroom thus making it a more affordable existance. And then I can go to Escanaba for major shopping once or twice a month to stock up on items that would be more expensive at the local mom and pop. Just a thought!

| Moving to MI! Posted: 10/2/2006 2:54:43 PM | | Well it looks like I may be staying here a bit longer. Nothing good enough popping up there, and I'm getting offers down here. Guess this is a sign?? | |
|
| Moving to MI! Posted: 10/2/2006 6:45:23 PM | | stay where you are at dont come to michigan it sucks here | |
|
| Moving to MI! Posted: 10/3/2006 10:34:18 AM | I agree michigan does suck with the unemployment rate the way it is but it has been expanding. We are getting a new Museum and a bunch of other stuff being rebuilt down here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Of course this makes the main streets horrible because of all the construction but if you know how to do construction it is ok. We also have what is called labor ready. The one on 28th street is pretty ok. They have helped my fiance get a pretty good job. Now that payrate went up to $6.95 minimum wage it is alot better. Also getting a job right now before the holidays is ideal. If you need to get help with a resume or job searching then Michigan works is on Ball and Leonard street. Also we have great programs for helping people get on there feet. So though it could be better Grand Rapids isn't horrible. Also if you like skating we do have a skating rink in the main part of downtown now. I love Michigan in the winter time. It's so exciting and jolly. I grew up in Rockford, Michigan but I couldn't imagine christmas without snow and hot chocolate to warm the soul. Michigan is an ok place to be in my book and I couldn't have had a better childhood.

| Moving to MI! Posted: 10/3/2006 11:57:43 AM | Well, I'm finally getting of the Orange Barrel state in Feb.. Thank God. Thought I have some fond memories of growing up in Detroit and surronding suburbs. I will not miss this sinking ship of a state.
Everything is slow right now.
I will miss the
1) long winters 2) constuction barrels 3) pot holes 4) high taxes 5) high unemployment rate 6) Traffic jams, detours
