St. Boniface and Winnipeg were 2 seperate cities. In front of Northgate Plaza on McPhillips there was an open field, and the city limit was at Leila Ave.Stores like Loblaws,Kresge, and Dominion. Before Unicity or Kildonan Place. I live off of Highway #6,one of the longest highways in the province, and yet it was only paved about 30 years ago.

You know you are getting way too old, when you go to blockbuster to get a movie, the very cute and very young lady flirts with you at the counter and writes her number down, and you give her shit like you were her father catching her with a boy in her room.......lol

When Winnipeg Stadium had no upper decks,or only one? and after the game if you were parked on the west side of St. James along the tracks you could watch the movie at the drive-in? Sans sound,of course.

I remember trying to record songs from the radio.
I'd have to put the cassette player against the radio and try to be very very quiet while the song played, then try to push the off button before the DJ started talking again.

One day, I walked up to the TV and pushed the power button to turn it on.

My daughter gave me the saucer eyes and asks "How did you do that?"

She had no clue that you could control the TV, never mind turn it on without the remote control.
.
Don't laugh mykidsdad, when I changed the batteries on the remote and didn't reprogram it my son came to find me to tell me the t.v. was broken. Started with the "in my days we didn't have remotes and had to get up off our duffs" song and dance, and showed him it wasn't broken.

edit-two shadows, wasn't it dominion shopping centre (grocery store) in St. B? Can't remember now.

things that we knew then that kids look at as now and go "huh"?

A few years ago I had a ladies night and my young niece (17 yrs old) showed up and happened to see my turn table sitting on top of my sterio and said, "Oh my god, are they making BIG cd's now?" She had no idea what a turn table was!

All us older ladies had a great laugh over that one!

I have saved for each of my kids a paper one dollar bill and a paper two dollar bill, showed my 17 year old (gawd am I getting old) daughter it a few months ago and she asked me exactly when I was born! Told her same time as the huge microwaves came out and cost $800 as well as the vcr's!

But still didn't here of the Ex referred to as manisphere. My parents never took me there.

I felt like having popcorn the other night but didn't want the microwaved stuff...so I pulled out a bag of kernels to make it the old fashioned way and my daughter wants to know how I'm gonna get popcorn without the bag...showed her how we used to put some oil in a pot on the stove...lol

I remember having only 2 TV channels which we watched on our B & W TV.

I remember trolley car tracks at Portage and Main. Too young to have seen the trolleys.

I remember busses that ran on electricity from overhead lines.

I remember being able to buy things without paying sales tax.

One of the things that stand out in my mind from yesteryear is the drive in at the A & W across from Polo Park. I always thought that would be a neat place to go but never had the opportunity. I have no idea how long that has been gone.

The last drive in A&W was the one on Main & Inkster....and that one closed around 89 or so, if my memory serves me somewhat....and Polo closed earlier in the 80's....not the same going there now. I remember as a teen cruising Portage on a Sunday night (only a little light to light racing may have occurred ) and ya had to be seen at the dub at Polo...not the ones further east on Portage.

Also...seeing I grew up in Transcona and EK and rarely ventured to "the other side of town", you west side folks should remember this...there was a 50's style joint on Portage probably around the old Cdn Tire area (same side of Portage)...wasn't it called The Big A or something like that?

i have no idea where you are talking about bison. i've lived in far west st james since 1979. "the big a" as you refer it to does not come to recollection. around the old cdn tire there was a pondorosa (where cafe 100 had their studio til recently). there use to be a roller skating rink beside it. i use to go to every week with my cousin and aunt. thats now a legion. there was also a bonanza place close to it just a little further up. is that what you are thinking of? ya stumped me.

AHHH the drive in A & W's where my dad would take us when he was home for a while and he used to steal the glass rootbeer mugs! I finally broke the last one about 7 years ago
We used to go to the one on Henderson, and I remember when we had the bonanza there on the corner of henderson and springfield, that was before all those houses were built on the south side of springfield, just an old railroad hill then.
Remember banana seat bikes? Ahhh I had a beaut! Strawberry shortcake it was, had a big old picture of her on the side of the back tire! Going down to the side of the river and trying to BMX on that sucker! surprised I didnt break my neck! LOL
BETA! rofl, that didnt last long, remember the VCR's with the top loading deck? rofl and yes, I remeber our 1st microwave, think it was 1981 we got it and my dad tried showing us that we could hard boil an egg in it, and it kept exploding! (he didnt read the part where it said to break the yolk with a needle 1st). Dishwasher? what was that? oh yeah, ME! rofl Atari! yeah that was some computer graphics there!
Rollerskating to Dolly and Kenny Islands in the stream! oH those were the days!
Miss that old 8 track!
