A & W when they'd bring the food right to your car and you'd roll up your window part way so they could set the tray of food there ......... lol

The drive-in when you hung that 78 pound solid steel 6 foot x 6 foot speaker on the driver's window which deafened the driver all nite so everyone else in the car could hear....lol

Come to think of it - I haven't been to a drive-in SINCE those days ......... sheesh ....... do they still have them - drive-ins????????? Anyone wanna go???????

Odeon drive in is still there, and spring is on the way.
No clunky speakers anymore, just set you car radio and hear everything that way.

And for those of you with motorcycles, there is a patio in front of the snack bar with outdoor speakers so you can enjoy the outdoors and still see and hear the movie.

remember the UHF dial on your T.V. set, what the hell was that for anyway.

I remember that. Sometimes we could hear the police scanners or conversations. It was so hard to hear over the static though. I had one of those old TV's until I was about 24. Damn thing was so heavy. ugh!

I read through the thread and a few things stuck out...

Drive in A&W...the one in St B.
There was a great family corner store a block from my house. I remember riding there on my banana seat bike (lol) and getting my Snow White Cream Soda. Damn that stuff was good! 25 cents. *sigh*
I also remember going to Eatons downtown as a kid with my mom to get my ears pierced for my 5th or 6th birthday. I remember walking by the lunch counter they had on the second floor and wanting to go there, but mom vetoed that. I can't remember where she took me, but I recall having a great piece of cherry pie as my treat.

Does anyone remember walking over the old Norwood Bridge and the sidewalk was wood boards? I was so scared to go over that thing. Nothing like seeing the river through the cracks.
How about the Festival parade that when through St Boniface? They had everything! There were even guys dressed up in full voyageur gear and they would fire off their musket guns. Or how about the rides they used to have there? It was like a carnival, only in the winter.

because I remember when the statue of Timothy Eaton was the well known "safe" spot if you got lost...hahaha... "ok, if you get lost, I'll meet you at the statue...GOT IT!"
How many times I heard that from my mom, sisters, cousins while shopping ....hehe

Champs..awwww haven't heard that one in a while...my mom, until the day she died, called KFC ....Champs...hehe

My aunt worked in the old Metropolitan Store downtown, not sure when it closed exactly.

JFK's assassination was on my sister's birthday, so every year of course there was always a discussion about JFK.

Those super flared leg jeans with the white triangular insert with the red canada flag imprinted on the bottom of the triangle. COOL! I had those!

H.A.S.H jeans...? I had a pair of H.A.S.H. jeans and matching jacket , there were about 8 different colours of "cord" material used in that outfit...they were the hottest thing at the time....I got kicked off the bus ...on a trip to a basket ball game in another town because I wasn't wearing a "fortrel" type of pant suit OR dress...I was wearing my H.A.S.H. outfit......LMAO can you believe that !

Oh popsicles were in paper wrappers with an open end so you tell what flavour you were buying.

That really bugged me when they closed up the wrappers of the popsicles....still does I am inching to tear open the bottom just so I can MAKE SURE it's the right flavour..before I buy it....hehe...also gotta check to see how "iced up" it is right???

Drive in movies - oh man I love a drive-in theatre!! My home town didn't have one but the next town over did.. Is there still a drive in here in winnipeg? What is the deal with them these days...do you still pay by the car...hahahaha

A good friend of mine told me....you know you are getting old when you start drinking hot water in the morning instead of tea or coffee...hehe...and she is right...I work with the elderly and they drink A LOT of straight up hot water...hehehe...ewwwww ...

Eaton's downtown, the basement had the discount center and the red velvet cake (you can get it at Sals still, but I am sure it isn't as red).

Woolco, and the statue of the boy with the hat (isn't he outside the Canadian Tire on Regent now?).

The Garrick theater....wasn't a Superman movie my grandma didn't take me to see there.

Such a wonderful series of memorable things from days gone bye.
Luckily, I'm old enough to remember pretty much all of them

Just a litte different twist, of things I remember, that I wish were still a part of today.

Remember when you could go for a walk at night, and feel safe?
Remember when we were scared to do anything really bad because we knew the holy shit trouble we'd get in?
Remember having even the slightest respect for grown-ups, and authority figures?
When the only places that had alarms, were banks and jewlery stores, and we used to leave are cars unlocked all the time, not to mention our houses?

When everyone on the street knew each other, and got a long, and looked out for each other. When was the last time you went to a block party?
When people had basic common courtesy, and were generally nice to one another.

Remember when, a bar/street fight, it was over when the other guy was down, you won, you didn't keep kicking the shit out of him?

When we were kids, we could go out and play all day, and no one worried about you being molested, or abducted?

Remember when divorce lawyers were a rarity, and the phrase "till death do us part" meant something?

Here's a good one, remember meeting someone, with out the help of a computer?

I worked there, when I was eighteen t0 twenty. Winnipeg Enterprises ran it in the arena. Conklin Shows, provided the rides. Wpg Enterprises did the flower show, Mr.Manitoba and Mrs. Manitoba, fashion shows, vendor displays, pet zoo etc. It is called the Red River Ex, now, and it is held at ASD. My favourite display was the chicken that played tic tac toe, he usually won. I am pretty sure that chicken I played is dead, but I am not.

I miss when the Ex was handled by Royal American Shows - there was the great midway stuff like the girl who turned into a gorilla and the giant rats.
Sadly, RAS has gone out of business some years back and nobody is allowed to show stuff like that anymore. Not all progress is good.

Those were real! I always had a feeling that RAS brought their own rats with them.

First it was Clarks, then Gambles, then Woolco now Zellers. The K mart was along the east side of the property, and is now a bunch of small shops with a dairy queen.

The point that I was try to make, but missed abit , was that I am old enough to be their father/grand father now days, lol.

And your getting old if you are worried about meeting the kids and passing thier review, and getting thier appoval, in stead of the old days when you had to meet the father, first before the date!
