as long as a drunk doesnt get behind awheel??
hmm well we all know drunks nvr drive
and what about the social economic costs of alcoholism? best do some research there
how many abused kids, wives, husbands are affected by drunkenness
how many suicides, murders are perpetrated by the drunks
how many drugs are created to fix livers, high blood pressure, blood clots, alcohol poisoning the list is endless
as i said b4 im not saying smoking is healthy, but even the playing field be it second hand or first hand or 3rd hand(if ya have 3 hands) it may not b the best habit to have , but cmon it isnt the end all of existance habit.steroids and performance enhancing drugs are bad for u as well theres tons of things bad but seems these days smokers are the group being ousted by society, and um being fit is greatr and ya look great as well and u are to b commended for it, personally the way i would like it ti go is to make smokers only coffee shops n luonges n bars etc ,that way in a politically correct minded society, we would all b equal again

or just close down the tobacco industry completely and instantly rid the world of smoking
simple

No its true, the cigarettes toughen up the lungs. I try to get at least 3 sets of 15 puffs every morning, my lung feels fantastic, and I am completely immune to coal dust and smog. Rock. Without smoking my lungs would get lazy. You have to challenge them.

hahaha omg I almost died laughing at that crock.
Yeah hardens your ateries for ya also. Keep up the "good" work.

I agree drinking is not good, nor is drugs.
I also think some of the non-smoking laws are going a bit far.
But to say smoking helps you in anyway is moronic.

Toughens the lungs? whats left of them you mean.Im a nurse and never read so much rubbish.Yes were all aware we can get cancer of some nature, but smoking definately increases the risk of lung, skin, mouth, throat, oesophageal, stomach to name but a few,and obviously it causes some brain malfunctions, hence the ridiculous comments from the smokers.IT Is extremely addictive, hence people smoke who have addictive personalities. It affects the unborn baby, how you breathe, sleep, exersice and as above mentioned. All i can say is do it your own home, not in the streets/public.And if anyone thinks its good for you,we have little green pills you can take to help with the delusions.

[as i said b4 im not saying smoking is healthy, but even the playing field be it second hand or first hand or 3rd hand]

Yea I heard that somewhere, smoking can cause you to grow a 3rd hand!

From reading your comments I'm taking a wild leap here and assuming you live in cold climes... -40? Unheard of here in Australia.

When in doubt quote Sir Humphrey Appleby from "Yes Prime Minister"

Goes something like this:

All those dedicated smokers filling the goverment coffers (pardon the pun) paying their cigarette tax and then dying before they can collect their old age pensions. We simply can't afford to ban smoking Prime Minister. The government needs those poor brave souls to keep puffing for Britain!

Not verbatim, nut the general gist of it is there.

My ex girlfriend was a respiratory therapist. She said 80 to 90 percent of her patients were smokers. They go through life not being able to breathe. How sucky/scary would THAT be?

Nurse hey? I was a taxi driver and I've lost count of the number of nurses I've taken to/from work who smoked. Most common reply for reason tended to be that being surrounded by ill and dying patients was a constant reminder to them how it doesn't seem to make much difference what we do in our lives, there are so many ways to get sick and die, they figure smoking is just one more way. Still doesn't make sense to me but then, I'm not a nurse.

seeing as you can choose to smoke or not smoke, why choose to kill yourself faster? no doubt we will all die, but to die because you can not breath? ouch that does not sound like much fun to me.

Yes. It doesn't matter. Those with addictions don't want to hear it.

Well i wouldnt have expect anything intelligent from a taxi driver.I dont represent nurses,i represent me,and apart from smoking causing health problems, what about everything else it causes. Some of you are saying "we are going to die anyway",are you looking in the face of your children/grandchildren while you puff away saying "its ok babe, cos your gonna die anyway" shame on you all. Some of you are talking about smoking not being harmful as drinking and driving,so what about all the idiots who smoke whilst driving,im sure its not safe driving coughing your guts up,lighting up and then throwing lighted butts all over the place, often landing in other peoples cars. Not to mention butts from cars causing bush fires. And the environment you mention, what do you think happens to all the used butts you throw out, apparently it takes ages for them to disintigrate if thrown into soil, then pollutes the earth. In water they kill the fish etc.If smoking is so good for you and enjoyable then do us all a big favour and eat the contents of your ashtrays,it goes down the same way, plus you would be killing two birds with one stone.sparing us of your left overs, and when you shit you would be wiping your asses at the same time.

Just a joke people. Do all non-smokers have terrible humour? Me, and everyone on the planet agrees, smoking is bad for you.

I have never smoked but you have to take in the polution factor in everyday air especially in the spring when pollen and molds are prevelant in the air..we are all in trouble..

I noticed when we all get coughs that goes around the work place..the smokers get it worse than the non smokers...and heal slower..

drug companies making billions in profits every yr on bogus cures,

The OP started this thread about smokers/non-smokers and now wants to turn it around to include alcoholics, drug addicts, etc. and then compare second hand smoke to automobile exhaust. Why not just stick to the topic at hand??

When you say the drug companies are making billions in profits every year on bogus cures, you're clearly showing your ignorance. First of all, I work for a pharmaceutical company which specializes in chemotherapy type drugs as well as other infusion/injectible drugs. A large portion of the profits are used to finance research for newer, better medicines.

Second of all, being a cancer patient for the 2nd time, I can tell you that the cures are not bogus. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with lymphoma in my left eye. Ten years earlier I would have lost my eye. Today, that cancer is cured and I am cancer free in my eye.

The cancer I am being treated for now, ovarian cancer, has a 95% success rate over a 10 year period. A few years ago, ovarian cancer was one of the most difficult to treat. So yes, progress is being made and the so-called cures are absolutely not BOGUS!

I know better than anyone that there are a number of things that can cause cancer, some are completely unavoidable as in my case. BUT, I would NEVER knowingly do something to my body that would almost guarantee that I would get cancer. It is no secret that smoking causes a plethora or cancers and more smokers than not are diagnosed with these cancers. Some very young people (my dearest friend died at age 49 from lung cancer) and then some are more fortunate to live to be older. Either way, it is a terrible, painful death.

I guess my point is, surely you can see the logic?? I certainly respect your right to smoke but to think that either cancer will never happen to you or that you will live to be 90 before it gets you, is being a bit narrowminded. And I would think you would want those who live around to you be healthy as well.

New research clearly shows that the risk for MANY cancers, diseases can be eliminated by our choice in diet, not smoking, and living a healthy lifestyle. Watching someone fight for their breath is not a fun thing to do....

i think people should just get off smokers backs, everyone does thins that other people dont like. in england smokers are treated like out-laws, every cuts peoples lives short, drinking and beer breath aint to nice, fast food and smells bad but who cares. people should not be so fussy. even eating burnt bbq food is really bad, driving a car with fumes and not walking intead, even being unkind, it makes your stress levels rise..... so every one should just be cool, unless they are smoking in your face then whats the deal

well i seems i got the nurses all mad at me now ( thatll teach em for sticking them needles in my butt last time i was in the hospital hehehe) as far as i wanna include other ailments as well , well scuse me but they are examples and if ya dont like an example well i cant help it,its an opinion and without examples opinions are pretty useless.drug companies cure something??? gimme a break all drug companies do is make huge profit off of tellin ppl to take there drugs n itll cure em of the disease after 30 yrs
but then ya get cured of the disease and die of the drug side effects
die of the disease or die of the cure the end is the same
and numerous times ive mentioned smoking isnt the best thing on earth to do to b honest i was jesting at a few comments but like typical non smokers when ya see a smoker ya hit the ceiling and proclaim with all ur self righteousness that we smokers are just badddddddddd i just threw some of ur own habits in ur faces nothing more, doesnt feel to good now does it

anything in this life is bad for u take chocolate if u have lbs of it everyday then it will cause side effects gaining weight etc but did u know eating chocolate accually prevents cancer? it does i think smokeing is the same too much is not too good but moderation is ok ....we get too uptight bout what goes into our bodies. Breathing alone is bad to do too much chemicals in the air (thats just my to cents) but i do think that smokers should get to smoke indoors the non-smokers should get to stand out in the cold that would fix the prob at least that way the building could filter the smoke and put clean air outside lol what u think??? LOL maybe all the non-smokers go get a island somewhere n all us smokers can stay on our own half

Smokers should smoke outside, simple as that.
No matter how many fans you have blowing that smoke around it still stinks and ruins my visit somewhere.

You're only more likely to get lung cancer if you spend time around a smoker. On top of which, I don't know of a study that says a smoker is LESS likely to get lung cancer - just that cigarettes themselves offer more filtration protection than, well, pure smoke.

Perfume is not causing cancer.
2nd hand smoke kills. You can chose to kill yourself, but you can not choose to kill me with your smoke.

that depends on the brand of perfume and it really ruins my breathing ability when im choking on the stench.LOL and really even the foods anyone eats causes cancer, with the amount of pesticides on it.n ur rite everyone gets to chose thats y haveing designated smoking rms would be better than pushing the smokers outside keeps not only the building clean min. the chemicals in the air the ppl outside breathin just another thought but then again health surveys always change what they say, tuna is good for u but tuna cuz cancer too , sun is good 4 u but now thats cancer causeing too stress causes cancer too
(like my older sis says this is the line ...dont cross the line LOL)something in this lifetime will kill u sooner or later just enjoy ur time but be reasonable smokers dont wanna freeze to death ...its just as silly as placeing seafood lovers outside to eat cause u might get cancer
lots of mights here LOL
