| Senate refuses to raise minimum wage. Posted: 8/31/2007 10:54:37 PM | Higher minimum wage not only limits hiring, it limits raises.
How does it limit hiring? They will still have to choose between the same kinds of people. Having a degree does not really matter in these jobs because it does not mean you can do them better. So what if it limits raises when they won't need a raise if they are making enough to live on.

| Senate refuses to raise minimum wage. Posted: 8/31/2007 11:19:40 PM | i read most of the comments here there is a simple solution. Get every poor person to he poll (no matter how they vote). politcal people respond to those who vote and why worry about those who feel their vote does notr count.
The ideal thing would be to support a system tht would make the people we elect accountable to the people who put them there...........Duh Ron they do that now because the people who are keeping their profits up and wages low VOTE.
Very simply don't talk about the poor or little guy needs to vote..........put your actions where you words are and show these people that we can change things.
This country is due for a revolution...........not with the power of weapons but the power of the pen (computer) writing letters then accually getting people to the poll to show solidarity.
WE THE PEOPLE are the omly people who can change the way Washington is operating

Raising the minimum wage to $7.50 would positively affect the lives of more than 8 million workers, including an estimated 760,000 single mothers and 1.8 million parents with children under 18. But even this 46 percent increase would get them only to the poverty line.
As usual, leftist thinking prevails on this site.
If you were to raise the minimum wage by just over 47%, that would trickle down to the people the increase was intended to help. Do you seriously think business is going to absorbe a 47% increase in labour costs? That's right, product costs will rise and businesses will simply lay off employees. Would you rather have a job at $5.15 and hour or be unemployed?
And don't get me started on single mothers. You need to be 16 to get a driver's license, anywhere from 18-21 to drink, yet you can have a child at any age your heart desires. Haing a child is not a right, it is a privledge and like any privledge in life, if you can't afford it, don't bloody well do it. I get so sick and tired of seeing welfare mothers and single mothers moaning about how hard life is. Guess what? If you can't afford to have a child, then don't bloody well have one. Why the hell should I pay 48% of my hard earned wages to help support single mothers (amongst other programs that are equally ludacris).
Sadly Canada has been lost to the leftists. Canada will be a 3rd world country within the next 15 years as a result. I work with multi-millionaires and milti-billion dollar corporations on a daily basis and I see the hoards of money being pulled out of Canada by the wealthy individuals and corporations alike. Soon there will be nobody left to pay for all these Lefties and their idiotic policies. Then what? That's right, 3rd world status.
Leftists are trying to gain a foothold in the United States, but happliy there is still some semblance of intelligence south of the 49th and they aren't being duped by the Lefties. Perhaps they have seen what is underway in Canada and are smart enough to try to avoid the kind of scenario that the Lefties have created now in Canada.
Simply stated, there is no reason for anyone to be poor in the US. Canada still has avenues for advancement for the moment, but that time is severly limited due to the socialist agenda that has been in place for the last 20yrs and gaining more and more steam annually. But frankly, if you're poor in the US or Canada, it is likely because you choose to be, either because you don't want to work hard and want everything handed to you, or perhaps you didn't take your schooling very seriously and are only educated enough to ask "Do you want fries with that?", or maybe you're one of those afforementioned single mothers who thought having a kid would be "cool" without having the brains to understand the costs involved and now you've trapped yourself into a life of poverty.
Anyhow, I can talk until I'm blue in the face but Lefties will always be Lefties and they will always think the world is so unfair because others have and they have not. Oddly though, it is amazing how lucky you get when you work hard. Some of you Lefties may want to try it some day. To be honest, if 1/2 of you Lefties put as much effort into improving yourselves or some other persuit other than moaning about the inequities in the world, you would all be much futher ahead in life that where you find yourselves now.

| Senate refuses to raise minimum wage. Posted: 9/1/2007 5:22:50 PM | You got that right, legalboxers!! Actually, voting Republican is against everybody's best interest. They are equal opportunity scr*wers!! They will skewer the best interests of both rich and poor alike. Their desire for low taxes and minimal government services has many negative consequences. To name a few: declining quality of school systems, crumbling bridges and infrastructure, loss of social programs that allow poor people to get education and training to better themselves, refusal to back universal health care, which is paradoxically one of the most anti-business things anyone can do. It would be much easier for a person to start a business if the hassles of setting up healthcare for himself and his employees was eliminated. A wealthy friend who is a homemaker is stuck with massive health insurance bills. She'd gladly pay a few extra cents on "sin taxes" to not have that hassle. When the Republicans are in control, everyone bend over!! You are gonna get it one way or the other!!! | |

You make the mistake of thinking that the only thing that affects cost is wages. That is simply not true. Wages are just one part that affect wages.

That's right, product costs will rise and businesses will simply lay off employees.
Well, I don't see too many CEO's spending one second of time arguing how their incredibly fat paychecks are raising business costs in any way.
Also in 2006, departing CEOs Henry McKinnell of Pfizer and Robert Nardelli of Home Depot both received exit packages of more than $200 million. Both companies underperformed during their tenures, although their excessive pay was an issue in itself.
http://www.aflcio.org/corporatewatch/paywatch/pay/index.cfm#_ftn3
Both were hired to improve the company, and both failed at that task. Regardless of that fact, they both received in excess of 200 Million US dollars.
In fiscal 2005, The Home Depot had sales of $81.5 billion and earnings of $5.8 billion. The Company employs approximately 355,000 associates and has been recognized by FORTUNE magazine as the No. 1 Most Admired Specialty Retailer and the No. 13 Most Admired Corporation in America for 2006.
ttp://www.aarp.org/money/careers/findingajob/featuredemployers/home_depot.html
Every single Home Depot employee, all 355, 000 of them worldwide, could have received $ 571 dollars - with the money paid to this man who WASN'T doing his job properly.
Pfizer's 106,000 employees would have faired even better in the deal. They could have each received $ 1, 886 dollars, had that same money been divided among them.
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/global500/2006/snapshots/1042.html
Of course, in either case had they asked for such compensation, they would have been told that the company would have to pass on such costs to it's customers, that it would render them uncompetitive in the market place, yada....yada....yada.....
No one mentioned a word when a FAILING CEO was paid it, however.
Who did more for Pfizer ? The people that showed up and did their job properly, or the one that didn't ?

| Senate refuses to raise minimum wage. Posted: 9/1/2007 10:20:53 PM | Actually, the mistake in thinking is the employer's. We are well aware there are many other costs of doing businesss, but in the end, a great many employers consider wages to be an expense they'd rather do without. Wages don't add to the value of a product, they just add to the cost, and it's a cost which is relatively easy to cut compared to materials. I've seen more than my share of employers and managers who apparently just didn't see the bigger picture, and I'm frequently fixing their screwups. My favorite is when they decide they can do an export shipment faster and cheaper than me. They cut corners, their shipment gets stalled in customs, and it comes back to me to fix - at more time and expense than if I had done it in the first place and they hadn't tried to cut corners.
The fact is; whatever factors may have influence, a great many employers would rather hire a few more people at a lower wage and give raises more often. At higher wages, one employee becomes a bigger expense and hiring is more cautious. With the bottom line being set higher, they are ALSO reluctant to grant raises [which are also proportionately higher when wages are higher]. This isn't theorizing as to what is best - it is practicality in light of actual practice.

GDP growth not reaching paychecks The economic recovery that began in 2001 has lifted productivity growth and employment of late, but has had little impact on many workers' wages. September 3 2007: 12:09 PM EDT
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The economic expansion that began six years ago has failed to benefit most workers, according to a report from the nonpartisan Economic Policy Institute, released Monday.
Productivity growth, although slower of late, has been strong since 2000. After a sluggish start in the period, employment has picked up, although at a slower pace than in past recoveries. Yet, that growth hasn't transferred to workers' paychecks, particularly for workers at the lower and middle end of the pay scale, the report found.
After rising quickly in the second half of the 1990s, most workers real wages have been stagnant in the 2000s, especially since 2003.
U.S. workers: world's most productive While productivity jumped almost 20 percent since 2000, the real median hourly wage of all workers rose just 3 percent in the same period. Since 2003, productivity has risen 5 percent, while the median hourly wage fell 1.1 percent.
Women saw a bigger rise in wages between 2000 and 2007, up 4.7 percent. Real median wages for men during the same period were up just 1.1 percent.
Both high school and college workers saw hourly wage gains of about 2.5 percent since 2000.
Yet, in the period between 2003 and 2007, wage gains for median workers, male and female, as well as high school and college workers have all been flat or falling.
Not so for workers at the highest end of the wage scale. At the 95th percentile, real wages have risen 9.4 percent since 2000 and 5.1 percent since 2003.
A separate measure, the Employment Cost Index (ECI) showed faster growth of 5 percent since 2000. That's because unlike the measure of median wages, the ECI includes a broad range of workers and therefore gets a boost from high earners. Also, the ECI includes employer-provided benefits, which have risen faster than wages since 2000. However, even with these added advantages, the ECI has been roughly flat since 2003.
CEO pay: 364 times more than workers One of the reasons for the discrepancy between growth and productivity and real wages is that workers' bargaining power has diminished during the period, the report showed.
Although the unemployment rate has been low in historical terms, it doesn't fully reflect the problems in the labor market caused by weak job growth or workers withdrawing from the labor force altogether.
Looking forward, the combination of recent slower productivity growth and rising unemployment is likely to drag down wages in the near- to medium-term, the report found.

I could go on but I've made my point.
Designingwoman, I wouldn't be so quick to blame the republicans for our declining school systems. After all it's the democrats along with the ACLU who have driven parents out of our schools and brought in the PC police. No wonder private and home schooling have become more popular the last 15 years.

Made your point but not the way you meant to, just that you've swallowed spin for fact.
Republicans do cut medicare, while its true they added the perscription drug benefit they also tried to cut funding for Nursing services by 1.5 billion and to cut doctor fees by 4.4 percent in 2006. In 2008 they will cut funding for what is believed to be hospital preventable issues. They continually try to cut medicare this is fact not fiction.
Repulicans are starving school children and education in general an example was an attempt to cut 3 billion dollars from the education budget in 2006 including the $12.7 billion Title I program for low-income students, which would receive no new funding under the budget for fiscal year 2007. Changes in agriculture benefits effect food stamps, and the educational cuts effect school meals. Thats not even getting into if school meals are funded enough for actual nutritious food to start with.
Republicans do have secret meetings that involve the enviornment while its not how to destroy, and poison. It is about how to exploit resources irregaurdless of the dangers to the enviornment. Cheney's energy task force for example

| Senate refuses to raise minimum wage. Posted: 9/4/2007 9:22:37 AM | Was listening to the radio last night and heard an interesting article. Walmart seems to have control of 10% of the US market. That is HUGE! They have come to the point where the American consumer, who loves to save a few pennies, willingly flock to the stores, even though the goods are admittedly have less quality than competaters brands. The drawback is that Walmart now controls the suppliers too, by insisting they change their manufacturing facilities to Mexico or China, in order for Walmart to drop the price a bit more, or garner a higher profit. If the manufacturer does not play ball, Walmart is more than willing to find someone who will.
The jobs available pay lower, and Walmart caters to this by not only enforcing lowered labour costs but offering a way for the public to "survive" on that wage.
The American public laps it up like a dog to puke.
Minimum wage? Not when keeping shelter over your head costs more than 50% of what you make. Perhaps a 5% increase in rents, then frozen for 5 years, while a 6% increase in wages per year over the same time could help. Sure, business will scream its head off...but the bandaid could help for the short term, until something better comes along.

| Senate refuses to raise minimum wage. Posted: 9/4/2007 12:46:16 PM | There should be a cost of living increase Yeah, like for years now ...
There is no way a poor person can live without support on minimum wage. Minimum wage should be no less than $ 10.00 an hour and that is not enough due to the cost of gas, car and health insurance, rent and food.
Really? Let me break it down for ya, starving student style, K? 40hours @9.00 & 25-30 hours @8.00 and NO SUPPORT FROM OUTSIDE Ive got rent, bills, car, and kids to boot. Do I have health care? No, I cant afford the luxury but I do humbly provide for the 3 of us. There is a way, only with any luck, many will never learn the lessons that I have on how to survive as if in a third world country while neighbors enjoy their nice Foreign Cars and fat Swiss accounts
BTW the poverty rate in this country now is 10 bucks per hour. Poverty? That would be a raise for me..[quotep://www.plentyoffish.com/smiles/icon_212.gif border=0>
Who actually gets paid the actual minimum wage? Likely entry level postitions into jobs such as baggers at the groc. store, etc. True, that few earn that but as it climbs, so will my wages, as to offer incentive to manage those who do. It does work.
No wonder they're called the working poor. How bout' working TWO jobs and still poor!
Well, that's good,it does not help when they do that,it causes companies not to hire people that do make minimum wage, the only people that are mad about that are people that only desire to make minimum wage
the people that don't have any ambition should start getting some and quit wanting a hand-out. We are both fortunate that I am practicing using kind words this week.. I'll have ya know, Junior, that NOBODY says to themselves "I like earning $5 an hour. And bums who want "hand outs" pay little attention to any kind of wage, seeing that they dont work. Think before you write, slick.
Day care in the United States today... Most day care workers only make $5-9 an hour My second job is at a preschool and I recieve $8.00 an hour..
it makes no sense to expect a family of three to live on the current minimum wage. So why do people do it? If Child Services takes children away from abusive parents who don't take care of them properly, why don't they take them away from people who decide to get a McJob and then start a family? Are you saying that because I have low income that the government should take my kids from me? Are you serious, dude? Why do I do it? How about to provide for my kids the best to my current ability, doing whatever it takes, including working more than 70 hrs a week. Why? What kind of clueless question is that?? ~One should be careful not to judge others, never know when you will be in my place, bub. And although I do not work for Mc's, I think anyone who works there is just as capable of being a loving parent as any...possibly better than some who think that children deserve to be stripped from their home..
Well, consider the fact that the average minimum wage worker only has the responsibilty of ensuring the french fries are cooked, whereas the CEO has the responsibility of an entire company's future to bear, every day which includes the jobs and futures of thousands of people. I would say that the difference in wages is justified. Clearly, you have never worked in management. Any Joe knows that the higher you climb, the less you do. I work for a Hotel chain in Dallas during the day and The GM is never even on prop., my boss does nothing, I do a bit more than him, my girls in service are the real workers, pulling their weight more than any other. Next time you have a thought about how easy the poor man has it, save it or better yet, share it w/the responsible politicians.
Never had to work for minimum wage. I paid attention in school then applied myself By chance, did you miss your Ethics class? After reading only 4 pages of this crap, I feel nauseous and am ashamed of our self righteous attitude that screams "We deserve better than you, lesser people can work as our slaves!" May the tables be one day turned, may the rich walk in the workin' man's shoes and may the rich weap what they sow so arogantly..~a woman who works two jobs and is a student at U.N.T.

| Senate refuses to raise minimum wage. Posted: 9/5/2007 6:19:38 PM | Our educational system could be doing much better. It is failing not because of the ACLU or lack of school prayer. It is insufficient funds to properly equip and staff schools so that kids can learn. It comes as no surprise to me that the community in which one of my friends lives is a choice community for families because they are willing to pay the taxes to assure that the public schools there are properly funded. That community's public schools are among the best in the nation.
Instead of wasting money on a foolish war, we could have spent the money to provide universal health care and better schools. Both would allow employers to pay more to workers because the workers would have more skills via quality education and the healthcare burden isn't placed as heavily on employers as it is now.
We are drifting away from the topic of raising the minimum wage, but a point about the importance of quality education being available to all will enhance people's potential earning power.

higher minimum wages is not the answer. we must repeal nafta and keep jobs here by not rewarding companies who go to other countries. we must reward those who complete high school and college with decent salaries.
lastly we must have friends in the middle east (iraq) who will help keep the oil coming to reduce the cost of gasoline until we can find an alternative energy source. to do this we must continue to be a presence in iraq and thrughout the region. sacrifices must be made. we are in a war like no other and we must fight it to the finish.

Not to say that 43,000 to start is all that lucrative for a Masters requirement (within 5 years in NY)- while the buisiness major with a BS can easily earn 80,ooo quickly. The no child left behind act only made the schools worse. Struggling schools are just fudging marks for kids and pushing them through the system so they dont get closed down. Its the lets push jonny ahead so he can feel better mentality. The first school I student taught at, about 85 percent of the students made honor roll (about 50 percent high honor roll) which is a joke. It shows no standards in our schools.
|
| Senate refuses to raise minimum wage. Posted: 9/6/2007 5:43:12 PM | Yes, the No Child Left Behind Act did not solve the problems in our schools.
One of these days we'll have a senate who will repeal those foolish tax cuts to the top wage earners in our country, so that we can start balancing our budget and finally have the revenues we need to help with schools, etc. And raising the minimum wage would also enhance the tax base for yet more funding. The Republicans are very short-sighted. Their desire for low taxes for those who least need tax breaks, while also not raising the wages of workers at the bottom is fiscally irresponsible. Tax breaks should be reserved for the poor, middle class and those who are starting or expanding businesses who keep the jobs here in the USA.

Posted: 9/6/2007 9:30:31 PM | | Although Id advocate the elimination of the tax breaks on the upper echeleons- Your only going to get better teachers if you increase the incentive. Less people are inclined to teach because buisiness is more lucrative and is not as taxing as a profession. That and stop all this absurd emphasis on sports in the schools. only a few are going to make it to the pros. Schools have more help and money in programs than ever before. The problem is the mentality of pushing students ahead. Its sad to say that Ive witnessed schools administrations, teachers, and students with such morale. A work ethic needs to be reintroduced into the classroom.
