What do you think about dangerous breeds of dogs?

Uh oh, here goes the posts from pit bull lovers...I agree and sympathize fully with the OP. I don't see why anyone needs a frikken pit bull, but for one thing,to do harm to other dogs or to other people. There are too many other dogs that someone can have that are the same size, same color, but not dangerous around kids. Unfortunately,it is the owner's fault as to why these dogs are vicious. I pity the poor animal in a way because I am an animal lover. I would never put a dog above my family though, so don't let you pit bull in my yard or it is a dead one.

I am very sorry about your daughter being hurt. That said.....NO small child should be on the level of any dog. There are no "dangerous" breeds , only lack of reposibility with ownership. TRAINING, TRAINING, TRAINING!! This all starts when you choose to become a dog owner. RESPONSIBILITY! Dog ownership starts with socialization and never stops. Do you stop learning? No, neither do canines. I have 2 male Rottweilers, a Cane Corso, Belgian Malinois and Beauceron. The Rott and Corso are cerified pet therapy dogs.....all are show dogs, all have their ATTS test, AND I compete in ringsport with all dogs. That is a bitework sport. Do I trust any dog with a small child? NO, NO, NO! Children do not speak dog language, they do things that sometime provoke an attack. The dog, more than likely had little or no training. Was it a "part" of the family, wa? OR was it an object to be owned? BIG difference. BAN the deed and not the breed! #1 dog on the bite list...............THE LABRADOR!! Poor breeding is the result, and over breeding of poor stock. It only shows one's ignorance when the want to destroy a whole breed........come on you Hitler's!!!!!. Destroy a whole race because you think they are damaged??!!! Engage brain before engaging mouth. Destroy the Michael Vick's of the world, not the victims.

I have to agree with alot of the postings..

Number one, I was bitten badly by a german shepherd as a kid. Jumped out of hedge and took me down and mauled my legs. I recovered.. and I went on to have a belgian shepherd for about 8 years. He was a terrific dog UNTIL we had kids. Then he wasn't very happy .. He growled alot at the baby and finally bit a friend on the arm when she went to push him out of the way to go outside onto the deck. We gave him away to a CHILDLESS farm couple.

I loved that dog but it was obvious he wasn't great with kids.

Flash back to my first dog as a independent adult.. My boyfriend at the time wanted a doberman. *much the same reasoning as pitbulls, ferocious, mean, good guard dog*. He found some lady who lived in a condo with three little kids.. who couldn't keep her dog.
His name was Thor and he was the biggest suck in the world. He would back up and sit in your lap. Once we heard an intruder and the bf sent him to the door to "attack".. he ran to the landing.. looked at us, ran back down and hid behind me.. Hilarious.. loved kids.. in fact he would whine and cry to go to them when we walked him. BF took him when we broke up.

I have a schnauzer and a westie/schnauzer cross. They are good with small kids but I would never leave them unattended with a toddler. They simple are not used to small children..

Besides, I read an article that said the dog most likely to bite its owner!! A golden retriever.. how dumb is that.

It's all in the parenting as well. A responsible parent won't leave her child with anyone's dogs.

What I feel sorry for is the woman who was going to walk her dogs, they attacked a neighbor in the hallway of the apartment and wouldn't stop, even when the owner got on top of the victim. The owner ended up with horrifying scars and victim died. That stuff happens too. They were NOT pitbulls but rather another large breed.

sos, don't act so stupid, you know which breeds of what kinds of dogs can be aggressive the easiest...I am not going to debate with you about "pit bulls" being evil, but I ain't taken no chances if the dog has no tag,it walks in my yard it will be dead before it gets MY kids. You chain your pits and I will protect my kids. P.S. "One breed took away one good quarterback" ie:Michael Vick

you have GOT to be kidding:

you just called yourself an animal lover & you think that michael vick is the victim in his situation?

and FWIW, chaining dogs MAKES them vicious.

Never said anywhere Michael Vick was a victim, you missed the point...if pits were so precious and so innocent...then why would anyone use them to fight with?...They are a fighting breed and anyone that thinks otherwise has their head in the sand. I don't care how sweet and innocent someone might think their pit is,I don't want them near my animals or my kids.

I have had nothing but bad experiences with rottweillers.

They have attacked my dog 3 times in my neigbhourhood (while mine was on a leash ) and those things were running loose. I have a border collie cross husky. He is very friendly, likes all people/kids and is a great family type dog. He only fights when provoked or is needing to defend himself.

Some dogs like the rottweillers i have come across seek blood. I also blame the owners of these kinds of dogs. If they are abused/spanked they will be more agressive. Rottweillers are already a vicisious breed to begine with.

While, i realize some owners of rottweillers may have well mannered behaved dogs, i have not once come across these so called nice ones.

my daughtur was bit when she was 3 on the face by a hound. and shes 21 now and still has a bad scar.it was our land lords dog. she had it tied in our front yard and swore it was gentle.and said it was safe 4 my kids to play in the yard and to play with it.well my daughtur would go out thare and feed it our left overs every day and it never tryed to bite her.and thin one day she went out thare to feed it abd it jumped up and bit her.she had to go to the hopilal and get stiches.so the hopital called the police and the police called the aniamial control.whinch that took it in.the land lord blamed it on us and made us move didn,t cear if we had any where else to go or not.

okay, your "quote" suggests that you feel sorry that football lost a quarterback...it doesn't imply anything else.

pits make a "good" fighting dog b/c they are tenacious and fearless. there are many breeds that are that way.

as an owner of two breeds that are frequently victimized by "blame the breed" mentality, i wouldn't want my dogs around anyone who is absurdly paranoid either. i know that if anything happens, my dog will be blamed, no matter what the situation.

i've taken a lot of time & care to properly socialize my dogs. they are excellent on leash and we spend a LOT of time at the off-leash parks with lots of people and other dogs. neither one of them has ever shown an ounce of aggression.

would i EVER leave them with a young child unsupervised? no. that's just common sense. i wouldn't leave my shih tzu with a toddler either.

There aren't dangerous dog breeds, only dangerous dog owners.
